Tabelog ★3.67 [Darumaya Nishi-Shinjuku]
I visited the restaurant Darumaya in Nishi-Shinjuku. It is located in a dining area in West Shinjuku. The exterior is on the second floor of a mixed-use building, and the restaurant has a small and cozy feel to it. The interior consists of a single row of counter seats, with about 7 seats in total.
This is a well-known Genghis Khan (Mongolian barbecue) restaurant run by a Korean mother. Although the mother has retired, the younger generation has taken over and continues to serve delicious and fresh Genghis Khan dishes. The menu includes kimchi, a platter of three Korean dishes, raw lamb sashimi, seared lamb sashimi, 9 pieces of raw lamb meat, raw lamb chunks, garlic sprouts, asparagus, and eringi mushrooms, seared seasoned lamb, and hamburger rice with tea.
Unlike other Genghis Khan restaurants, Darumaya offers only four types of dishes: raw lamb meat, lamb chunks, seared seasoned lamb, and hamburger. The dishes are cooked on a charcoal grill, and the restaurant is always packed with customers. There is no gamey smell, and the meat can be enjoyed even when cooked medium rare. The Genghis Khan style involves cooking the meat on a dedicated iron plate along with bean sprouts, onions, and Genghis Khan sauce.
To further enhance the flavor, the restaurant provides a special sauce made with fried garlic, red pepper, and fresh garlic. The highlight of the meal is the Genghis Khan meat chunks, which are cooked and sliced at the table. The meal is finished off with a lamb hamburger with garlic butter flavor, served with rice and seared, turning it into a tea rice (ochazuke) dish. This is truly a satisfying and addictive dining experience. Isn't this a great restaurant?
