Gourmet City Koganei store (formerly known as Chujitsuya store managed by Daiei from 1976 to 1994) reopened as Ion Food Style by Daiei on November 23, 2017. Located along Kitao-dori, the route from JR Musashi-Koganei Station North Exit to Chuo University Junior and Senior High School, across from which is the Koganei branch of Fuchu's traditional Japanese confectionery shop, Aokiya, which has been there for about 20 years. When it was still under the Gourmet City banner, it was just a regular 24-hour supermarket with no eat-in corner or freshly baked bread corner (there is a 100-yen shop CanDo on the 2nd floor). With the renewal as Ion Food Style on November 23, 2017, the Daiei Koganei store now has a Cafe de D corner where you can enjoy D's Bakery's freshly baked bread, organic coffee, cafe au lait, tea, and more. It's a space for busy housewives (or house husbands?) to take a break and enjoy some "me time" while shopping. There is a drink machine for organic coffee, cafe au lait, tea, etc., and you can purchase paper cups at the dedicated register and extract the drinks yourself. This was my first time using it, so I was a bit unsure, but a staff member kindly came over to guide me. There are 4 table seats, but since most customers are like me, solo diners, the main seating is at the counter (15 seats), which also has outlets for charging. Each chair has a basket for your belongings underneath. From the window, you can see Aokiya Koganei store, and while sipping on my coffee, I thought, "Should I buy some Daifuku from Aokiya today?" The regular size hot coffee is priced at 100 yen, the same as McDonald's coffee. Until the summer of 2014, there was a McDonald's Kanai Kitamachi store very close by, but it closed due to certain incidents and was replaced by Freshness Burger Musashi-Koganei. So, I think this place will be handy for cheap and delicious coffee in the future. Just registered on December 13, 2017.
