On this day, I headed to the original Abura-do in Shinkoiwa, which opened on December 21, 2022. I visited on January 11, 2023 (Wednesday), when it was sunny and 7°C. After finishing work, I rushed to Tsukihie, which offers limited Niboshi Tsukemen, but I was discouraged by the long line and decided to reschedule (cries). I happened to see a new restaurant on my timeline, so I decided to give it a try, even though it seemed like a chain store.
The location is a 2-3 minute walk from Shinkoiwa Station, and when I arrived, there were empty seats inside the restaurant. I purchased a meal ticket at the entrance, where you can choose the amount of noodles from a regular 150g to a large 300g for free. Since it was nighttime, I had to be careful not to overeat, so I ordered the "Abura-soba" (large 225g).
The restaurant had about 15-16 seats at a counter in a horseshoe shape. I sat at a seat towards the back and handed over my meal ticket. The self-service options for water, black oolong tea, or rooibos tea were nice, and I chose black oolong tea. The background music playing was J-pop (Ado, Hige Dan, etc.).
There were a variety of condiments on the table, including fish powder, black pepper, seaweed, shichimi chili pepper, curry powder, Cajun, sesame (7 types). Additionally, there were chili oil, vinegar, kaeshi (sauce base), garlic, ginger, grated onions, making it a total of 13 types when combined with the previous ones (the financial power of the capital group is amazing!). The noodles seemed to be a blend of pasta flour and durum semolina flour. By the way, I noticed one person leaving as I entered, and at that time, there were no other customers, so it felt like a private dining experience. However, more customers started arriving one after another, and within 15 minutes, the restaurant was almost full. The good location and cost performance seem to be selling points.
Soon, my dish arrived. The "Abura-soba" (large 225g) had a relatively simple visual appearance. Before mixing it, I took a photo to show the toppings clearly. The sauce was not too much, so I mixed it well as instructed. The noodles were thick and almost straight, cooked to a soft texture. The sauce for the Abura-soba was as expected, with a rich soy sauce base and a flavorful oil sauce that mixed well with the noodles. Delicious!
The toppings included plenty of green onions, standard type menma with a nice crunchy texture, and shredded pork slices. The pork slices could have been more substantial for easier eating. I tried some flavor variations with garlic & black pepper, chili oil & vinegar, and seaweed & fish powder, which enhanced the taste significantly each time.
The meal was finished in no time, and I expressed my gratitude before leaving. It was really delicious! In this era where ramen shops like Ramen Jiro are averaging around 850 yen for 300g, this restaurant offering 300g for 750 yen is a great value for money. Another day of happiness! Thank you for the meal!
