I had the Katsudon for 700 yen at "Wako" in Shimomaru. It's a tonkatsu restaurant located on the outskirts of the shopping street on the south side of the Tokyu station, heading west. Today's recommendation was the Katsudon, so I decided to try it. The Katsudon had a deep orange yolk and a sweet, soupy flavor, reminiscent of traditional style. The pork cutlet was thick and tender, and the fact that it was offered at a discounted price was appreciated. It came with Wakame miso soup, pickles, and cold tofu. The miso soup was a bit overcooked, which made me wonder if it was necessary since it was still early in the day. Overall, it was a delicious lunch that filled me up before heading back on the Tama Line.

This is a tonkatsu restaurant located along a small shopping street near Shimo-Maruko Station on the Tokyu Tamagawa Line, a 2-3 minute walk away. I discovered this place by chance while taking a walk and was drawn to its nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. The interior, with counter and table seating as well as a raised tatami area, perfectly captures the retro vibe of the Showa era. Despite being quite old, the kitchen is well-maintained and clean. I ordered the pork cutlet set meal for 830 yen, and it exceeded my expectations in terms of quality. The careful preparation and attention to detail really stood out. The side dishes of tofu, spaghetti, and salad complemented the pork cutlet perfectly. I was very satisfied and plan to try the premium pork cutlet set meal and takeout katsudon next time. Even at 1800 yen, I feel it's worth it.

I visited this restaurant on a regular night, but the shop I was looking for was closed. I walked along the street and found this place that caught my eye. I entered the restaurant and the staff led me to a private room at the back. I looked at the menu and decided to order the One-bite Pork Cutlet Set Meal (930 yen). Before I knew it, the food arrived. The One-bite Pork Cutlet Set Meal came with cold tofu, pickles, and miso soup. The bite-sized pork cutlet was easy to eat and delicious. The cozy atmosphere was also nice. The miso soup was unexpectedly tasty. Thank you for the meal. It was delicious. August 9, 2019. Foodie. 2931 reviews (Tokyo: 1203 reviews)

After finishing my errands, I was 100% hungry! I was craving a katsudon, and luckily stumbled upon a tonkatsu restaurant. Oh, what luck! The exterior had a nostalgic Showa era feel, with a lot of character. The lunch special was katsudon! Oh, what luck! Without hesitation, I went in. There were four other customers, two of whom were in a good mood and praising the tonkatsu. Hmm, if it's that good, maybe I should have the tonkatsu... No, stick to the original plan! After a few minutes of waiting, it arrived. It looked delicious! I took a bite of the katsu. Delicious! Despite being only 700 yen, the meat was thick and flavorful. I couldn't stop eating, especially with my hunger. The miso soup was a bit strong in flavor, but it had a piece of tofu which was a nice surprise. Overall, I was very satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

Today's job site was at Uonoki. I felt like eating tonkatsu for lunch, so I came to Kazuki. I ordered the tonkatsu set meal for 830 yen. The frying was done well and the portion size was just right, but the meat was mediocre. Keep up the good work. Thank you for the meal.

2017.2.19 (Sun) Sunny 12:35 revisited. There are few shops open on Sundays, so today I visited this place with good memories of delicious food that I had before. There were 3 customers before us, and 1 more came later. We were guided to a table with a sunken hearth, and I ordered the shrimp fry set meal, while my companion ordered the top loin cutlet set meal. It arrived in about 12 minutes. The appearance seemed a bit lonely, but the shrimp was big. I dipped it in tartar sauce and took a bite, the outside was crispy and the inside was juicy. It was delicious, even though it seemed lonely. The meal had cabbage, salad, pickles, miso soup, and cold tofu, so it was satisfying. They offered free rice and cabbage refills, so I had another serving of rice. I couldn't eat anymore. It was delicious. My companion also seemed satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

I visited for the first time on October 2, 2016, a sunny day at 12:40. Following yesterday, I had lunch in Shimomaruko again. I decided to have tonkatsu. There were 3 customers before me, and 2 more came after me. I was seated in a tatami room. It was nice to have a sunken kotatsu-style table, very comfortable for my legs. I looked at the menu and ordered the top loin cutlet set. It arrived in about 10 minutes. It looked decent, came with miso soup, cabbage, spaghetti salad, pickles, and cold tofu. The top loin cutlet was quite thick and I enjoyed it with their homemade sauce. It was tender and delicious. They offered free refills for cabbage and rice, so I had some more rice. After finishing everything, I thought it was delicious. I was satisfied, satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

I had the pork cutlet rice bowl. It seems to be a popular menu item at the restaurant. The price is on the cheaper side, so it's easy to feel the value for money. ・The pork cutlet in the rice bowl was delicious. It was hot and juicy, with no toughness. The egg was cooked just right, giving a nice creamy texture. You can't get this texture in convenience store or supermarket pork cutlet bowls. I don't eat fried food often, so I'm not an expert, but I thought it was delicious. Considering the affordable price of 800 yen, it seems to maintain the reputation of a local specialty shop (sorry for being condescending). ・The miso soup had fried tofu in it. More fried food? Whether by chance or design, I'll try it next time. The flavor was a bit lacking in impact. ・In addition to miso soup, I also got cold tofu and pickles. It's nice to have both cold tofu and pickles. The cold tofu had condiments on top. While the pork cutlet bowl was on the cheaper side, the shrimp fry was 1,400 yen, and other higher-end fried foods were priced quite boldly. The sauce looked delicious in the pot, but according to other reviewers, it didn't meet expectations. I'm curious to find out the truth with my own taste buds. There were some regular customers there, and they seemed quite flexible. They might even allow you to request Worcestershire sauce instead of their homemade sauce. I didn't have high expectations based on the appearance, so I was pleasantly surprised and quite satisfied. On the other hand, if your expectations are too high, you might be disappointed. I think the best approach to Wako-san is to "eat a normal pork cutlet bowl normally." It will truly shine in everyday moments like shopping or on the way to the public bath. ◼︎Service ・There was no wet towel service, but there were tissue boxes on the tables. ・The tea was not very tasty. ・The shichimi pepper on the table was in a Zenkoji Temple can. Maybe they have a preference for condiments and sauce? ・The landlady was very friendly and communicative with the customers, and even chatted with me, a first-time customer. ・The regular-looking customers were receiving dishes not on the menu. Being flexible gives them an advantage over chain restaurants. ◼︎Interior I didn't have high expectations from the exterior, but the interior had a certain charm. You can see traces of the craftsmanship of the mid-Showa era. The wall with a small window cut out that connects the counter space and the tatami room is elegant. However, there are some signs of aging, but overall, it had a certain "flavor." According to other reviewers, it was said to be smoky, but I didn't smell any cigarette smoke at the time I went in, which was before 6 p.m. There were only two customers, me and a regular. After the meal, I could faintly smell the oil from the pork cutlet on my face and head. Come to think of it, today is Christmas Eve. There were only a few people working overtime at the office. Unlike me, eating pork alone, everyone else is probably having chicken or something. The regular customer also said he was going to have a Christmas party in Kamata at 6:30 p.m. and left. Even though no one was there, I could hear the TV from the tatami room. It's the Shimomaruko shopping street. ◼︎Other It seems that takeout is more than 20% cheaper. Fried food is tough on my weak stomach, making it hard to move after eating.

Tonkatsu Wakou in Shimomaruko: Tonkatsu set meal for 830 yen Located near Shimomaruko Station on the Tokyu Tamagawa Line, this is a quaint tonkatsu restaurant in a down-to-earth neighborhood. It is run by an elderly couple and exudes a nostalgic Showa-era charm. The tonkatsu set meal features pork loin cutlet that is slightly over 1cm thick. The batter is crispy and crunchy. It comes with macaroni salad, cold tofu, and pickles, with unlimited rice and cabbage refills. The sauce, served in a ceramic pot, is thick and rich. I visited just after the opening at 11 am, and the rice was freshly cooked, shiny, fragrant, and delicious. Although the origin of the ingredients is not specified, the menu mentions the use of "selected rice." Considering that the cheapest lunch option at the chain restaurant Wakou in the city center costs around the late 800 yen range, this place offers a similar price point with much more satisfaction. They also offer a "Pork Loin Cutlet Set Meal for 1100 yen," but based on other reviews, it seems to only differ in the size of the meat rather than the thickness.

I planned to visit a ramen shop, but it was closed today, so I decided to try "Wako" in Shimomaruko, which had decent reviews on Tabelog. I wanted to have pork cutlet, but they were sold out. I ended up ordering the pork cutlet rice bowl. Interestingly, another customer who came later ordered the pork cutlet lunch set. The pork cutlet rice bowl was served in a different container than expected, with salad and pickles. It came with tofu and miso soup for 950 yen. The meat was pork loin, not pork cutlet. The sauce was too sweet and the egg was overcooked. Honestly, I found it hard to evaluate the taste. I felt a bit disappointed as I believe pork cutlet rice bowl should have pork cutlet, not pork loin. I should have stopped when I found out they didn't have pork cutlet. As I was finishing my meal, a customer next to me started smoking, so I hurriedly left the restaurant. It was not a smooth day for me, but I appreciate the staff for guiding me to a cooler seat as I was sweating a lot. This hot Sunday lunch did not go as planned.

Tokyu Tamagawa Line "Shimomaruko" station. About 3 minutes towards Seiyu, there is a lighted electronic display board. On this day, voices of nearby customers who seem to have already come to drink could be heard from the slightly open store. Inside, there are table seats in the front and tatami seating in the back. There is also a counter, but it seems to be used as a storage area and not in regular use. There is a TV on the seating side, and the remote control is left on the table for easy access. I ordered the mixed fry set meal (780 yen) that was posted for food. I also ordered "salad" and "cold tofu" but... The salad came with a lot of cabbage because "it's Sunday today," and the cold tofu was included in the set meal, as the owner explained. The owner fries the food after taking the order. After a while, the meal is served on a plate. My first thought was, "Oh, is this a lot of cabbage?" But the taste was really good. The rice was a bit loose, but it was delicious. Also, the rice is "free once."

From the Keio Tamagawa Line Shimomaruko Station, head towards the Tama River side and turn right at the next corner to find "Wako" where you can enjoy a lunch set for 830 yen. On weekends around lunchtime, the back area of the restaurant turns into a lively izakaya-like atmosphere with local customers gathering. The elderly couple who run the place are bustling around, providing a comforting sense of being loved by the community. I ended up ordering the lunch set for 830 yen, which came with cabbage and macaroni salad, a small serving of cold tofu, miso soup with seaweed, pickles, and rice. The tonkatsu was not thick but had a dense and flavorful meat, with a light and crispy coating. Although the bottom part got a bit soggy from the cabbage water, the tonkatsu was well-prepared and satisfying. The attentive service and casual atmosphere left a good impression. I would like to try the hirekatsu next time, perhaps with a beer while waiting. Thank you for the meal.

My grandfather used to frequent this tonkatsu restaurant, which he also used for his company. It is a small, old-fashioned, homely place located in a small town. It is not related to the other tonkatsu restaurant "Wako" that others have mentioned. However, I personally prefer the taste of this place. The menu is diverse, so you can keep coming back without getting bored. This time, I ordered the lunch set with pork cutlet. It's a classic lunch choice. The cutlet may look small at first, but it is actually quite thick and satisfying. The breading is crispy, with very few fatty parts. It's easy to chew and the size is just right. The macaroni salad served alongside the cabbage is a nice touch. And you can have unlimited rice refills, so it's great for those with big appetites. Despite its small size, this place should not be underestimated.

I visited a tonkatsu restaurant that I had bookmarked after reading a review. I went on a weekday night around 7 pm and there was only one other customer. The restaurant was empty. The first thing I noticed when I entered was the smell of cigarettes in the air. It wasn't from the other customer, but seemed to be ingrained in the place. Additionally, there was a faint smell coming from the restroom. By the time the food arrived, I didn't notice the smells as much, but it was a major downside for me. The restaurant allows smoking throughout, so there's a chance you could be seated next to someone smoking, which influenced my rating. The atmosphere and service were decent, so I deducted points from both categories. The menu was extensive with various fried items like shrimp fry, fish fry, and oyster fry, making it a good choice for those who enjoy fried foods. I ordered the loin cutlet set meal without hesitation. The cutlet was about 2 cm thick (including the breading) and was decent for the price. It had alternating layers of lean meat and fat, similar to pork belly. The meat was cooked through, but I didn't taste much of the fat's flavor. While the cutlet wasn't bad, it didn't stand out compared to others I've had. The breading was crispy and light, balancing well with the meat. The sauce, served in a pot, was nothing special. The miso soup had seaweed in it, which was a nice touch. It was the first time I received cold tofu at a tonkatsu restaurant, which was a pleasant surprise. The homemade pickles were tasty, and the macaroni salad served alongside the cabbage was a nice addition to the set meal. Rice was refillable. However, the cabbage was the worst I've had. It was finely chopped, almost minced, with a rough texture and unpleasant taste. Overall, due to the smoking policy, I most likely won't return, and the taste was just okay.

Located near Shiomaru Station, a small tonkatsu restaurant that is not the famous "Wako" but a regular one in town. Upon entering, there are table seats near the entrance and spacious tatami seats in the back, which seem more comfortable. The restaurant is run by an elderly couple. The menu mainly consists of tonkatsu and other fried dishes, all at affordable prices. I tried the "Rosu Katsu Set" (1100 yen). The pork cutlet was about 1cm thick, wide, and tender. The breading was thin, crispy, and reminiscent of ham katsu. The pork had a good flavor and paired well with the breading. It wasn't exactly what I expected based on reviews, but it was satisfying and unique in its own way. Overall, it was a good experience and worth a visit.

There is a Tonkatsu restaurant called "Wako" in Shimomaru. Despite its name looking like a chain restaurant, the exterior is unique and caught the interest of a family who decided to visit on a Sunday afternoon. Inside, there are two tables, three tatami rooms in the back, and a counter with about four seats where regulars were having a small party at the tables. They ordered a one-bite cutlet set (850 yen), a skewer set (780 yen), katsudon, and beer. The beer came with a small snack (Kanto-style simmered dish), which was a nice touch. The one-bite cutlet had three crispy and juicy pieces of pork fillet, while the skewers included meat, cheese, sausage, and vegetables, all crispy and went well with the sauce. The sides included shredded cabbage, spaghetti, miso soup, a small dish, and pickles. The friendly lady and man running the place make it even more enjoyable. It's hard to believe the quality of the tonkatsu at this price. It's definitely much better than chain restaurants. And you can get free refills of rice and cabbage! Just make sure to note their regular holiday on Saturdays.
