Sunny autumn weekend. I went shopping in the newly transformed upscale streets of Tokyo Marunouchi and decided to have lunch in Otemachi at "Hantei Shin-Marubiru Store." The original store in the old town of "Nedu" was a charming three-story wooden building that was over 100 years old and a registered tangible cultural property. However, this location is on the 6th floor of the Shin-Marubiru building, with a wall of windows offering a picturesque view of Tokyo Station. Inside, there was a veteran fryer behind the counter. There's something comforting about having an elderly person in charge of frying. I ordered the "Lunch Kushiage 8 Variety Course" for 2970 yen, and enjoyed it with a side of cabbage and vegetable sticks dipped in black miso, accompanied by a refreshing beer. The appetizer was smoked conger eel, served with vegetables to prepare the stomach for the fried food. The "Kushiage 8 Variety" included items like pork loin, purple sweet potato, shrimp and shiso roll, deep-fried wheat gluten, yellowtail, squid with sea urchin sauce, enoki mushroom, beef fillet and cheese, served in that order. I particularly enjoyed the "Kamui Pork Loin," which was from the "Shigen Pork" in Hidaka, Hokkaido. The "Yellowtail" was also light and delicious, making me appreciate the potential of fried blue fish. The crunchy "enoki mushroom" was exceptionally tasty. I decided to order additional a la carte kushiage, including ginkgo nuts, scallops, duck meat with garlic. For the finishing touch, I had the "Iwata Nori Tea Rice Porridge," which was a perfect way to end the meal. Finally, I enjoyed a refreshing yuzu sherbet to cleanse the palate. The staff was efficient and attentive, despite the restaurant being full. While I appreciate the more casual kushiage restaurants that allow double dipping, it's nice to indulge in a high-quality kushiage course like this once in a while, especially when it captures the essence of the season.
