During the annual Iwo Jima cruise, I visited the restaurant on the first day of arrival at Hahajima for lunch. Many people were ordering the Ogasawara sushi with turtle, but I didn't want turtle as I had tried turtle satay in Bali before. Most customers were also getting takeaway for dinner after boarding, but since the takeaway only included island sushi, I opted to eat two servings there and ordered another round. Maybe it was because I was hungry, but the island fish was delicious. Today's island sushi included amberjack, and other toppings were flying squid, crimson sea bream, young yellowfin tuna x2, and longtail red snapper. All the toppings were light and not too fatty. The crimson sea bream and longtail red snapper, both deep-sea red-fleshed fish, had an elegant taste. Especially the flying squid was surprisingly delicious with its sticky texture. I remember from an NHK program about giant squid that there was a 2m flying squid featured, and it makes sense why giant squid and sperm whales feed on this squid if it's this tasty. The chef mentioned that flying squid can be frozen without any issues. This restaurant seems to only operate during lunchtime from the day the Ogasawara Maru arrives at Futami Port until it departs for Takeshiba Port. They have a simple menu with no soup bowls, likely to keep things moving smoothly. Despite being a tourist spot, the pricing is reasonable. Thanks to the island sushi, I discovered that there is a surprisingly wide variety of fish caught on the island, which has made me look forward to dinner when I return to Hahajima tomorrow.

Located within walking distance from the port where the Ogasawara Maru arrives and departs, this sushi restaurant is one of the few sushi specialty shops on the fish-scarce Ogasawara Islands. When I arrived around 10:00 AM, there were no customers inside the shop, and the staff was nowhere to be seen, with the TV left on. I remembered information I had heard from the islanders that the residents of Chichijima do not lock their doors when they go out, and even the newly arrived police officers eventually give up on reminding them. Since there is only one ferry a week to escape from the island, I had no choice but to wait inside the shop. After 2-3 minutes, the shop owners returned. I immediately ordered the following items: 1. Green sea turtle sashimi (1500 yen) - The appearance is similar to horse sashimi, with red meat. When I tried it, I didn't feel any unpleasant taste, and it had a slightly firm texture, making it very easy to eat. 2. Island sushi (1000 yen) - Nigiri sushi made with marinated Spanish mackerel slices, using mustard instead of wasabi. Since it is pre-seasoned, you can eat it as it is. Although the variety of toppings for island sushi is limited, I recommend trying it as a local specialty. This restaurant does not offer a wide range of seafood dishes, so the menu is limited, but customers gradually come in even outside meal times, indicating its popularity. The shop is open until evening, so you cannot visit during dinner time, but you can also order takeout, making it a good option to stop by and purchase before returning on the Ogasawara Maru.

Upon arriving at Ogasawara Maru in Hahajima, I had lunch during the off-peak hours, but the restaurant was about 80% full. I ordered the Ogasawara sushi with green sea turtle sushi and papaya kimchi. I wanted to try island sushi and turtle sushi after learning about them on the ship. The sushi arrived in less than 10 minutes after ordering. There were 3 pieces of island sushi with marinated fish, 1 piece of green sea turtle sushi, and 4 pieces of other local fish sushi (tuna, squid, ? sea bream), totaling 8 pieces. The marinated island sushi was lighter in flavor than it looked, probably because it was a traditional preserved food. The turtle sushi was very meaty, making it a bit difficult to chew. The tuna was from the South Pacific and had a refreshing taste. Different regions have different ingredients, so sushi restaurants are a great place to learn about new foods.

The island sushi from Ogasawara, marinated in soy sauce with mackerel, and served with a Western-style hot mustard instead of wasabi, is surprisingly delicious. The wasabi at this place is incredibly strong, making it a bit too intense for some, but I personally enjoy it!

On the 4th day of my trip to Ogasawara, I decided to take it easy and enjoy some beach time and explore the town without any tours scheduled. For a late lunch, I visited a restaurant that had caught my eye. It had a traditional sushi restaurant feel as I opened the sliding door and entered. It was past 2 o'clock, so there were no other customers. I hesitantly took a seat and ordered Ogasawara sushi and "shimakame." The sushi pieces were a bit small. I haven't had much experience with eating saura, but when I tried it with spicy seasoning instead of wasabi, it had a surprisingly light flavor. I had already tried turtle a couple of days ago, so it wasn't as surprising. Since the portions were small, we ended up ordering several side dishes, and before we knew it, we had spent over 10,000 yen for two people! The value for money may not have been the best, but I think it's worth visiting at least once during your stay.

The enjoyable time on the island passed by quickly. The view from the bath at the relaxing inn where I stayed, Tetsu House, reminded me of the view from my friend's house in Brunei long ago. In Brunei, there were monkeys, though... As I watched the pouring rain on the last morning, I saw a green sea turtle and decided to do some window shopping since there was still time before the boat departed. Now, let's grab a bite to eat before the ship leaves. There are various shops near the harbor. I couldn't decide what to eat, but ended up choosing island sushi. I remember having island sushi when I used to visit Hachijojima often. The inside of the restaurant was clean and neat. There was a small dish of soy sauce on the table. I looked at the menu and wanted to have a drink, but I'm looking forward to the ship departing, so I refrained. I was fixated on turtles, so I ordered the Turtle Island Sushi and Island Assorted Sushi. But that's not enough. So, I also ordered Papaya Kimchi and Spicy Saury Stir-fry. The Papaya Kimchi arrived. It was quite salty. I still wanted some alcohol. But water. This cost 500 yen. A bit expensive. The Spicy Saury Stir-fry had a taste where you couldn't tell where the chili peppers were. The island chili peppers in Ogasawara are very small. They're cute. There was a hint of garlic that made me want to drink alcohol. But I refrained and drank water. Saury isn't a very expensive fish, but this cost 1000 yen. Expensive. Then the sushi arrived. Sushi marinated in soy sauce. It had a strong mustard taste. I wanted an explanation of the fish. The fish was sliced thinly. Can't they cut it a bit thicker? When eating turtle, I remembered Kotaro, the turtle who was frantically looking for food in the morning. He was so cute. For this price, I would like some miso soup. Now, I will spend another 25.5 hours back to Tokyo. I hope the waves are calm and we can make a stop at Hachijojima, as we leave the island. When we set sail, the people of the island followed us in many boats and it was very moving when they said "thank you" and jumped into the sea with a splash. Next time, I will stay for a month. Dad, please take care of everything.

Arrived at Ogasawara-maru on the day of arrival and visited a sushi restaurant recommended in the guidebook. The restaurant is located near a supermarket in Omura district. What we had:
- Ogasawara Sushi: A selection of fish sushi, excluding turtle sushi. It included white fish and marinated tuna. The marinated tuna had a mustard-like flavor, which was quite good!
- Shimakame and mackerel sushi: We tried turtle sushi, which surprisingly had no unpleasant smell. It was flavorful and had a nice texture. The mackerel was also marinated, so it was delicious without being too watery. We wanted to try it at least once during our Ogasawara trip, and we were satisfied!

June 6, 2011. After arriving at Ogasawara Maru, we checked in at Cabbage Beach before joining an optional tour to go to Nanshima. For lunch, we went to a restaurant and ordered Island Sushi for myself and Turtle Sushi for my friend, deciding to split them in half. Island Sushi is made with fish caught in the waters near Ogasawara, although I wasn't sure of the exact types of fish. I was a bit worried if I could eat Turtle Sushi, but it turned out to be the least fishy among the turtle dishes I tried in Ogasawara (such as stewed or fried). It had a taste somewhere between Yukke (raw meat dish) and tuna. Of course, some might find it less satisfying compared to a fancy sushi restaurant in mainland Japan, but I personally enjoyed the nostalgic feel of it. Also, it's nice to try ingredients that are not easily available unless you go all the way to Ogasawara. It was a delightful meal - bon appétit!

I visited to try the famous island sushi in Ogasawara without doing much research beforehand. The sushi had a large portion of rice and generous toppings, and it was delicious. I was the only customer there, so I could enjoy my meal at a relaxed pace. It's located on the main street, so it's easy to drop in. I'd love to take this island sushi for a picnic someday. If you visit Ogasawara, be sure to try the island sushi. It's a casual option for lunch.

In front of the blue lantern, there is a very famous sushi restaurant that has been around for a long time. Today, I had the Ogasawara set and sea turtle sushi. The sea turtle sushi consisted of 8 pieces in total. It was quite delicious without any fishy taste. It's a good idea to try it out if you're visiting Chichijima for the first time. The Chichijima set is a set of island sushi and fish caught in Ogasawara, but unfortunately, there was no explanation at all. It was tasty, but it's a bit sad not knowing what you're eating. The restaurant was busy with only one customer, me. It's disappointing to see the chef come out of the kitchen, turn his back to the customer at the nearby table, and watch TV while preparing the sushi rice. The taste is good, but it's a shame.

Located just one street off the main street, this restaurant is a great stop for picking up some island sushi before departing the island. The sushi is made with only one type of Spanish mackerel marinated in soy sauce, giving it a light and refreshing taste despite its dark appearance. While it may be slightly pricey and not overwhelmingly delicious, it's a nice way to savor the island vibe a little longer on the ferry ride back. The restaurant itself has a casual atmosphere, so you can dine in comfortably even in fishing gear. Additionally, they offer sea turtle sashimi for those looking to try something unique. I haven't tried it here, but when I had it at a hotel, it was similar to tuna and quite mild in flavor. If you dine in, consider pairing the sea turtle sashimi with the island sushi for a unique experience.

Visited this restaurant during a family trip to Ogasawara Islands in the New Year. It is located right by the port on the main street, which is a great location. The entrance had a curtain hanging, so we couldn't see inside. It had a traditional sushi restaurant feel. However, once we entered, it felt like a regular diner. There were no customers. We ordered Ogasawara sushi. We could see the chef making the sushi in the back. When it arrived, it didn't seem very fresh. The price was decent, but overall, we didn't feel very satisfied. It was honestly a bit disappointing.

I found a rare review of Ogasawara (Chichijima)♪ When I traveled to Ogasawara two years ago, I found a strange sign while walking around the town (which was just around the port). The sign said, "New turtle in stock!" Originally, Ogasawara is a nesting place for green sea turtles and is highly valued by the islanders. But the sign was put up by a sushi restaurant... Does this mean... they eat them!? Curious, I eagerly waited for the night and headed straight there! And to my surprise, there were turtle sushi and turtle sashimi on the menu! (I remember it being quite expensive) I've eaten turtle before, but never green sea turtle, so I gathered my courage and tried it. It wasn't delicious, but I had a very valuable experience. I'm sorry, green sea turtle.
