On the 3rd day of our Hokkaido trip, we headed from Kamui Misaki in Shakotan Peninsula to Sapporo. We arrived in Sapporo early and took a break at the hotel. For dinner, we had the freedom to choose our own restaurant instead of the tour-provided meal, so we made a reservation at a popular restaurant called Kaiyotei Susukino 2nd Branch. The main branch, 3rd branch, and 4th branch are also located in Susukino, showing how popular the restaurant is. Despite making a reservation a few days before our trip, the main branch was fully booked, but we were able to reserve seats at the 2nd branch. We had some time before our reservation, so we bought souvenirs at Daimaru in front of Sapporo Station and then took the subway to Susukino Station. Despite the forecast of light rain, we were caught in a heavy downpour, but we managed to reach the restaurant with just a small folding umbrella (it was a rare occasion for my wife and me to share an umbrella). The restaurant was easy to find, just a few minutes from Susukino Station. The city center of Sapporo is easy to navigate. The restaurant had a modest exterior, but the interior was spacious. As soon as we entered, we saw tanks with live squid and live crabs on the first floor. The dining area was on the second floor, and we were seated at the counter near the kitchen. The menu was available on a tablet for ordering. The specialty of the restaurant is live squid, which is prepared right after ordering. We started with an appetizer (473 yen), a sashimi platter (1,860 yen for one person), their famous crab cream croquette (580 yen), and Sapporo Classic draft beer (680 yen each). The sashimi included rare fish like hon-masu, hokke, nishin, hirame, soy, and octopus. The crab cream croquette was exceptional, with chunks of crab meat and a rich crab flavor. We ordered another one because it was so delicious. We also had buttered potatoes (480 yen), snow crab meat (946 yen), and fresh oysters in the shell (560 yen). I had a glass of Otokoyama Junmai sake (770 yen), while my wife had a Calpis shochu highball (550 yen). The oysters could be enjoyed raw or grilled. Although I wanted to try the live squid, king crab, and hairy crab, the prices were quite high, so we decided to stop here. Kaiyotei Susukino 2nd Branch was a lively and popular restaurant that symbolizes the atmosphere of Susukino. It was my fourth visit to Sapporo after 17 years, and the city still had the same lively vibe. It was a great dining experience.
