On this day, I was wandering around the Yukigaya-Otsuka area, enjoying drinks in the snow. I mustered up the courage to enter a shop with a name that was difficult to read. "Teruchaan" is apparently how you pronounce "Te-ru-cha-an." I wonder if the owner goes by "Teru-chan"? It's located on the first floor of a building where Bamiyan is near the station, tucked away a bit, giving off a slightly intimidating vibe. However, with a large lantern displaying the hard-to-read name, it actually stands out in the dark. The interior has a long counter that extends to the back of the shop and a few tables. The friendly master and the efficient female staff run the place smoothly. The low counter adds a sense of calmness. I started with a beer. The appetizers for the day were marinated firefly squid and rolled omelette. The gentle flavors of the appetizers already showed the quality of this shop. Exciting! First up, the pickled scallion tempura. While Okinawan pickled scallions are often enjoyed as tempura, regular scallions are delicious when fried too. The larger part of the scallion becomes sweet and fluffy when cooked, making it really tasty. It's also nice to dip it in miso. I paired it with a fruity and refreshing sake, "Naruka Minamo Gohyakumangoku Junmai Nama Genshu" from Chiba Prefecture's Higashi-nada Brewery. It's very easy to drink with a refreshing gas sensation and acidity. The grilled marinated sea bream was just so delicious. The moist and fluffy marinated sea bream was cooked to perfection, concentrating its umami flavor and making it really tasty. It goes so well with sake. I then tried the "Kani Miso Yaki," a seafood and crab miso dish. It consists of chopped seafood topped with crab miso and grilled to a fragrant crisp. The rich flavor of the grilled crab miso is delightful. It's perfect for sipping sake slowly. I paired it with "Houou Mitake Karakuchi Junmai Bin Kan Hiire" from Tochigi Prefecture's Kobayashi Brewery. It's a limited edition sake from Houou Mitake, made with the specs of a Junmai Ginjo despite being a Junmai sake. It has a sweet rice flavor with a sharp finish, making it perfect for drinking with food. The "Wakasagi Nanbanzuke" with a hint of acidity also goes perfectly with the "Ichihaku Junmai Usunigori Namazake" from Shiga Prefecture's Nakazawa Brewery. The light and floral sweetness of the Usunigori sake pairs well with the dish. For the finale, I had the classic "Shirakabegura Junmai Ginjo" from Miyagi Prefecture's Miyasaka Meijo Brewery. With its freshness, umami, and sharpness, Shirakabegura is truly a top-notch sake. At first, I was puzzled by the name of this place, but upon entering, I found it to be a traditional and delicious izakaya with a great selection of sake.
