Located in the basement of Yaesu Central Building, just a 3-minute walk from Yaesu Exit of Tokyo Station, is Ooana-san, a newly opened izakaya in July 2022 with a spacious seating capacity of 160. The interior is clean and attractive.
They offer lunch service on weekdays from 11:30 to 14:00. I entered the restaurant at 11:35 on a weekday and found that only half of the seats were occupied, with many female customers also present.
Among the 7 lunch menu options, I chose the Gyuu Sukiyaki Teishoku for 1000 yen. It came with rice, miso soup, raw egg, and pickles. You can get free refills of rice, and for an additional charge, you can add extra rice, karaage (2 pieces), and a mini salad for 150 yen each. The total bill came to 1300 yen, and the food was served within 10 minutes.
The sukiyaki set included beef, mitsuba (Japanese wild parsley), grilled tofu, konjac, green onions, onions, and udon noodles. The miso soup contained tofu and wakame seaweed. The karaage was served on a bed of shredded cabbage, and the salad included radish, cabbage, tomato, bonito flakes, and another unidentified ingredient.
The pickles served as a palate cleanser were finely chopped Tokyo takuan (pickled daikon radish). I started with the fresh vegetable salad I added and then dipped the sukiyaki beef in the beaten egg for a delicious and tender experience. The karaage was large and satisfying to eat.
After finishing the hearty sukiyaki, I poured the remaining beaten egg over the rice for a tamago kake gohan (egg over rice) to end the meal. Without any additional orders, the 1000 yen sukiyaki set provided great value, and the other lunch options seemed equally satisfying for their prices.
After paying my bill at 12:10, I noticed a line of about 20 people forming near the entrance, both inside and outside the restaurant. Overall, it was a delightful dining experience, and I look forward to visiting Ooana-san again when I'm in Yaesu.
