Today, I visited a popular izakaya with long lines. I didn't make a reservation, so I was prepared to wait, but luckily, it was a weekday and there was no wait at 6:30 pm. I was able to snag a seat at the counter that happened to be vacant. After that, they started turning away customers who didn't have reservations. I ordered the following items, but the individual prices were not listed so I'm not sure about the total cost: - Kirin Classic Lager (bottle) - Otoshi (boiled greens and deep-fried tofu in broth) - I enjoyed this with ice-cold beer while waiting for the food. - Today's sashimi platter (fatty tuna, sea bream, striped jack) - The fatty tuna melted in my mouth, the sea bream was fresh and firm, and the striped jack had a nice layer of fat. Grating fresh wasabi at the table was a nice touch. - Shime saba (marinated mackerel) - A popular dish that was outstanding. The mackerel was half-cooked and served with a special ponzu sauce, ginger, and myoga. It was incredibly delicious with rich mackerel fat and a refreshing taste. - Kumiage yuba (skimmed tofu skin) - A great choice. The silky tofu skin with soybeans, fresh wasabi, and umeboshi paste drizzled with dashi soy sauce was perfect as a drinking snack with just the right amount to nibble on. - Man'nenji ao togarashi yaki (grilled green pepper) - The grilling was perfect, keeping the peppers juicy and flavorful. The generous amount of bonito flakes added a nice touch. - Daikon (simmered radish) - Even though I was quite full, I couldn't leave without trying the Kyoto-style oden with daikon. It absorbed the gentle umami from various ingredients. I wish I had more room in my stomach to try more dishes. After enjoying the meal, I was shocked to find out that the bill was just over 3,000 yen. I was amazed! Next time, I'll make sure to come with an even emptier stomach. It would have been even better if they had a wider selection of sake.

I visited a highly rated izakaya in Kyoto. When I arrived for my 5:00 reservation, there was already a line outside the restaurant. The izakaya had a traditional house atmosphere and offered a variety of delicious dishes, so I ordered a lot of different items. I tried the roasted duck, half a raw saury fish and the other half salt-grilled, grilled eel, and mountain-style sashimi. Although the prices were not listed on the menu, the overall cost was very reasonable. The staff were polite and efficient, making for a pleasant drinking experience. I highly recommend this place if you're visiting Kyoto.

I heard that if you make a reservation, you can't sit at the counter, so I visited around 9:00 pm on Saturday without a reservation. It was full and I waited for about 30 minutes, but the atmosphere inside the restaurant was great and I enjoyed that as well. The delicious food and the craftsmanship and kindness of the father that I could see right in front of me made the wait totally worth it. The mackerel, yuba, oden, and horse mackerel were all absolutely amazing! It was the best, the best, the best! ♡

The combination of mackerel and duck was excellent with a rare texture! The crispy fried chicken was also delicious! The Kyoto vibe was great and the cost performance was excellent. I want to come back again and would recommend this place to people from other prefectures. Around 4:30 before opening, there were already over 30 people waiting in line, so we spent time at another shop and went around 6:30 when we were able to get a seat. It seems like you can make reservations for groups in advance, which is recommended! The back of the restaurant had a nice atmosphere with a traditional townhouse feel.

Everything was really delicious and amazing!! We didn't make a reservation, but we were able to sit at the counter for two. I'm not sure of the price of each item on the menu, but it was around 6000 yen for the two of us, so it wasn't expensive. The oden was made right in front of us and was very tasty. Everything else was also great with the drinks.

During my trip to Kyoto, I visited this restaurant for dinner, which was actually my third choice. I had originally wanted to go to another place, but it was fully booked when I tried to make a reservation on the same day. Luckily, I managed to get a seat at the counter around 9 p.m. In front of me were delicious dishes of oden, and I tried a few of them. Personally, I found the rolled cabbage to be particularly delicious. I wanted to order the grilled eel, but unfortunately, it was sold out, so I opted for grilled mackerel instead, which was also very tasty with its flavorful oil coating.

If you want to enjoy delicious food and drinks in Kyoto, this restaurant is the best. The atmosphere is nice, and the cost performance is good. The recommended eggplant dish by the staff is especially delicious! You must order it when you visit this restaurant. The oden also has a gentle Kyoto-style flavor, and I was very satisfied.

In Kyoto, amidst the intense heat, enjoying delicious hot sake like this is a real treat. The eggplant, herring, grilled fish, duck breast, and sake-steamed clams all pair perfectly with the hot sake. It was a delight to have the second and third generations of the family running the place serving us. I was also intrigued by the electric car from MK that I wanted to try for my ride back. It's interesting how traditional izakayas and cutting-edge electric cars coexist in Kyoto.

During this visit back home, the restaurant I was most looking forward to was Akagakiya ❤️ Established in 1934, this long-standing popular izakaya is renowned as the best in Japan. The atmosphere of the counter seats, resembling a movie set, cannot be reserved in advance. I arrived 30 minutes before opening and just managed to snag a premium seat as there was already a line. The place was fully packed the moment it opened at 5 pm on a weekday. The menu, handwritten with years of experience, surprisingly does not include prices! However, everyone around me seemed unfazed and kept ordering. I followed suit and ordered a bottle of beer and some appetizers. Edamame, pickled mackerel, cold tofu, fried chicken, and boiled eggs from the oden - all incredibly delicious. Next up was the elusive sake, Meiyokan. To my surprise, just one glass got me tipsy and that was the end of it. The bill came out to only 3300 yen. It was truly a surprising deal with the efficient and handsome staff, cozy atmosphere, and top-notch sake. #KyotoGourmet #SanjoOhashi #KamogawaRiver #SoloDrinkinginKyoto #KyotoIzakaya #Akagakiya #FirstVisit #Top100Izakaya2022 #SuperPopularSpot #LongEstablishedStore #NeonSignboard #RedLanterns #RopeCurtain #Meiyokan #IncrediblyDelicious #GreatCostPerformance #DefinitelyGoingBack #CashOnly #WantToConnectWithFoodies #WantToConnectWithBarLovers #WantToConnectWithSakeLovers

I had eel at a different restaurant the day before, but it was so delicious that I had it again here on the second day. In fact, on the third day, I had eel at a fish market in Nishiki Market. Eel is delicious in the summer. The pickled mackerel at this restaurant was seasoned with myoga and onions, and it was delicious. The oden was also tasty.

The reputation was good and I had been curious for a while. I visited around 20:30 on a weekday and luckily there was a seat available at the counter. - Duck breast... The most delicious. As expected, it lived up to everyone's praise. The duck was delicious, and the sauce was so tasty that even the lettuce was a good snack. - Yuba (tofu skin)... The plum paste on top was quite sour and delicious. - Grilled eel... You can choose between wasabi soy sauce or ponzu. I chose wasabi soy sauce, but now I want to try ponzu too. The freshly grilled eel served hot was delicious. - Sashimi platter with 3 types... The sea bream was the most delicious. The others were fresh with no fishy taste. - Oden with 3 types (radish, octopus, imitation crab)... It was lighter in flavor than I expected, with a good bonito broth. Personally, I prefer a bit more sweetness, but for customers who are already drunk, this level of flavor might be gentle and just right. I had one cup of sake and it cost a little over 6000 yen. It's not particularly cheap, but considering the atmosphere of the restaurant, the comfort, and the lack of any dish disappointments, I think it's a good price. The service from the staff was not overly friendly or overly attentive, which was comfortable. Thank you for the meal!

I drank all the broth of the oden. The cold tofu is delicious, I wonder which tofu shop it is from. The pike conger is fresh, and I like the flavor of the nuta. The hot sake goes well with any dish. I appreciate how the restaurant has not tried to please the media for three generations. The counter seats are popular, but I recommend the tatami room as well.

I had been curious about this restaurant. It was a place with more flavor than the photos. The lively atmosphere inside the restaurant conveyed that it is beloved by regular customers. It's a good restaurant. I first ordered what caught my eye! Unfortunately, the duck roast was sold out, which was disappointing. I ordered the simmered sardines, oden, long green peppers, and local chicken grill. They were delicious. The seasoning was rich, perfect for sake. In particular, the simmered sardines showed a strong commitment to quality. Thank you for the meal!

A famous long-established izakaya in Kyoto. It opens at 5:00 PM, but I arrived on Saturday at 4:30 PM and was fifth in line. Popular counter seats cannot be reserved, so you need to go early. The interior of the restaurant has a Showa-era atmosphere, which is exciting. The duck roast that everyone was ordering was indeed delicious... I felt like I could eat as much tender duck roast as I wanted. Each dish was delicious, and it was a restaurant that made me want to go back again.

Visited the restaurant alone in 1930. There were two male customers waiting ahead of me. After about 25 minutes, I was seated at the counter. The handsome young master (resembling Takumi Saito) was not in charge of warming sake, but rather in front of the cutting board. I started with a draft beer (Kirin) and the appetizer was okra with soy sauce. After finishing the draft beer, I had warm sake, teppai, simmered mackerel, radish and octopus. The freshly ground mustard was as good as ever. Following the customer next to me, I ordered grilled eel with wasabi or ponzu sauce. I also added another warm sake, bringing the total to 5,500 yen. It was delicious. Where is the head chef?

There was a long line outside the restaurant even before it opened. The atmosphere inside was very nice and the food was delicious, but after they announced last order, they cleared the plates too quickly, making me feel rushed. It's understandable since it's a popular restaurant, but it bothered me while I was eating. Personally, I really liked the grilled squid with salt.

Five years since my last visit to Kyoto, and this must be my 10th time here. I don't know why, but this time I'm feeling the most excited. Maybe it's because I'm getting older? The first place I visited was "Akagakiya," a well-known traditional bar in Kyoto established in 1949. You can't make reservations for the counter, so it's a gamble to just show up. Luckily, when I arrived, there were still seats available at the counter. But soon after, there was a line forming, so I guess I was lucky. The atmosphere inside the bar was exactly what you'd expect from a longstanding establishment like this. The staff were all young, but you could sense their determination to uphold the traditions of this old bar. The young master in the center was also full of spirit. As for the food, the duck roast was amazing, like roast beef but with duck. The pickled mackerel was moist and tender, a true taste of Kyoto. The oden, with radish and octopus, was also excellent. As for the drinks, the barrel sake was sold out, so I settled for a substitute that was surprisingly good. It was overflowing in the small dish, making it a bit tricky to drink. Overall, I give this traditional bar a rating of 3.74 out of 5. Kyoto truly is a city of tradition, and the food and atmosphere at Akagakiya transcend time. I'm glad I came, and I will definitely be back again.

I miraculously managed to secure a reservation and visited the restaurant. I was seated at the counter after waiting for about 5 minutes, and it was extremely hot inside the restaurant due to the air conditioning not working well. Luckily, I was able to sit in front of the air conditioning. When I tried to order from the young waiter in front of me, I was told to keep the menu down, making me feel like the service was quite strict. As for the food, everything I tried was incredibly delicious! Especially the grilled squid. It was amazing! I've never had squid like this before, with such a bouncy and bursting texture. I don't know any other place where you can eat grilled squid like this. And the oden was served in the best condition. Ah, it was so delicious. That led me to order some hot sake. The waiter poured the hot sake for me, and it was at the perfect temperature, not too hot or too warm, just perfect! Surprisingly, the staff were very kind. The food was so good that I had seconds. I was worried it might be expensive since there was no menu, but it only came to around 7000 yen in total. It was a fantastic experience! No complaints, full marks! This might be the best izakaya in Japan! I will definitely visit again in winter next time!

I had always wanted to try this restaurant. There was a huge line even before it opened! It was a good thing I had made a reservation. We ordered a variety of dishes and drinks... The menu didn't have prices listed, but it came out to a little over 10,000 yen for two people. It felt like being at my grandparents' house (laughs). The food tasted like something my grandmother would make.

Dinner at "Akagakiya" in Kyoto, established in 1934 and listed in the top 100 izakayas in Japan in 2022. We ordered the Miso-Marinated Mackerel, Tuna Sashimi, Chicken Skin, and Oden Assortment. The restaurant is known for its red neon sign and popular counter seats, which are first-come, first-served. We arrived just before the 10:30 last order and the young male staff seemed a bit annoyed by our presence. Despite their unenthusiastic attitude, we managed to place our order. The Oden assortment was still available, featuring daikon radish, octopus, konjac, and thick fried tofu. The dishes were simple and homely, nothing particularly outstanding. We had three drinks each and the bill came to around ¥6000. The service was lacking compared to other Kyoto restaurants, where we were usually impressed by the hospitality. This experience left a different kind of impression due to the unfriendly service from the staff who served us.
