Schnitzel
On this weekend day, I went shopping for fresh food at Seijo Ishii in Oimachi, where they have a great selection. For lunch, I decided to try a restaurant on the 6th floor of the same station building. It is a Japanese restaurant operated by New Tokyo, known for their homemade pickled fish marinated in Saikyo miso, Kanazawa miso, and sake lees. Although there is a similar restaurant in Kyoto Station, the menu is completely different. When I visited around noon, the restaurant, with about 50 seats, was only about 20-30% full. I was seated at a table in the back after being guided by the staff. The interior lacked a Kyoto feel and instead had a casual atmosphere similar to a regular set meal or izakaya restaurant. On my way to the table, I noticed grilled pickled fish and Pacific saury lined up in the kitchen passageway, indicating that they finish cooking the pre-grilled items before serving. It was a bit disappointing to see this when the restaurant wasn't very busy. The lunch set menu included several types of pickled fish and miso-marinated meat combinations. I ordered the "Assorted Set Meal" with three types of pickled fish for 1600 yen. The three types of pickled fish on that day were salmon marinated in Kanazawa miso, blackthroat seaperch marinated in sake lees, and Okhotsk atka mackerel marinated in Saikyo miso. After waiting for about 7-8 minutes, the set meal arrived with the three pickled fish, salad, side dish, rice, pickles, and miso soup. The pickled fish were just right in terms of saltiness and sweetness, allowing the flavor of each fish to shine through. Among them, the salmon marinated in Kanazawa miso stood out the most. It was my first time trying pickled fish made with Kanazawa miso, and it had a great taste. The rice was also delicious, and overall, I was satisfied with the flavors. The only downside was the high price, but opting for the salmon marinated in Kanazawa miso as a standalone set meal for 980 yen might offer better value for money.
