ハラミ串
[Overall Review] Located about a 3-minute walk from Shimokitazawa Station, this legendary restaurant has been around for over 50 years in the ever-changing Shimokitazawa area. It is known for its pink fried rice and is a classic Chinese restaurant. Shimokitazawa is a neighborhood where new shops constantly replace old ones, but this place has remained the same over the years. It is famous for its pink fried rice made with pickled radish, and even Kōmoto Hiroto worked part-time here in his younger days, which is well-known among enthusiasts. It is a pilgrimage site for some, and the fact that this old-fashioned restaurant continues to thrive and remain popular is quite miraculous. It is a legend in the town, embracing both young people who may not know The Blue Hearts and older generations who shed tears to "Linda Linda."
Shimokitazawa is one of the top development areas in Tokyo, and the area around the station has undergone significant changes in recent years. I personally find it hard to keep up with the changes (^_^;) The underground construction of the station was a surprise, but the messy area along the tracks has been transformed into a stylish area. Despite the rapid changes in Shimokitazawa, the old culture has not disappeared, and the new and old coexist harmoniously. Shimokitazawa is also a fairly large terminal station, so I use it quite frequently for work commutes. The restaurant I visited this time is called Minotei, a local Chinese restaurant. It is one of the few legends in Shimokitazawa that has been around for over 50 years. The restaurant is a colorful Chinese-style house with a bright white curtain and food samples that give off a typical Chinese vibe. Inside, there are about 7 counter seats facing the kitchen and 4 tables. There seems to be a second-floor seating area as well, but I am not sure about that. Two of the kitchen staff seem to be a parent and child, and there is also a female server. There is no background music or TV. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I could smell butter, which turned out to be from an order of ramen. The menu includes various types of ramen, yakisoba, fried rice, Chinese rice bowls, Chinese porridge, etc., offering hearty meals. The side dishes mainly consist of dumplings and stir-fried dishes. Drinks include sake, beer, Shaoxing wine, non-alcoholic beer, and soft drinks. The most popular dishes at the restaurant are the fried rice and the combination of ramen and fried rice, as well as the dumplings. That was my focus for this visit as well. I wanted to have a hearty fried rice meal that day, so I decided to go with the combination of the five-flavored fried rice and dumplings. - Five-Flavored Fried Rice: 1,155 yen - I had heard rumors about it, but the pink color was shocking. It seems to come from the pickled radish used as an ingredient. The basic egg fried rice contains crab meat, chopped zha cai, and quail eggs inside, which you mix yourself. The rice is well-cooked and has more of a fried rice texture than a stir-fried rice one. It truly embodies the taste of a typical Chinese dish. - Gyoza: 605 yen - The gyoza has good oil drainage and a crispy skin. The filling is light in flavor with a hint of garlic chives. These gyoza are perfect for snacking (^_^) Although I didn't order alcohol this time, these gyoza seem like they would go well with beer. Many people were actually enjoying them with beer.
[Final Thoughts] I thought the customer base would mainly consist of middle-aged men like myself, but there were also many young people, creating a welcoming atmosphere for people of all ages and genders (^_^) This is a traditional Chinese restaurant. It's quite a miracle that it has survived in Shimokitazawa with the same style and remains popular to this day. The total bill for today was 1,760 yen. Thank you for the meal.
