This tea house has a history of over 150 years, and is known for being visited by many famous people such as members of the imperial family, poets, politicians, and more, all attracted by one of the three beauties of Chikuzen, Oishi. While Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is always bustling with tourists, the area beyond the main hall is a quiet and serene world, with trees, a flowing river, and several tea houses, with Oishi Tea House located at the farthest end. The atmosphere inside the shop is pleasant, and there are plenty of outdoor seats that add to the charm, making it a great spot on sunny days. The Matcha Set with one piece of Ume-gaeshi mochi (560 yen) is recommended, with options for coffee or Ume-fragrant tea as well. The Ume-gaeshi mochi is freshly baked, with a crispy exterior and a chewy interior filled with delicious red bean paste. Enjoying it on the red veranda surrounded by greenery makes it taste even better. The matcha was also delicious after a long time. They also offer meal options, with the udon being particularly tasty, so I look forward to trying a leisurely meal there next time. Highly recommended.

Oishi no Chaya. Whenever I go to Dazaifu, I always visit here. After visiting Tenmangu Shrine, passing by the tea house and plum trees, you go up the hill to reach the last tea house. It's usually easy to find a seat, and if the weather is nice, the outdoor seating on the red carpet is great. The freshly baked plum branch sticks have a crispy skin and a delicious aroma. This time, I was with my eldest son, so he ordered the "kasane" (double serving). I could only manage to eat one. But it's always nice when someone orders the "kasane" too (laughs). The weather was really nice, the breeze was pleasant, and all the other customers were eating outside.

It was my first time in Hakata. I visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The weather was great, so I climbed up to Tenkai Inari Shrine. It was really hot, and I got thirsty, so I took a short break and stopped by here. I enjoyed this dish in the garden. I had wanted to try the famous Ume-gaeshi mochi, but the main street was crowded, so I passed by and came here instead. It was not crowded, and I could enjoy it in the pleasant breeze in the garden.

The restaurant opened at 11 o'clock, which was a bit different from the information on Tabelog. However, I had been wanting to go there for a long time, so I waited in front of the restaurant until it opened. There were a few groups waiting, and since I had other places to go, I reluctantly decided to get takeout. But I couldn't resist and ended up eating one on the go right away. It was so delicious with its crispy and chewy texture! I felt a bit guilty for not eating it properly, but I couldn't help myself. Since I live in Fukuoka, it's not easy to go back again, but I promised myself that I would definitely visit again. I'm not a fan of sweet things, but the mochi flavor, the taste of the red bean paste, the mild sweetness, and the fragrant aroma made me feel very happy. Thank you for the meal!

At the back of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, there is a tea house. It was crowded at first, but as I went further in, it was surprisingly empty, probably because it was afternoon. The tea house was about to close, but I ordered and got freshly baked, chewy and delicious Umeboshi mochi and tea. It was worth waiting for! It takes about an hour by bus from Hakata, and the bus wait was over 30 minutes. Feeling tired among the crowd, I just wanted to get to the back quickly, so I left after the tea house. I hope to visit all the way to the end and offer my prayers next time.

I climbed the stairs of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and found a place where I wanted to take a break. I ordered warm udon and oden, and they were delicious. I also recommend the plum cider. Personally, I liked the chili with yuzu in it. They sell it in the store, so I bought it as a souvenir.

Before visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, we compared different types of Umegae mochi. While admiring the plum blossoms, we started to feel a bit hungry and craved something salty. So, we headed towards "Oishi Chaya" at the back of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It had a traditional tea house vibe. I wanted to try Hakata udon. The popular bento boxes were sold out. The interior had raised tatami seating areas covered in red felt, giving it a nice ambiance. We chose a table instead. We placed our order and paid at the register in the back of the shop, then informed them of our table number and waited. A waitress brought us tea first, which was delicious. I had the plum seaweed udon and my husband had soba noodles. Even though we should have tried the tempura, we wanted something light. The udon was different from Sanuki or Osaka style, but it was delicious. Of course, they also had Umegae mochi at the tea house. We shared one as we were already full. The mochi was chewy and had a classic style. The outdoor seating was also very popular. After that, we visited the "Oishi Tunnel" as mentioned in my previous review of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It is said that Oishi-san, the lady from Oishi Chaya, was a great beauty and one of the "Three Beauties of Chikuzen." There's a story that Asou Taykichi made a tunnel for her to commute easily from her home at Kamado Shrine to the tea house. Even if it's just a rumor, it's a fun story. If you visit Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, you can explore the area behind the main hall, take a break at Oishi Chaya, and then walk to Kamado Shrine, which is about 1.8km away and takes around 30 minutes.

Just before heading to Tenkai Inari Shrine, deeper from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, there is an old-fashioned shop where I was told by an acquaintance that this is the best place to try Ume-gaeshi mochi. First, I had the Ume no Ka Udon. It was packed with plenty of seaweed and homemade Ume paste, which was delicious! The clear broth was exactly as it looked, and it warmed me up on a cold day of visiting the shrine. The Yuzu Shichimi was also tasty! And then, the Ume-gaeshi mochi. It had a thick mochi with a crispy, fragrant outer layer! I should have bought the Yuzu Shichimi they were selling at the shop... It was a wonderful New Year's experience! Thank you for the delicious meal~!!

On the 3rd day of the New Year, two people visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. As they walked up the slope towards the main shrine, they passed by Tenkai Shrine. Along the way, they found "Oishi Chaya," a quaint tea house that looked like something out of a period drama. It was 8:40 when they arrived, and although the tea house was still preparing to open, they decided to stop by after visiting Tenkai Shrine. The two of them were seated at a table by the window and ordered their drinks at the counter. One of them ordered the Matcha Set (560 yen, tax included). While waiting for their order, they watched the visitors going up and down the slope through the glass window. Finally, the Matcha Set arrived, complete with the famous Ume-no-hana Mochi. They found the mochi to be soft and chewy, with a delicate texture and a hint of toasting. The sweet red bean paste complemented the mochi well, and the matcha was smooth and easy to drink. They also purchased a pack of 10 Ume-no-hana Mochi to take home before bidding farewell and expressing their gratitude.

I visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine for Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year). The weather was a bit cloudy, so I decided to visit before the peak tourist hours. After receiving a Goshuin (red seal stamp), I took a leisurely stroll and came across a few tea houses offering Umegae mochi. Feeling a bit hungry, I entered one of the tea houses as soon as it opened. I purchased tickets for Umegae mochi and Maruten Udon, then waited at a table inside. Green tea was served promptly, and after about 7-8 minutes, piping hot Umegae mochi was served, followed by the Maruten Udon. The Maruten Udon, which included burdock in the tempura, was delicious with a light broth. The Umegae mochi was also available as a souvenir, but it tasted even better when enjoyed hot near the shrine. After a leisurely walk and visit to the shrine, it was a nice place to relax and have a cup of tea at the cozy tea house.

There is a dining place in Dazaifu. It is located up a slight slope from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, through a back street. At lunchtime, there was a line for indoor seating, but no line outside. It seems like you need to pay in advance. Some dishes like tempura bowl were sold out. I had a chicken and egg bowl. The egg was slightly firm, and the chicken had a good texture. In the afternoon, many people were outside enjoying a set of Umeboshi Mochi and tea.

Visited Dazaifu and stumbled upon a charming tea house while walking along the road. Since I hadn't had lunch yet, I decided to stop by. The tea house had a nostalgic atmosphere, with a kettle and teacups brought to me. I enjoyed sipping tea and savoring the passage of time. Then, I ordered the "Ume no Ka Udon" which was served to me. The noodles were slightly soft, and the soup had a rich dashi flavor, making it refreshing to eat. The sourness of the plum added to my appetite. The ambiance was excellent in this quiet place. It was also nice that I could dine or take a break outside if the weather was good. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely visit again.

Visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Kamado Shrine, Shikibu Inari Shrine, and Tenkai Inari Shrine in that order. Arrived around 11 am and found quite a few tourists. I had walked quite a bit, so I tried the plum-scented udon and plum rice cakes. The atmosphere was very nice, and the nearby restroom was clean and well-maintained.

I think this is probably the cheapest place near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. I was surprised by the prices at this restaurant my local friend took me to, it was similar to Saizeriya. The interior was spacious and we had plenty of room for 6 people. This place is probably one of the few where you can eat udon for around 500 yen near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It was delicious! ✨

This shop is famous locally, located behind Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Among the many shops in the area, this one has been around for a long time. Most people order the set of Umegae mochi and tea, I think. There is also a set with Umegae mochi and coffee. For those with a small appetite, many people eat various types of udon. In this context, I tried the parent and child bowl for the first time. The delicious broth was expected, but the creamy egg unexpectedly made it delicious. 710 yen.

Located at the back of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, this tea house has the most history and atmosphere. I tried the plum-scented udon noodles. They are soft, typical of Fukuoka, and the soup with its Fukuoka-style broth is truly delicious. The combination of plum and yuzu is exquisite. Don't miss the plum branch mochi as well.

Sure! Here is the translated restaurant review content:
Let's eat freshly baked Umeboshi mochi. Although the plum garden at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine had some plum blossoms in full bloom, it seemed like the best viewing time was a little later. The red seats inside the shop brought a sense of nostalgia. It feels like just about a year ago... First, buy a food ticket. It's more like ordering at the register in the back of the shop and settling the bill, but there is a notice to purchase a food ticket. When you sit down, you are served warm tea, which is comforting as Dazaifu can be cold with a chilly wind. The preparation of sweet sake is also provided, with a hint of ginger. It enhances the slight sweetness. The Umeboshi mochi is served freshly baked. Enjoy it with sweet sake. The crispy sear, chewy stretch, and just right sweetness of the red bean paste. It takes a little time for the mochi to be baked. I think it's best to stay and relax.

On December 30, my mother, aunt, younger brother, and his daughter visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Afterwards, we took a break at the usual Ooishi Chaya and ordered from the regular menu. We ordered the following:
- Ume fragrant tea set
- Ume-ga-eshi mochi
I'm curious if there are any differences in the Ume-ga-eshi mochi in Dazaifu. If anyone knows, please let me know. I heard that the filling comes from the same supplier. So, I wonder if the difference lies in the way it's baked.
My mother and aunt ordered the matcha set, while my niece had kitsune udon, among other things.

This shop is not located on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, but rather at the back of the main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. When you enter the shop, you can have lunch, and it may make you wonder, "Do they sell umegae mochi here?" However, you can purchase it at the farthest cashier. Even if you buy just one umegae mochi, they will serve you tea. The bottom of the umegae mochi is well-baked, crispy, and crunchy when baked, and the mochi itself has a slightly thick and chewy texture, giving a strong mochi-eating experience. The filling is coarse sweet red bean paste, with the shape of the azuki beans clearly visible, which is great for those who like coarse sweet red bean paste. Personally, I highly recommend the umegae mochi from this shop. If you're unsure, definitely give it a try.

Review: When it comes to Fukuoka, people often think of tonkotsu ramen, but locals actually recommend trying udon. After visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu temple, we decided to stop by this tea house. It's a temporary establishment inside the temple grounds, with unpaved floors and a bit chilly in winter. However, the plum udon and plum tea set were fantastic. The udon had a delicious broth and the tea had a lovely homemade plum flavor. The mochi dessert was the perfect level of sweetness. The portion size is a bit small, but it's great for a quick stop before heading back to the station.

- Visit Date: December 17, 2021
- Item Received: Umebachi Mochi
- Memo: I visited this shop on December 17, 2021 after paying a visit to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and receiving a Goshuin stamp. I used the Dazaifu sightseeing pass to purchase Umebachi Mochi at this shop located behind Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The mochi was freshly baked and piping hot, making it a perfect treat on a cold day. The perfect balance of red bean paste and mochi skin made it incredibly delicious. When visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, don't forget to try the Umebachi Mochi. With my hunger satisfied, I am now heading back to Hakata for lunch.
