Located about a 30-minute drive south of Fukuoka City in Chikushino City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is the town famous for the natural hot spring "Futatsui Onsen," which has been flowing for over 1300 years. One of the oldest and most prestigious ryokans in Futatsui Onsen is "Daimaru Bessou." Established in the first year of Keio era (1865) under the name "Tashiroya," it later changed its name to "Daimaru Bessou" and has been preserving its tradition for over 150 years. It is said that Emperor Showa stayed here during his visit to Fukuoka. The ryokan is surrounded by a 3500-tsubo Japanese garden, with three accommodation buildings - "Taishotei" built in 1922, "Showatei" built in 1970, and "Heiantei" built in 1989, as well as a detached house called "Ren'uan" and a large communal bath called "Tsudano Yu." The hot spring is a natural spring with a rock bath-style large communal bath "Tsudano Yu" of about 100 tsubo, where you can enjoy a secluded hot spring experience. Each room also has an indoor bath, and family baths are also available. The soft and gentle spring water will relax your mind and body to the core.
I recently stayed at Daimaru Bessou with over 20 colleagues from my company. We stayed in the "Heiantei" with 6 people in one room. There are two Japanese-style rooms and another room with a modern Japanese design overlooking a backyard with trees and a table. The indoor bath is a cypress wood bath with a view of the backyard - truly luxurious. We had dinner at the banquet hall "Hibai," where a monthly kaiseki course meal is prepared by all the staff. We chose the "Kizan" course (¥8316), which included a variety of dishes. The authentic kaiseki meal was exquisite, and the sake paired perfectly with it. It was a lively banquet with close colleagues, and we all had a great time.
The next morning, we had a "shojin-style" breakfast in a separate room with table seating. The meal included dishes like "dashimaki tamago" and "yudofu," along with monthly small dishes, grilled fish, rice, miso soup, and pickles. The dessert of "yuzu kanten" was a refreshing end to the meal. After breakfast, I refreshed myself once again in the "Tsudano Yu" before leaving. Before heading home, we enjoyed complimentary hot coffee at "Lobby Matsukaze" while listening to automatic grand piano music. We reminisced about our time together and bid farewell with a salute. It was truly a wonderful stay. Thank you very much.
