At this shop with a splendid appearance located on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, there was a long line. After our stroll, we decided to try their Ume-gaeshi mochi. The mochi was chewy with a refined sweet red bean paste filling, reminiscent of sweet red bean soup. The taste was definitely worth the popularity of the shop.

First time visiting. It's been a long time since I last visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. I think I came once after my child's entrance exam. It seems like there are more stylish shops now. There are also many tourists from Asia. It seems like there are also many people doing pilgrimage to sacred sites. When you come here, you have to try the Ume-ga-ya mochi! Since this shop had a really nice atmosphere, we decided to give it a try. My partner and I each got one. It was surprisingly hot! We ate them in the long narrow resting area on the side of the shop. There are no chairs, so we ate standing up. The Ume-ga-ya mochi that I had not eaten in a long time was delicious! Thank you for the meal.

Takeout menu: Ume-gaeshi Mochi for 150 yen (tax included). Yasutake is a historic shop with roots dating back to the Kamakura period. The shop was renovated in 2021. I was able to buy without waiting in line around 10:00. Thank you for the delicious treat, Yasutake!

There is a famous shop near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine that sells Umegae mochi. There are many Umegae mochi shops near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, but the number of customers varied. The mochi here was served freshly baked. The outside was crispy, while the inside was chewy with sweet red bean paste filling. The eat-in space at the shop was shaded, but there was no air conditioning, so it was not cool at all. It was a hot day, so the mochi was delicious, but it was hard to finish eating due to the heat.

If you come to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, you must try the "Ume-ga-eshi mochi" as my husband insists... There are various shops selling it, so it's hard to choose. I searched online and found a site that explains the differences between each shop... I don't have the passion to compare them all. However, I found a shop with lovely interior that I instantly fell in love with! They serve the freshly baked mochi wrapped in paper. You can enjoy it standing at the counter in the back of the shop. It was piping hot! The sweetness was just right, and it was delicious.

I visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture in August 2023. It is considered the head shrine of approximately 12,000 shrines nationwide that enshrine Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the god of learning, culture, and the arts. In addition to paying respects, it is customary to visit the surrounding famous spots, known as "saifu-mairi." Just like visiting Ise Jingu Shrine (O-Ise-mairi) or Kotohira-gu Shrine (Konpira-mairi), "saifu-mairi" has been a tradition for a long time. I went to Yasutake to buy Dazaifu's specialty "Umegae mochi." This famous confectionery is derived from the story of offering Michizane's beloved plum and mochi together when he was buried. It is a grilled mochi wrapped in sweet bean paste, with each shop having subtly different flavors. Although I wanted to compare them, I had to take out Umegae mochi quickly with my family this time. The mochi is crispy on the outside from grilling, soft on the inside, and the bean paste has a refined sweetness. It seems to be made with Tokachi red beans. My family all said it was delicious and finished it quickly. It's a place that is not easy to visit often, but I would like to come back again. Thank you for the meal.

I visited this shop when I visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka. There are several shops along the approach to the shrine, and I found out that this shop is famous for sweets in Dazaifu, so I decided to buy some. The staff warned me that it was hot, but it was hotter than I expected, so be careful when you start eating. If you use the shop, you can also have cold tea brewed, which is perfect for a break. You can eat one for 150 yen, so I highly recommend it when visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

Umegae mochi @ Yasutake, Dazaifu There are several shops in Dazaifu that sell Umegae mochi, but I chose to visit Yasutake because they bake it on the spot, so you can enjoy it fresh, they have a space to eat, and they offer complimentary tea. I was drawn to these features. I enjoyed the delicate sweetness of the red bean paste made from Hokkaido adzuki beans and the chewy texture of the mochi made from domestic glutinous rice. You can leisurely enjoy your treat in the walk-in space next to the shop. The complimentary tea was a nice touch too. Now, with my belly filled with sweet red bean paste, I will head back to Hakata. As soon as I arrived, I could feel the atmosphere of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine at this station, which I love. I hope to come back here in three years when the main hall is completed. ❤

I visited during the day on a regular day!! The umegae mochi is freshly made, so it's piping hot with a crispy outer layer and a chewy texture inside, along with the perfect sweet red bean paste filling - it's super delicious!! The mochi here is quite substantial, giving it a nice weighty feel. When you make a purchase, you also get a complimentary cold tea, which is another attractive point! It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Unexpectedly found these at the local supermarket, and they were in the frozen section. They have a simple and rustic flavor. The dough itself is not very sweet, but the balance with the red bean paste inside is delicious. Since they are already baked, there is a nice fragrant aroma that enhances the taste. I prefer them slightly thawed for a softer texture, but toasting them lightly in a toaster could also be a good idea.

I visited after visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It was around lunchtime on a weekday, but the store was bustling with tourists. One costs ¥130. It was piping hot when served, but the red bean paste was plentiful and delicious! I enjoyed it while standing in the eat-in area at the back of the store, sipping cold barley tea. It was very delicious.

I went to see the beautiful hydrangea flower hand-washing ceremony at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is an annual tradition at this time of year. I was impressed when I saw it two years ago, and I had planned to go last year as well, but I missed the timing. This year, I checked the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine website every day after the hydrangeas started blooming, and two days ago, it was announced that the hydrangea flower hand-washing ceremony had begun, so I hurried to go. Speaking of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, I always buy umegaemochi at Kasanoya, but there was a new, beautiful store with a long line, so today I went to Yasutake-san's. There was a demonstration in the back, and the modern and lovely store was nice. Kasanoya's umegaemochi had a softer feel, but this one was delicious too.

I want to try all the different foods, but I don't have much room in my stomach, so I'll have to try one at a time! This time, I was determined to try Yasutake's Ume-gaeshi Mochi that I missed out on last time. But when I look at the other options available, it's hard to decide. I resisted the temptation and purchased one Ume-gaeshi Mochi. I didn't realize that Ume-gaeshi Mochi could vary so much depending on the shop. The taste of the sweet bean paste, the firmness of the mochi, and the aroma are all different. - Sweet bean paste is just right, not too sweet, and it's so hot that I might burn my mouth! It's just the way I like it. - The mochi has a nice chewy texture! The smell of it being grilled is indescribable. It's a taste that you can only experience here. I want to try another one, but I have dinner to think about, so I'll have to resist. I look forward to trying a different shop's Ume-gaeshi Mochi next time and discovering the differences. For now, it's my number one favorite!

I started a gourmet website for Mitomi Emon. Homepage "https://blog.33inc.jp/" Instagram "@mitomi_emon" What is Umegae mochi!? It is a specialty of Dazaifu, with about 20 shops lining the approach. It is a grilled mochi with a thin layer of red bean paste wrapped in it, giving it a distinctive crispy aroma. It is said that it originated from offering mochi with plum branches to a tomb where mochi was a favorite food. It has become a popular souvenir for travelers from all over the country. Let's visit one of the popular shops, "Umegae mochi Yasutake Honpo". With roots dating back to the Kamakura period, Yasutake is a historical shop that has been modernized and reopened in 2021. The workshop on-site draws you in with its fragrant smell. The red bean paste is made with carefully selected brand red beans, resulting in an elegant sweetness with a hint of salt to enhance the flavor. The crispy mochi skin adds a nice accent, making it a delightful snack. How about getting one as a souvenir from the approach?

- Access & Appearance On the way to Tenmangu Shrine, there are many shops selling umegae mochi along the street, but this one is cheap (is it the main shop?). - Seating & Interior There is a standing eating space inside. The ceiling and walls have a modern feel. - Staff & Service You get a cup of tea with each umegae mochi you order. - Menu There is only one option: umegae mochi. - Food Umegae mochi... I didn't feel that strongly about it when I had it in the past, but now it's really delicious and to my taste. Maybe it's because I'm getting older. The crispy texture of the mochi is good. It's best when it's freshly baked.

After taking a break at Starbucks, I stopped by the shop "Yasutake" for umagae mochi. This shop has a luxurious and sophisticated atmosphere compared to other umagae mochi shops in Omotesando, and it was decided as the family souvenir shop because of its high ratings on Tabelog. It seems like they renovated about a year and a half ago and now have a stylish vibe. Unlike the traditional hand-made umagae mochi, this shop mainly uses a semi-automatic process, which seems to be popular and profitable. The packaging for souvenirs exudes a sense of luxury, and I was surprised to find out that the souvenirs are served hot off the grill, which made me worry about taking them home. I bought a pack of 6 umagae mochi for 780 yen, and although they were fine to carry around, they don't last long, so it's best to eat them soon. I resisted the temptation to eat one on the spot, thinking my family wouldn't notice, but ended up waiting. Even though my boss wasn't very interested, he ended up eating most of them, so it worked out well in the end. I also had one at home later, and while it couldn't compare to the freshly made ones, the balance of sweet bean paste and mochi was still delicious even when cold. Whether for snacking or as a gift, I recommend "Yasutake" for their umagae mochi, as their packaging is great. The expiration date is the next day, and you can also freeze them, making them a good buy even for those far away. They also have online sales, so give them a try. It was delicious, thank you for the meal. Speaking of Dazaifu, it's all about Umegae mochi! This delicious snack consists of a grilled rice cake filled with sweet red bean paste, with a plum pattern stamped on top. Despite the name, there are actually no plums in it (lol). Along the approach to Dazaifu, there are many Umegae mochi shops, each with its own unique style. Yasutake is one of the popular ones, known for its perfectly grilled outer layer and just the right amount of salt in the rice cake. Once you have one, you'll definitely want another Umegae mochi!

The famous specialty of Dazaifu, Ume-ga-eshi mochi! When visiting Dazaifu, I knew I had to try the freshly made Ume-ga-eshi mochi, so I looked around at different shops and decided on this one. The shop had a beautiful interior, and you could watch them being baked right there. You can order just one piece, and the staff will ask if you want to eat it on the spot or take it to go. If you choose to eat it there, they will give you a freshly baked one through a small window! It's piping hot, so be careful if you're sensitive to heat. The outside is crispy, and of course, freshly baked is the best. Different shops have different levels of sweetness in the red bean paste and prices, so it's fun to try and compare them.

Fukuoka is known for "Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine," and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is known for "Umegaemochi." Umegaemochi (130 yen) @umegaemochi_yasutake. I came to Fukuoka and decided to visit the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. I took a bus from Hakata, one station away from Kokura on the Shinkansen, to get there. The bus departs from Hakata Bus Terminal. It was a bit confusing to find the terminal even though it is adjacent to Hakata Station. When I arrived 8 minutes before the 9:15 departure, there was a long line at the bus stop. The staff informed us that the bus has a capacity of 45 people, so we might not all get on. When the bus arrived, there were already people up to the front of the line. I was disappointed, but when they asked if anyone would stand, I impulsively said I would. The bus departed, and I immediately regretted my decision. The bus journey took about 45 minutes due to some traffic, and we arrived a little after 10:00. The approach to the shrine was bustling with shops selling Umegaemochi. I remembered a friend telling me that Dazaifu is full of Umegaemochi, and I couldn't think of any other options for souvenirs. I decided to try one freshly baked piece from a modern-looking shop. It was still hot and delicious. The mochi was crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. I wanted some tea, but I only had water in a bottle with me. After recharging with the snack, I headed to the shrine for a visit.

I chose this shop for comparison with handmade taiyaki. The skin was crispy and had a crunchy texture when bitten into. The filling here seemed like it was pre-made, but there was no noticeable difference in taste. In the comparison between handmade and machine-made taiyaki, neither stood out as better. There is no need to come all the way to Dazaifu to buy from this shop, which is a regular at local product exhibitions.
