On a regular day off for lunch, I rode my bike from home to Tenjin. This time, I decided to have a delicious grilled mackerel set meal at the restaurant called "Makoto". Located right next to the Mizukami Tenmangu Shrine in Tenjin, this restaurant has been serving delicious grilled mackerel for half a century since its establishment in 1973. While they also serve sashimi and other dishes as an izakaya in the evening, during lunchtime, they only offer a grilled mackerel set meal (1000 yen including tax). There is no menu for lunch, and once you enter, you will automatically be served this grilled mackerel set meal. However, the reputation of their grilled mackerel is well-known, and there is usually a line forming even before the 11:00 am opening time. On this day, when I arrived about 20 minutes before opening, there were already four people ahead of me, and by the time they opened, there were about 10 people in line. As the opening time arrived, we were led into the restaurant one by one. As a solo customer, I was seated at the counter. On the other side of the counter, I could hear the sound of the second-generation master, the son of the founder, grilling the mackerel. The fragrant smell wafted over, making me even more eager to try it. After waiting for a while, I was served chilled tofu, pickles, and cold tea. The tea was served in a teacup, which added to the atmosphere. Finally, the large grilled mackerel, rice, and miso soup were served. You can have up to two servings of rice. I immediately tried a piece of the grilled mackerel with my chopsticks. The skin was crispy, but the flesh inside was tender. I first tried the mackerel without any seasoning, and the rich flavor of the fish was evident. It was really delicious. I then tried it with grated daikon radish and soy sauce, and the combination of flavors was amazing. The soy sauce enhanced the umami of the mackerel without overpowering it, creating a perfect harmony. Of course, the rice went well with the mackerel. I couldn't help but ask for a second serving of rice. Despite the large piece of grilled mackerel, there were hardly any leftovers except for a few bones. Under the mackerel, there was shredded cabbage that had absorbed the delicious flavor of the fish. I heard that this restaurant buys a large amount of mackerel at a certain time, stores it in a dedicated freezer, and uses it gradually, and it was clear that they use high-quality ingredients. I've had grilled mackerel at various places, but this meal left me feeling incredibly happy afterwards, which was a first for me. The grilled mackerel was so delicious that it's easy to see why so many people are hooked on it. It was a very satisfying lunch.
