BLANY
Shimokitazawa's Minami-guchi Shotengai. Many places are currently undergoing renovation, adding to the chaotic atmosphere. The building has apparel shops on the first floor, a live house in the basement, and a spiral staircase leading to "Steak-ya Matsuya," a second brand of Gyudon (beef bowl) restaurant Matsuya, on the second floor. Despite the flashy sign, it doesn't stand out much in the Shimokitazawa streets. However, it is a popular restaurant that can get crowded depending on the time. The steak is affordable and satisfying, making it quite enticing. There is a ticket machine outside the shop with a clear menu in color photos, but it may be difficult to decide on a combination on the spot. There is a menu chart on the staircase, so it's best to narrow down your choices before ordering. I chose the set of two steaks, "Roast & Megane (1,700 yen)." Each portion is 150g, and overall, it's quite generous. The price of 1,700 yen includes a salad, with an additional 100 yen. It's best to order something to refresh your palate as having just meat may be unbalanced. The Roast is from Mexico, and the Megane, said to be a rare cut, is from the USA. Both have a satisfying chewiness that makes you feel like you're really eating meat. This is what American-style steak is all about! Rice is refillable, and you need to order it from the staff. You can try various ways of eating, such as with sauce, salt, pepper, wasabi, soy sauce, etc. It's great that you can experiment with different flavors. Despite saying I prefer American-style, I found that wasabi soy sauce tasted the best with the steak (laughs). The 60s American music playing in the background and the friendly staff add to the experience. Next time, I might try the hamburger.
