I came to Hakata on a summer trip to Kyushu in 2020. It has been 4 and a half years since I last visited Hakata. During my visit in early August, with Fukuoka seeing over 100 new cases of COVID-19 daily, I decided to avoid crowded areas like Nakasu and Tenjin and instead drink near Hakata Station for safety. I made a reservation at the popular Izakaya Hikari near Yodobashi Camera. It was my first visit on a Saturday evening at 7 pm. The restaurant has counter seats on the right and table seats on the left, with a casual Izakaya atmosphere. I sat at the counter, and surprisingly, it was not too crowded, perhaps due to the Bon holidays. I started with a bottle of beer, specifically Super Dry, and ordered a sashimi platter. The appetizer was a dish of rapeseed flowers and bamboo shoots with sesame dressing. The sashimi platter included nine varieties such as amberjack, spear squid, local octopus, tuna, ark shell, turban shell, flounder, button shrimp, and sand lance, priced at 1,692 yen before tax with a 10% discount on Saturdays. I enjoyed it with the sweet Ni-bishi soy sauce from Hakata. For drinks, I had Hakata no Mori Junmai sake, followed by Shiraito Junmai Ginjo sake, both of which were delightful. I also ordered a light potato salad for a palate cleanser. Moving on to shochu, I tried Suikyo Hita-ji Moromi barley shochu, and then Rokudaime Yuri sweet potato shochu from Koshikijima. I also had a soft tofu dish and traditional dashimaki tamago, followed by a hot spring water mixed with Miyama's Sangetsu sweet potato shochu. The total bill included the appetizer, sashimi platter, potato salad, tofu, dashimaki tamago, beers, sakes, and shochus. The background music was nostalgic Japanese songs, creating a calming atmosphere. The restaurant offers various regional dishes like Kumamoto's horse sashimi, Oita's conger eel tempura, Yamaguchi's fried fugu, Nagasaki's cuttlefish, Kochi's bonito, and Fukuoka's whale meat. While the prices are reasonable, the variety of dishes is not extensive. Despite the current situation making it difficult to interact with staff and customers, I still had an enjoyable two hours. It was a delightful meal.
