On a regular lunchtime, I visited "Menya Kentora Tenjin Honten" located about a 3-minute walk from Tenjin Minami Station in Fukuoka City. Their concept is to serve a "hearty and ruggedly manly bowl of noodles". It is one of the top ramen shops in Hakata with long queues. They have three locations: the main store in Tenjin, Hakata Deitos store, and Fukuoka PARCO store. The owner trained at the famous "Inosho" in Nerima, Tokyo, so expectations were high.
Store:
Located a little off the main street in front of Tenjin Minami Station, across from Bic Camera. The shop has black walls and a white noren curtain, giving off a manly vibe as per their concept. Arrived around 1:30 pm and there was a line of about 10 people, but it moved quickly. We entered the store in about 30 minutes. The interior is unified in monochrome and has a calm atmosphere. Despite its manly concept, it feels clean and welcoming, suitable for women as well. The energetic voices of the staff can be heard. There are about 15 counter seats, mostly occupied by solo diners, but there were also many tourists, possibly Koreans.
Menu:
They operate on a food ticket system. Their main offerings are rich tsukemen, spicy tsukemen, and spicy fish ramen. You can get a free size-up to medium. This time, I ordered the Rich Tsukemen (regular size) for 1,050 yen. It arrived in about 10 minutes. The soup is a rich blend of pork bones, chicken bones, aromatic vegetables, and seafood simmered for 7 hours. It has a nice fish powder aroma. The soup is thick with a slight sweetness and balanced with a mild acidity, giving it a refreshing taste. Toppings include chashu, thick menma, chopped green onions, keeping it simple. The noodles are thick noodles made from domestic wheat, firm and chewy, holding up well to the rich broth. Condiments on the table include garlic, vinegar, black pepper, and ichimi chili pepper for flavor adjustments. I enjoyed changing the taste as I ate. The vinegar added a refreshing touch as I progressed through the meal. I finished by diluting the soup with bonito broth, but be careful as it's quite hot.
Overall:
Having tried many tsukemen in Tokyo, I was satisfied with the quality of the tsukemen here. Despite the increasing availability, authentic tsukemen like this is still a rare find in Fukuoka. It's a valuable gem. Thank you for the meal.
