I love matcha-flavored sweets, so whenever I come across them, I can't resist buying them. I tried a set of matcha warabi mochi and jelly. I chilled them in the fridge before eating. They had a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and were quite sweet, with a subtle matcha flavor. The size of each piece was just right, and since they have a long shelf life, I can keep them in the fridge for a quick snack. It was a delightful treat.

Today I went to the Mitsukoshi-mae/Nihonbashi area. I don't come to Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi often, so I decided to look for some rare and unique shops. It seems that "Noa de Bour" is quite popular, with people gathering there since opening. However, I spotted a shop on the other side that I haven't seen before - "Chanowa Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Store". Upon checking later, it seems that this is the only directly operated store in Tokyo, with the main store located in Hiroshima. As the name suggests, it is a tea shop that mainly offers sweets using matcha. They have a variety of sweets such as matcha roll cake, gateau chocolat, butter cake, financier, manju, and baumkuchen. Since it was a hot day and I couldn't go straight home, I focused on the items that can be stored at room temperature. I took them home and tried them out. Here's what I had:
- Matcha baumkuchen: A baumkuchen with matcha mixed in. The bitterness of matcha is distinct, but the texture of the cake was slightly dry.
- Matcha momiji manju: A momiji manju from Hiroshima, with matcha mixed inside. The moist and sweet dough contains red bean paste, giving it a rich sweetness.
- Matcha butter cake: I bought the regular version as the higher-priced one required a reservation. The cake was fully infused with matcha, giving a strong bitterness at first followed by the richness of butter. It lasts for a few days, so you can enjoy it gradually. Even if you're not a fan of overly sweet treats, the strong matcha flavor makes it enjoyable. For matcha lovers or those looking for unique shops, this place is worth a visit. Thank you for the meal!

"I went to Mitsukoshi for a bit." The shop I visited was Chano Wa, a tea shop. I bought some at SOGO in Hiroshima, and it was well received at home, so I wanted to buy more. I'm happy that there are more Hiroshima fans, so I recommended it to my colleagues at work. I bought not only Matcha Mangetsu, but also various other products, and it became quite a volume.

First visit 20170121 (No.738) This seems to be a new, authentic matcha specialty shop created by the long-established Hiroshima store "Ocha no Surugaen," which has been in business for 50 years. Among the confectionery shops selling at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi, this shop seems to have a lower reputation and not many customers in the store. However, I have recently come to like matcha, so I decided to purchase some deliberately (laughs). Golden Matcha Financier 258 yen The shape is that of a financier, but the flavor of matcha is stronger than the flavor of almond powder, with the unique bitterness of matcha, making it a dessert that is not to my liking (cries). It may be a matter of personal preference, but it's not something I would buy again (cries). Thank you for the meal.

A shop in Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi that specializes in matcha sweets. I looked it up and it seems like it was originally a mail-order shop. I wanted to try their matcha roll cake that was mentioned in the reviews, but unfortunately it is currently on hold. Oh well! I ended up buying various sweets such as souffle, financiers, matcha chocolate sandwiched langues de chat, and daifuku. I tried them all, but they were somewhat lacking in something special. Personally, I love the harmony of whipped cream and matcha, so I hope the matcha roll cake will make a comeback! Thank you for the meal.

I had some errands in Nihonbashi, so I decided to stop by the Mitsukoshi department store. I love department stores because they are so fun! While walking through the basement floor, I was tempted by many things and had a hard time deciding. This time, I chose "Chano Wa!" ☆Half-baked fluffy matcha soufflé - It was incredibly fluffy and moist inside! It was delicious, and I appreciated that it wasn't too sweet. ☆Matcha green tea chocolate sandwich - The fluffy dough with matcha green tea chocolate inside had a great matcha flavor. It was irresistible for a matcha lover like me. ☆Overall☆ I bought these for the first time, and they were really delicious. I liked the Japanese confectionery-like feel, and the appearance was stylish too! I recommend them as souvenirs.

The "Moist and Luxurious Matcha Full Moon Cake" from Chanokan is basically a matcha butter cake that is moist and rich in flavor. As soon as you take a bite, you'll experience the rich taste of matcha that quickly disappears because it's so delicious. It's recommended to buy a whole cake and it's perfect as a gift too! You can order it from Hiroshima or find it at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi in Tokyo!

The most intense and delicious gâteau chocolat I've ever had. Made with Valrhona's Ivorie and matcha powder that costs 50,000 yen per kilo. Created by award-winning pastry chef Hanaguchi from Patisserie Image. The first impression is the aroma of matcha, followed by the rich sweetness of chocolate, leaving a lingering matcha aftertaste on the plate. Both flavors shine brightly without overpowering each other, creating a perfectly balanced taste.

As I was wandering around the food section of Mitsukoshi, I tried a sample of matcha-flavored sweets. It was like a delicious madeleine with a strong matcha flavor. Although I bought other snacks for my errands, I couldn't resist the salted daifuku when I passed by the store again. When I got home and tried it, it was soft and had a great mix of matcha, cream, and red bean paste. It's not the traditional choice, but the balance is perfect. Next time, I'll buy other items as gifts.

Thanks to my frequent trips to Kyoto, I have developed a taste for matcha sweets. I discovered a shop in Mitsukoshi that reminded me of Ma Blanc, so I decided to try it out. They had matcha sweets called "Maru Branch" and "Chano Kan", which were confusingly similar. I thought it was from Kyoto or Nara, but it turned out to be from Hiroshima. They also had maple manju, which was a surprise. The shop was called Surugaen, from Shizuoka. I bought a matcha gato chocolate called "New Moon" for 2160 yen. They also had a "Full Moon" version for 1500 yen, which I found out was a matcha cake with butter, while the "New Moon" had white chocolate. I also tried a matcha cake called "Ten no Kiwami" with chestnuts, which reminded me of Adachi Onoemon's naming style. It was cheaper at 3000 yen, but the texture was too fluffy for my liking. In the end, I preferred the "New Moon" cake, which had a firmer texture on the outside and a moist pound cake-like interior. I also tried a matcha financier for about 250 yen, which was incredibly moist and turned my hands green when I touched it.

I didn't know that the main store is in Hiroshima... I tried this matcha butter cake at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi before and it was so delicious that I decided to buy it as a gift this time. I live in Ehime, so Hiroshima is closer, right? (laughs) At Mitsukoshi, many foreigners were buying this cake in large quantities. This cake seems to be popular with both foreigners and Japanese people because it is sweet and very moist. The rich taste and aroma of butter and the slight bitterness of matcha match wonderfully. It goes well with tea, coffee, black tea, or even milk (laughs). Each cake is handmade, so it is a bit expensive and a bit small, but it is satisfying enough. This time, I ate it as it is, but it would also be delicious with whipped cream or red bean paste (*´▽`*). Thank you for the meal!

I received a sample of a baked confection called "Full Moon" for 1,620 yen at the Depachika of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. It had a strong matcha flavor and was moist, similar to the matcha financiers I sometimes receive as a bonus from Maruyama Nori Shop Tsukuba Factory Store. It was delicious and seemed like a good choice for a New Year's gift. There was also a more luxurious-looking confection called "New Moon" priced at 2,160 yen, made with French white chocolate for a rich and moist taste. Although it had a stronger and sweeter flavor, it had a similar texture to high-quality matcha castella. While it may not have the same intense matcha flavor as "Full Moon," it was still enjoyable. However, the short shelf life of one week in the refrigerator may be a drawback for a New Year's gift, but it is suitable for personal consumption.

[May 2015] I was recommended to try the matcha butter cake by an acquaintance! When I went there, there were both cheap and expensive options. I couldn't decide which one to choose, so I tried a sample. After tasting it, I thought maybe the expensive one is better? I ended up buying it. The cake was moist with a strong matcha flavor. It was delicious! However, it was a bit pricey and the level of moistness and matcha flavor was not exactly to my personal preference, so I probably won't buy it again. I can understand how some people might really love it, though! It would make a great gift as it comes in a wooden box!
[June 2014] There were so many matcha sweets available, and I was drawn to them... I purchased the following items:
Matcha financiers
Matcha baumkuchen
There are many similar sweets, but it's hard to find one that matches my taste in terms of moistness and matcha flavor. These ones were quite moist but I felt like they could use a bit more matcha flavor. They also have whole baumkuchen and cakes in the store, which would make great gifts. With so many matcha products available, I feel like I want to try more and compare them!

In the basement of Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi, there is a shop called Chano Wa that serves tea and sweets using tea and matcha from Hiroshima. This shop seems to be only in Tokyo. They have a Nihonbashi store limited item called "Rich Matcha Premium Fresh Roll (Heaven's Extreme)" for 1,080 yen, but it's a half size. They say the maximum carrying time is 2 hours, so I rushed back within 2 hours. The ice pack was still cold enough when I got home. Let's enjoy it after everyone returns home. The matcha flavor is very strong and delicious.

I was sick with the flu and a cold for a week, but finally recovered. Now my son is sick with a high fever, so my parents came to help take care of him. As a thank you, I decided to buy some sweets from a shop in Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store. I bought a cake as a gift and also got a "Mochi Mochi no Tsuki" dorayaki for myself. The dorayaki was 37g and had a chewy texture with green tea in the skin and red bean paste inside. It was a bit pricey at ¥172 for 37g, but still a unique and tasty treat.

Today, I wandered around the Mitsukoshi department store to choose a souvenir for a customer. I was captivated by a sample of matcha cake and ended up buying one for myself. The one I purchased was the "Moist Matcha Butter Cake" priced at 1,545 yen. The store described it as a matcha cake that shines in a golden color fitting of its name, "Matcha Full Moon." It is carefully baked to achieve a luxurious moist texture. The rich flavor of butter combined with the slightly bitter matcha creates a delicious butter cake!

Back when I was a child, about 45 years ago, there was a tradition of giving Christmas cakes to families with small children in the neighborhood. At that time, refrigerators were not common, so all Christmas cakes were butter cakes. It was a cake for "Christmas presents to children." My family had three siblings, so there were times when we received over 10 whole cakes. It was nice, but with butter cakes, the amount was too much to eat. There were times when we had to eat cake every day until New Year's. I eventually got tired of Christmas cakes and even grew to dislike them. I lost interest in sweet things.
******************************************************************************
As I reminisced about those old memories and took a bite, I realized that this cake has a mixture of bitterness and sweetness. The aroma and flavor of matcha stimulate my brainstem. Unlike the butter cakes from the past, this one is not overpowering and is easy to eat. Matcha ice cream is available from Häagen-Dazs, but I found this cake to be more refined. I am very satisfied. However, I still can't eat a large amount at once.

Connected directly to Mitsukoshi-mae Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, this shop is located on the basement floor of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. It is a sweets shop operated by "Ochanosurugoen," founded 50 years ago in Hiroshima, and this is their only location in Tokyo. The shop has a calm, traditional Japanese atmosphere, with a display case filled with sweets made with matcha. The signature item is the "Luxurious Matcha Full Moon" butter cake, but they also offer a variety of other matcha sweets such as the "New Moon" pure matcha gateau chocolat, "Year Ring Baum," and "Golden Matcha Financier." They also have a Hiroshima specialty, the "Matcha Momiji Manju." I purchased the "Rich Matcha Premium Fresh Roll," which they claim to be the ultimate matcha roll cake. It is made using a recipe by the chef from Hiroshima's roll cake and macaron specialty shop "Atelier de Image," and features high-quality Uji tea "Kintenko" in abundance. Both the cake and cream have a strong matcha flavor, reminiscent of enjoying a rich matcha drink. The texture of the cake is slightly firm, so I would prefer it to be more moist. A must-try for matcha lovers.

I tried a shop that originated in Hiroshima that has finally opened in Tokyo. I bought a whole matcha gateau chocolat for ¥2100 as a Mother's Day gift, and a matcha souffle for myself for ¥260. The matcha souffle seemed a bit pricey for its size, but it was fluffy and delicious. The matcha gateau chocolat, which was rich with plenty of matcha, received high praise at home. It made me feel like I made a good choice.

I came to Nihonbashi and wanted to buy some sweets to take with me, so I wandered around. I bought Salt Daifuku for 191 yen, which has matcha cream and red bean paste inside. The matcha cream was delicious. I also bought New Tea Jelly for 450 yen, which is a refreshing tea jelly topped with black honey. The jelly is very delicious. Mitsukoshi has many food stores, so it's easy to get lost. Everything looks so delicious. The Tennyo on the first floor is also a must-see.
