When it comes to eel in Yanagawa, steamed eel in a bamboo steamer is a popular choice. I visited the popular Wakamatsuya restaurant, which has a nice atmosphere and private rooms as well as table seating. Located by the riverside where you can enjoy watching the river cruises, the location is excellent. I arrived before the opening and there was already a line forming, so I waited for about 30 minutes. I ordered the steamed eel and eel roll, both in large portions. The rice was packed tightly so I recommend not getting the large portion. The tender and juicy eel, coated in a sweet sauce, paired perfectly with the aroma of the steamed rice. I also enjoyed the eel roll and liver sashimi. The prices are on the higher side, but the satisfaction is guaranteed. #Eel #SteamedEel #Wakamatsuya #Yanagawa #FukuokaPrefecture #LiverSashimi #EelRoll #RiverCruise

I received a mini eel set which included 2 pieces of eel, half portion of rice, 2 eel rolls, a small portion of pickles, and eel liver. I also wanted to try the steamed set, but I couldn't resist the pickles. Luckily, they offer this set only on weekdays so I was able to try everything. The fluffy eel was not too sweet and very delicious, and the pickles had just the right amount of sourness.

I was able to be seated right away since it was right after opening. However, the restaurant was quite crowded. I ordered the steamed eel on rice, and it was served in less than 10 minutes. It came with 4 pieces of eel on top of thick shredded egg, along with eel liver and pickles. The taste was sweeter compared to another famous restaurant in Yanagawa, but it wasn't too heavy. Personally, I prefer this place.

After going down the river in Yanagawa, I had an eel steamed set meal at Wakamatsuya. It was crowded during the Obon period, so I received a numbered ticket and waited for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Despite the intense heat, there were chairs in the lobby of Wakamatsuya, so I could wait comfortably. I was guided to the second floor, and the eel steamed set meal was served without much more waiting. The set meal includes steamed eel and eel rolls. The steamed eel was hot and delicious, bringing out the true flavor of the eel.

The outside of the eel was crispy and well-cooked, while the inside was fluffy and the flavor of the rice was maintained even as time passed. The eel was delicious, possibly due to being steamed in a steamer. The only downside was the long waiting time. It was the most delicious eel I've ever had in my life.

Every year around this time, we go out to eat eel, but this year we decided to try the Yanagawa area! I had the steamed eel, and my husband had the set meal. The seasoning was just right, not too strong! The rolled omelette was a bit sweet. It didn't seem to have sticky rice in it. It was just delicious.

When I came to Yanagawa, there wasn't much to do other than river cruising and eating eel. I heard that if you want to eat eel in Yanagawa, it has to be from a famous restaurant, so I did some research. The famous options seemed to be "Honkichiya" or "Wakamatsuya". Since Honkichiya is closed on Mondays, I ended up going to Wakamatsuya. I called two days in advance to make a reservation, but they were fully booked, so I was told to come directly. They open at 11 am, so I arrived a little after that. I was seated in the new building, away from the tables with a view of the river. There were a few Korean families and a group of Japanese who seemed already drunk in the tatami room. I was not very hungry because I had a big breakfast buffet, so I opted for the weekday limited "Mini Eel Steamed Set Meal". I also ordered a craft beer from Yanagawa. The pickles arrived first, which I quickly finished. Then the eel steamed set meal came. The rice, steamed in a steamer, was deliciously chewy and well-flavored. It was similar to okowa or chimaki. The eel pieces were small because it was a mini set, and the eel flavor was subtle. I regretted not ordering more. The tamago-yaki with eel came later. It was fluffy egg with eel inside. I ordered a glass of local sake, served at room temperature, as I felt like I needed more alcohol. It was an ordinary sake. Overall, I was satisfied with the experience. When I left, there was a line forming. It seems like arriving early is a good idea. If I have the chance to visit again, I would skip breakfast and go for the premium eel.

I came on a trip wanting to eat here since the day before. I arrived around 11:10 AM and there were already 40 groups waiting. While I was waiting, the waitlist grew to as many as 50 groups. Well, I guess it's expected since it's during a festival. I ended up waiting for about an hour before being seated. I ordered the reliable steamed noodles with toppings and some pickles to take home. It's a popular restaurant that still maintains the traditional flavors. I would love to go again.

During my food journey in Fukuoka, I went to Hoshino Seicha in Hoshino Village to buy new tea and had lunch here on the way back. While you can find eel steamed in a steamer in Tokyo or Fukuoka city, I believe that the best place to enjoy it is here. This time, I ordered the great value "Joujou Unagi Steamed in a Steamer" set, which came with a large eel roll and udon. The difference between regular and plum is the amount of eel, with the "Joujou" having more layers of eel stacked on top. I was completely satisfied with the amount and taste. The eel, steamed hot, and the eel sauce soaked into every grain of the piping hot rice. As I savored it, the flavor exploded along with the steam, reaching from my mouth to my head. It's such a joy to eat delicious food! However, I always regret ordering too much and feeling like my stomach is about to burst.

I had the authentic eel (steamed in a bamboo steamer) in Yanagawa. This place seems to be a popular renowned restaurant in Yanagawa. I anticipated a crowd on Sunday, so I arrived early, received a ticket 20 minutes before opening, and was able to enter about 30 minutes later. The eel was thick and fluffy, very delicious. Not only the eel, but the rice also soaked up the sauce and was very satisfying. I would like to visit this place again when I come back to Yanagawa.

After going down the river, I had a late lunch on a weekday. I had a half-size mini eel steamed kaiseki meal from the weekday limited menu. It was deliciously fragrant! There were few customers, so I was able to relax. The displayed hina dolls and decorations were also impressive.

I met up with my university friends after a long time and we went to eat together. It was my first time trying steamed basket steamed, and I was really impressed by the taste that I had never experienced before. I personally think it is the best eel in Yanagawa. The atmosphere of the restaurant and the customer service were also impressive. My friends, who I met after a long time, also said they would like to come back again. Thank you very much.

I went after a long time. Despite having a lot of seats, I had to wait quite a bit. I lined up at 13:30, but had to wait for 30 minutes. There were a lot of Korean and Chinese people, giving the impression that Yufuin has become a popular tourist destination. As a local, it's both happy and sad to see.

I have eaten eel at several shops in Yanagawa, but it has been two years since I last visited Wakamatsuya. When you come here, it's a must to order the steamed eel. I ordered the steamed eel with 4 slices for ¥3,930. Although 4 slices may seem small, it was enough to make me feel full. It would be nice if they had a menu option for younger people with around 6 slices for around ¥4,000. I heard you can get a larger portion for an additional ¥400, but I wasn't sure if it meant more eel or more rice, so I left without ordering it. As for the taste, the sauce was slightly sweeter than usual, personally I would prefer it to be a bit less sweet. However, I am likely to come back again. Construction work has started on the riverbank in front of the restaurant, and the water level in the river is low. While river cruises are still operating in other areas, it seems like it will take about 3 years for the construction in front of Wakamatsuya to be completed. I look forward to seeing the improved river soon.

Eel starts preparing for hibernation when the water temperature drops below 10°C, making it taste better. The eel steamed in a steamer is a dish where hot rice mixed with a secret sauce is steamed in a steamer, topped with grilled eel and shredded omelette. The eel steamed in a steamer at Wakamatsuya in Yanagawa is crispy and fragrant on the outside, with a moist and tender inside. It is delicious and very hot.

When it comes to Yanagawa, the classic activities are river cruises and eating the famous eel steamed in a bamboo steamer. Last time I came to this restaurant, I tried the steamed eel. This time, I ordered the grilled eel set meal with bamboo. The sauce was thick and slightly sweet, similar to the sauce on mitarashi dango, but it was delicious. I don't usually use much sansho pepper, but they used quite a bit here.

The steamed and grilled eel served in a steamer was plump and the rice was chewy until the very end, making it different from the usual grilled eel. The eel roll with egg was fluffy with the sauce soaked in. The restaurant was very spacious with a nice view of the garden, creating a great atmosphere. While grilled eel is good, the steamed eel was also delicious, so I might have a hard time choosing in the future.笑

On the way back from Kurokawa Onsen, we stopped by Yanagawa for lunch. We chose Wakamatsu-ya for our meal, where we received a number card, filled in the number of people, and waited. Although many customers preferred the main building, we were fine with an available table in the new building on the second floor with a view of the river. We ordered the "eel steamed in a bamboo basket" (unagi seiro) with extra eel. When the dish arrived, we were surprised to see that the eel was piled on top of the rice, and the steamed basket was inside a large container. This kept the dish hot for a long time, and it was my first time trying eel prepared this way. It was delicious. After the meal, we walked around Yanagawa and noticed the aroma of grilled eel coming from various eel restaurants. It was interesting to learn that Yanagawa is a town with many eel cuisine establishments.

I came to Yukuhashi City in Fukuoka Prefecture to have steamed eel in a steamed basket. Surprisingly, it was my first time at Wakamatsuya since my school trip. The steamed eel here is completely different from the eel dish called "unaju" that you can find in Kanto region. Both the eel and rice are steamed together, making the eel and rice soft and flavorful with sweet and savory sauce. There is also Yukuhashi High School nearby, where athlete Shuzo Matsuoka attended. I also enjoyed a boat ride down the river. I would like to visit Yukuhashi again on a personal trip next time.

This is my first time in Yanagawa. Yanagawa is famous for its river cruises, but its eel dishes are also well-known nationwide. I personally prefer the Kansai-style taste, with Aichi Prefecture being my favorite. I arrived at the restaurant at 12:50 on Saturday. I received a reservation ticket with a number written on it at the entrance, and informed the cashier of the number of people in my party. After waiting for about 30 minutes, we were seated. A server brought us a pot of tea, and I ordered the "Unagi Seiro Mushi" (steamed eel in a bamboo basket) for 3,600 yen. After enjoying some tea for a while, the eel dish arrived in about 20 minutes. The chopstick wrapper had the imprint "Established since the Ansei era," which was during the reign of the Tokugawa shoguns Iemochi and Iesada. By the way, "Honkichiya" was established in the first year of Tenwa (1681), during the shogunate of Tsunayoshi. The steamed rice in the bamboo basket was cooked perfectly, with each grain of rice flavorful and fluffy, making it a delight to eat. The "Unagi Seiro Mushi" from Wakamatsuya had a strong sweetness to it, even in the tamagoyaki (rolled omelette). I personally found it a bit too sweet and left some of it uneaten. On the other hand, the one from Honkichiya was lighter in flavor. Being Kansai-style, the eel was grilled directly, with thick and fluffy meat. The sauce was different from the ones at eel restaurants in Kanto, as it had a thicker consistency. There was lemon in the liver dish, which I found to be a unique touch from Kyushu. The portion was generous, and I couldn't finish all the rice. However, the man at the next table ordered the extra-large "Unagi Seiro Mushi," which made me quite envious. Now, which eel restaurant would you choose?

Fukuoka homecoming part four is here. When visiting Yanagawa, you have to try eel! I visited a long-established store founded during the Ansei era, highly recommended by MyRebi. I got a ticket at 11:40 and had to wait for 9 groups ahead of me. Was this going to be a long wait? However, by 12 o'clock, I was guided to the main building in the back, and the food was served at 12:14. I didn't expect the place to be this big - the eel steamed in a basket and grilled eel were served, with 4 slices on top. The amount of rice was amazing. Even though I was full, my mother couldn't finish her grilled eel set, so she gave me one piece and was in bliss. The grilled eel had a strong flavor. The steamed eel had some flavor in the rice, so the seasoning of the eel was lighter. The eel steamed in a basket was under 4,000 yen, Fukuoka is really cheap. I'm happy to have finally eaten the eel steamed in a basket! How nice, Hakata food is...
