The first "Bib Gourmand" awarded Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurant, as featured in the 2013 Michelin Guide Hiroshima, has landed in Kyushu. Known as the soul food of Hiroshima, this okonomiyaki restaurant offers a mix of traditional and unique charms, with a distinctive round shape resembling an omelette. When I visited the shop in front of Hiroshima Station, there was quite a long line of tourists. The Canal City Hakata branch is also a popular spot, attracting many visitors. Despite not being a specialty of Hakata (laughs), there was still a line of locals. I waited about 20 minutes to enter the shop. I tried the interestingly named okonomiyaki dishes "Denkousekka" for 1,210 yen and "Yume" for 1,430 yen. The popular No. 1 menu item "Denkousekka" includes meat, double eggs, choice of soba or udon, squid tempura, shiso leaves, and green onions as toppings. "Yume" features meat, eggs, choice of soba or udon, squid tempura, squid, nori, green onions, and a sunny-side-up egg as toppings. I chose soba noodles for both. The thin, crepe-like dough is generously filled with vegetables, creating a cute, fluffy, round shape. Despite both being called "okonomiyaki," this dish has evolved differently from the hearty Fukuoka soul food "Fukuya" okonomiyaki. The noodles are perfectly cooked with a good balance of vegetables, resulting in a delicious harmony. The slightly sweet "Otafuku sauce" does a great job of enhancing the flavors. With other intriguing menu items like "Dance Number," "Be Kind to People," and "King of Lucky," I'm tempted to try them all. I'm starting to feel the ambition of conquering all the menu items.
