Located in Daizenji-cho, Kurume City, along the Hirokawa River in the Chikugo River system, this restaurant is known for its river fish dishes. They specialize in steamed eel and carp dishes, with their steamed eel being particularly delicious. The rice, soaked in flavorful sauce, is also a must-try. The special steamed eel dish costs 3,800 yen.
While in Fukuoka, we decided to visit Kurume to enjoy some eel. We originally planned to go to Tomimatsu in Araki, but ended up driving to the main branch in Kuroda. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere with spacious seating. They have partitions for COVID-19 measures, but that aside, it was a comfortable dining experience.
We ordered some chilled sake, the local Joushima's "Hanano Tsuyu." It had a good balance and a rich sweetness that complemented the vinegar miso with carp.
- Carp Sashimi (650 yen)
The carp had a vibrant color similar to golden snapper, with a firm texture. It had a light richness and a pleasant taste that paired well with soy sauce. The sensation of firmness on the ice continued, and the flavor changed nicely with the condiments.
- Steamed Eel (special) 3,800 yen
When the lid was lifted, steam rose gently. The steamed eel, except for the omelet, was colored brown. The eel was tender, cutting smoothly with chopsticks down to the skin. It had a substantial thickness, typical of the winter season, with the fat not completely drained even after steaming. The hot rice soaked in sauce and flavor was also delicious.
With a driver present, the total bill for three people was around 15,000 yen. It was a reasonably priced and enjoyable meal.
