Today, I went to renew my license and decided to walk from Ginza to Higashi-yonchome, an area I don't usually visit. On my way back, I planned to have the thickest tonkatsu bowl in Japan at "Marushichi" Fukagawa Fudomae branch in Monzen-nakacho. However, when I arrived at 4:30 PM on a Sunday, there were already about 20 people in line, and they announced that they had sold out for the day after serving two more orders. Luckily, the Tsukishima branch was still open, so I walked about 20 minutes to get there. Although there was a small line, I only had to wait a few minutes to be seated as it was also a popular spot. The restaurant had a counter with one seat and five tables for two. Today, they only had the grilled tonkatsu bowl (large) for 1800 yen available, with free extra rice if desired. The bowl arrived with miso soup with clams after about 15 minutes. The miso soup with trefoil had a gentle flavor. The 5cm thick tonkatsu was indeed impressive! It looked like it would go well with a cold beer, and luckily, a large bottle of Akahoshi beer was only 700 yen. The chilled glass and ice-cold beer were a delight in this season. Since the tonkatsu bowl did not have sauce on it, various condiments like ginger, sulfur salt, wasabi stem, shichimi, and soy sauce were provided on the table. The tonkatsu sauce had a slight sweetness and was not overly applied, but you could ask for more or less. My first impression of the dish was that the parts with a moderate amount of fat in the tonkatsu had a perfect balance of umami and sweetness, and it tasted best without any condiments. I personally enjoyed this seasoning very much! However, the parts with almost no fat in the middle lacked the meat's umami flavor, so I needed to use the salt and wasabi stem to adjust the taste. The egg omelet under the tonkatsu had a well-cooked texture and lacked flavor, which made it feel separate from the tonkatsu bowl. If it had been slightly more runny, it might have blended better with the dish. Overall, the Japan's thickest tonkatsu bowl for 1800 yen was satisfying!
