I was a bit nervous about being charged in dollars at the bar in Shinkoiwa, a place where non-regulars are not allowed to drink, but I was able to pay in Japanese yen. The owner, Wi, was very friendly, and when I requested "Let's Groove," he was delighted and played it. It's a fantastic funky bar. I heard they also have DJ events on weekends, so I'd love to go check it out.

They have regular events and salsa lessons on Wednesdays, attracting a lively crowd. The owner and servers behind the counter are mostly from various African countries. Chatting in English with them can also be a good practice for English conversation. The alcohol prices start from 700 yen for beers, which is a bit pricey, but there is no cover charge, so even just one drink is welcomed.
