The store is located across the road from Keihan Uji Station, as you can tell from the name of the store. Uji is a place rich in tourist resources, and in the past, it was also a base for hiking trips to places like the Tawara Dam. This store was often frequented by tourists who arrived via Keihan and hikers. However, as the times changed to the Heisei era, hiking became less popular, and now the majority of visitors are tourists, resulting in the opening of various other shops in the area. In the past, Surugaya was the only shop standing alone, with a narrow road and a somewhat rustic atmosphere. I visited today for the first time in a while, and it was nostalgic to see that the store's appearance has not changed in 40 years. I didn't think water moon cakes were that delicious in the past, but that might have been because I was a child. As an adult, I have had the opportunity to try various Japanese sweets, including water moon cakes, but I never really liked the heaviness of uirou and didn't usually buy them. However, I had memories of buying them in the past, so this time I bought tea dumplings and water moon cakes (matcha, white, and nikki) as souvenirs. I tried them as soon as I got home, and they were delicious! Unlike the typical heavy and sticky uirou, these had a slightly heavier texture like mochi, allowing me to enjoy the flavors of matcha, nikki, and white. I used to think that uirou always tasted the same no matter where you bought it, but I realized that this place is truly exceptional. Tea dumplings are also sold in other shops, but the ones here are soft and delicious, making them a highly recommended souvenir for Uji sightseeing. By the way, the tea dumplings were 110 yen each, and the water moon cakes were 210 yen each. It's also wallet-friendly.
