- Points I liked: Traditional affordability
- Points to note: May sell out by morning
- No parking available
- No specific rules
A shop selling grilled rice cakes located right in front of Kamigamo Shrine. The shop has a history of over 100 years. Well, in Kyoto, 100 years is just a rough estimate, right? You can buy just one grilled rice cake, making it perfect for eating on the go. Many people visit to make purchases for this reason. I visited in the morning, but apparently they often sell out by the afternoon, as some individuals buy dozens at a time. I decided to buy one. The grilled rice cake (150 yen) has a grilled surface and is filled with plenty of sweet bean paste. The paste is made with a modest level of sweetness and has a gentle flavor. It seems to be made using traditional methods and, of course, is additive-free. Delicious things really do rely on not adding unnecessary ingredients and maximizing the taste of the ingredients. The simplicity of the deliciousness that comes from eliminating all waste to the extreme. I wasn't even hungry, but I ended up eating it all in one go, and before I knew it, the grilled rice cake was gone. When I visited that day, luckily there was no one there, but as soon as I entered the shop, people started lining up behind me. In no time, there were about 10 people in line... A popular shop with a desperate queue. Whenever I pass by this area, I always want to buy this grilled rice cake.

"Kamadoko" is located in front of the World Heritage Site, Kamigamo Shrine. The grilled mochi has a perfect thickness that allows the sweet red bean paste to peek through just right. Each one is carefully handmade, grilled to perfection, resulting in a deliciously fragrant finish. The grilled parts are soft as well. They are about 6 cm in diameter and have a perfect sweetness to the red beans. You can hear the sound of making mochi from the back of the shop.

I headed north on my bicycle and arrived at Kamo Taisha around 11:40. Luckily, they weren't sold out yet. I had heard that they tend to sell out in the morning, so I was relieved. The price was 130 yen each, so I bought three for a total of 390 yen in cash. Since I hadn't had breakfast yet, I ate one outside in a shady spot. Wow, it was delicious. The outside was soft and the red bean paste inside was subtly sweet, but tasty. Now, I'm heading southeast. When I got home and tried the rest, they were still delicious and soft. I won't be able to make it to the 90th store for the Sweets WEST Hyakumeiten 2022 countdown, as I mentioned before.

On the fourth Sunday of every month, I came to the handmade market at Kamigamo Shrine, but there was a long line. I checked on Tabelog and found out it's one of the top 100 sweets shops, so I decided to wait in line. The mochi was being grilled when I got there, so I waited for a while. It cost 130 yen per piece, and I ate it on the spot. The mochi had a nice crispy texture with a slightly grilled surface. It stretched nicely when pulled. The sweet red bean paste didn't overpower the taste of the mochi, and it was delicious. The shop had a nice old-fashioned atmosphere.

There is space near the shop. The coin parking is quite far by car. The subway is far, so taking a city bus for a little trip seems like a safe option. If there are only 1-5 locals, you will be served quickly, but if there are many customers, you may have to wait for 20-30 minutes due to the balance of supply and demand. You often see a line of people waiting in the morning. Sometimes they sell out in the morning, so it's best to come early. The menu consists of only grilled rice cakes. You can watch the rice cakes being grilled on a hot plate, which adds to the excitement. Grilled Rice Cake (¥130) The packaging also adds to the excitement. However, the wrapping paper is just paper, so it's better to be careful with moisture and rice cakes. Now, the appearance is gently plump and inviting even before grilling. First of all, you will be surprised by how soft and fine the rice cakes are. And the taste will make you involuntarily exclaim, "Delicious!" The red bean paste is packed tightly with a subtly sweet seasoning, so there is a sense of satisfaction. Overall, it is light, so even women could probably eat 2-3 pieces. It's amazing that they have maintained this size, price, and quality for over 100 years. Eating this freshly grilled rice cake while looking at the greenery of Kamigamo Shrine is the best way to enjoy it. If you receive this as a souvenir, you will want to say, "It was really delicious! Thank you! Please tell me where the shop is!" Combo Plan How about comparing the experience of visiting Kamigamo Shrine and their events with enjoying grilled rice cakes at Imai Shokudo?

Kyoto Kitayama, Sweets West, a famous shop, Kamado-san. It is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop located right next to the Kamigamo Shrine. Their specialty yaki mochi was pre-ordered and picked up in the morning as they sell out quickly. The yaki mochi has a chewy texture and is delicious. It has a slightly fragrant and is perfect as a tea snack. I was truly delighted. Thank you for the meal.

The store is competing with the neighboring Aoiya and Yakimochi Sōhonpo for popularity. This place seems to have been established for over 150 years, but when you come to Kyoto, there is a kind of pointless competition with signs boasting about "established ◯ years" that is similar to bragging about not sleeping for only 2 hours. The distinct feature here is the straightforward style of focusing on just one specialty, Yakimochi. It's admirable that they have inherited their traditional style. It's convenient to call in advance as they can hold items for you. Since they are likely to close by noon due to their popularity, it's best to go in the morning starting from 7 am. Thank you for the delicious meal.

Today was a stay in Kyoto. Since it was Saturday, I decided not to work and explore Kyoto instead. I was thinking about where to go when suddenly it was already 10:30 am!!! I decided to head to Kamigamo Shrine. Well, to be precise, I headed to Kamado, a famous sweets shop in front of Kamigamo Shrine! When you think of Kamigamo, you think of Kamado! Established in 1872, over 150 years ago. Their specialty is "yakimochi," or officially known as "aoimochi." Their operating hours are from 7:00 am, and they close when they sell out. Last time I visited, it was already past 12:00 pm and they were closed. This time, I arrived before 11:30 am. I wondered if they still had any left... I nervously entered the shop. It was okay! I ordered three pieces. Each piece costs ¥130. In the light rain, while waiting for a taxi, I took a bite of one piece. It was already cold, but the mochi was fluffy and chewy. The roasted aroma was also strong! The sweet bean paste inside was perfectly sweet. It was delicious! No wonder they have been around for over 150 years. Thank you for the meal! I hope to visit again when I have the chance!

Sweet shop number 696 ♡ I had been curious about this place and finally got a chance to visit. It has been selected as one of the top 100 restaurants on Tabelog in 2022. When I entered the shop, they warmly greeted me, making me feel cozy. They only sell grilled rice cakes, so even if there is a line, you can quickly make a purchase. The shop was established in the Meiji era and has a charming atmosphere. I bought 3 grilled rice cakes for 130 yen and couldn't resist trying one immediately. It has a nice chewy texture but also fluffy. The surface is slightly grilled, giving off a faint aroma of burnt rice cake. The small bite-sized cakes have a light sweet filling, which is delicious. I also love the view of the Kamogawa River right in front of me. I definitely want to visit again. They only accept cash.

This is a shop located across from Kamigamo Shrine that only sells grilled rice cakes. I visited around 11:00 on a holiday. There were about 10 groups of customers ahead of me, and I waited for about 10 minutes to make a purchase. I bought the ◯ grilled rice cake for 130 yen. The grilled rice cake is freshly made, so the rice cake is extremely soft and stretches well. The surface is crispy and fragrant, while the inside has red bean paste. The red beans in the paste are just right, with a refined sweetness. The balance between the red bean paste and the rice cake is excellent and incredibly delicious. When I visited after praying at Kamigamo Shrine, the shop was already closed. If you want to make sure to buy some, I recommend going around 10:00.

When you visit Kyoto, you must buy the grilled mochi here! The sweet red bean paste and the mochi outside blend perfectly, and it's really delicious. It's especially amazing when it's freshly made, and you can enjoy it as is on the same day. The next day, you can toast it in a toaster for a different kind of deliciousness.

I often bought and ate at department stores, so I was curious and ended up coming to the main store. I was able to order just one item, so I decided to have one on the spot. I thought I would get something warm and freshly made, but it was just sitting there at room temperature waiting to be wrapped... haha But as expected from a famous store, it was delicious.

I regularly visit the area near Kamigamo Shrine, and each time I stop by either Jinbado or Aoi to buy souvenirs on my way back. As others have mentioned, they seem to close by the morning, and last time when I visited around 11:30, there were only two left. This time, I stopped by around 10:30 and there was a line, with some people ordering more than 20. Before, I used to eat the mochi after half a day or more, but this time I ate it about an hour and a half after buying it. The mochi was soft and moist, and the anko was different from before. It felt like I was eating something completely different. They call it "yakimochi" because they grill the surface of the mochi on an iron plate, but it's amazing that it doesn't become hard or crispy! However, because it's soft, despite being careful on the way back, it did get a bit misshapen. It didn't tear enough for the anko to come out, but the best way to eat it is probably while waiting for the bus back. It's said to be small, but as far as I know, it's the largest among Kyoto's grilled mochi, and at 130 yen, it's really affordable!

During my student days, I often used to enjoy the grilled mochi at the Kamigamo Shrine's Kamado Hall. It had been a while since I visited Kamigamo Shrine for some errands, so I decided to stop by. The grilled mochi was priced at 130 yen. Although it was not freshly grilled and was cold, the texture of the mochi was chewy compared to before. It was a small size and not too sweet, making it easy to eat on the go. This longstanding grilled mochi shop is so inviting that I can't help but want to stop by again when passing by.

I visited the restaurant early in the morning because I heard that their grilled rice cakes were delicious. Maybe because it was early in the morning or because of the pandemic, there weren't many customers and I was able to buy without waiting in line. The interior of the restaurant had a quaint old-fashioned atmosphere, with a large brazier and a cast iron kettle hanging over it, and furniture that exuded a sense of history. When I told them how many I wanted, they put the grilled rice cakes directly into a paper bag for me. Although they had just opened, the temperature was calm, so they must be selling them after letting them cool down a bit. The only other customer there arrived in a car around opening time. I had wanted to compare their grilled rice cakes with another nearby shop, but it was still too early for them to be open, so I had to give up. Even after sightseeing, there weren't many customers waiting, so I bought two more to enjoy on the Shinkansen ride back. The grilled rice cakes were quite small, with a chewy and crispy texture with a hint of browning. Inside was a moist and slightly sweet red bean paste. The smaller size means you can eat several if you like. I preferred the texture of the rice cakes and the red bean paste compared to another place I had tried in Kyoto before. It was still delicious even after some time had passed, but I bet it would have been even better if reheated! With its affordable price, size, and deliciousness, I thought it would make a perfect souvenir for someone you can give it to right away.

I went to Kamigamo Shrine and bought some grilled mochi at Kamadou-san. It's a famous shop for grilled mochi. I didn't eat the grilled mochi there, I took it to go. When I warmed it up at home, it tasted just like freshly made mochi. The chewy mochi and sweet red bean paste go really well together, it's very delicious. The grilled mochi was easy to eat.

Near the World Heritage Site Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto, there is a famous traditional Japanese confectionery shop called Yakimochi. It is located right across from the Aoiya Yakimochi Main Store that I visited before. It is a popular shop that often sells out in the morning, so it was difficult to find the right timing to buy. Finally, I was able to purchase Yakimochi for 130 yen each. These simple traditional Yakimochi need to be consumed on the same day as they do not last long. It may not be worth a special trip just to buy them, but it's a nice stop to make while visiting Kamigamo Shrine. Personally, I prefer the mugwort Yakimochi from Aoiya Yakimochi Main Store.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the renowned shop that specializes in "yakimochi". Located next to Kamigamo Shrine, many customers come to buy yakimochi while visiting the shrine. I myself purchased it during a visit to Kamigamo Shrine. The appearance of the yakimochi is very simple. According to reviews on Tabelog, many foodies highly praise it. I timidly took a bite and was greeted by a fragrant aroma that filled my nose. The mochi was just the right texture, not too soft or too firm. The gentle sweetness of the mochi and red bean paste spread in my mouth, with occasional hints of a toasty flavor. The deliciousness was so captivating that I unconsciously finished it, becoming one of the many fans of yakimochi.

Established in 1872, this long-standing shop specializes in selling grilled rice cakes. The name of the shop comes from its location next to the shrine gate of Kamigamo Shrine. They offer a dish called "Aoi Mochi," with "Aoi" symbolizing the shrine. The shop is conveniently located next to a bus parking lot, with additional parking available for regular cars. The grilled rice cakes, known as "yakimochi," come with sweet bean paste wrapped in a soft and chewy mochi. It is recommended to eat them as soon as possible as they tend to harden over time.
