I took a taxi from the hotel to Torimiya San in Kyoto, on Kiyamachi Street. As soon as I arrived, I took a photo of the exterior, and the staff offered to take a group photo for us. They guided us to a private room on the second floor, where they neatly folded our jackets for us. This was a first for me, what great hospitality! I was asked for a drink order, and I chose beer. I had already had a cocktail at the hotel lounge, so I only had a little bit. The beer arrived, and we made a toast. The appetizers were elegant and delicious. The chicken liver was especially tasty. The staff then prepared a hot pot for us, starting with a rich and creamy soup. It was collagen-rich and delicious. We also had bone-in chicken with vegetables like chrysanthemum leaves, all topped with grated radish. The chicken was delicious. They then brought us a mushroom dish and asked if we wanted an additional grilled dish, which we accepted. The staff members kept changing, serving us quail eggs in a cute bowl, mixing them with the hot pot soup, and offering us various ingredients to enjoy. We also had a delicious rice porridge. Despite being full, I couldn't resist the dessert, warabi mochi. The staff members rotated frequently, and the meal took about 2 and a half hours. It was a leisurely dining experience in a historic building. It was a memorable experience, and I'm glad I came here. The staff were attentive, even reminding us to be careful on the steep stairs. The modern restroom was also a nice touch. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Dashi roll - crispy texture. Zosui - incredibly delicious. Torinabe - made by the staff. Tori karaage - very tasty. Tori senbei - unique texture. Nasu dengaku - very delicious. The appearance of the restaurant is inviting, so I recommend dining inside. The narrow staircase and hallway add to the traditional atmosphere. PS: I think ordering just the hot pot is enough.

I brought a guest from overseas for their first visit. I used to enjoy the taste and atmosphere of the original Torihatsu in Kyoto for hot pot, so I have visited there several times. However, this time I decided to make a reservation here because I thought the table seating would be better. When we were seated, to my surprise, we were given a riverside seat! The weather was nice that day, with pleasant sunshine and a beautiful sunset view. It was my first experience dining by the riverside, and my guest from overseas was also delighted! As for the food, the hot pot was undeniably delicious, but it didn't quite leave me as impressed as when I visited Torihatsu. Perhaps it's because I have had hot pot many times before. We ordered Nishijin sake, which came with a genuine Nishijin woven handkerchief, perfect for our foreign guest! We also added the famous Tori Senbei as an extra order, which was visually appealing with its crispy chicken skin, but the taste was just average. The open feeling of dining by the riverside was very pleasant, and the atmosphere after the sunset was also great. Being able to enjoy delicious hot pot while overlooking the Kamo River makes this place highly recommended! The service by the waitstaff was very polite and pleasant. Of course, they take care of everything for the hot pot, so you don't need to do anything! While the private rooms at the original Torihatsu are nice, dining by the riverside is also great! I think I will choose the restaurant based on the season from now on. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

The soup in the sukiyaki was very rich, and as I was eating, my lips started to feel sticky, possibly due to the collagen. The individual dishes were also generous in portion size, so if you order too much, you might not make it to the sukiyaki course at the end. Everything was delicious. The staff were all friendly and the atmosphere had a traditional feel.

A riverside restaurant with a view of the Kamo River, where you can leisurely enjoy chicken hot pot while being served by waitresses in kimonos. The liver that comes out first was really delicious. It was my first time eating chicken hot pot at a restaurant, but I wasn't that impressed.

I was overwhelmed by the atmosphere and food at this traditional Japanese restaurant, to the point where I questioned if I belonged there. The building where I had my meal was over 250 years old, dating back to the Edo period. It seemed to have been expanded over time, with the section beyond the inner courtyard (facing the river) being around 200 years old. I had the sukiyaki, which is said to have been loved by Ryoma Sakamoto! The broth was rich and flavorful, starting with a soup made of broth and quail egg, followed by vegetables, chicken, and finally a porridge. I couldn't resist ordering the side dishes like fried chicken and shiitake mushroom tempura, and the warabi mochi dessert was deliciously soft and chewy. I was initially overwhelmed when I entered the restaurant, feeling like I had made a mistake, but it turned out to be a memorable experience. If I have the chance, I would love to visit again!

I had Kyoto's Mizutaki (chicken hot pot) for the first time. The soup, simmered for three days, was made from chicken and was cloudy, but it was delicious on its own without any added ingredients. The next day, my skin was smooth and glowing. The service was excellent, and the restaurant itself was a beautiful traditional Kyoto building, making it a very pleasant dining experience.

I've always wanted to visit Torimiya-san's Kawadoko. The lovely atmosphere of the restaurant and the fact that you can enjoy the sukiyaki that Ryoma also ate made me excited even before going there. I made a reservation about 10 days in advance. I added the famous chicken skin senbei to the sukiyaki course. For the appetizer, you can choose between chicken liver or tofu, and since I'm not a fan of liver, I ordered the tofu. It had a subtle sweetness and was delicious! The chicken soup alone was so rich that you could eat it with rice. Of course, the chicken itself was tender and tasty. The porridge at the end had a concentrated umami flavor that was very satisfying. The chicken skin senbei, being a specialty, was perfect. It had a strong flavor that went well with beer or sake. Overall, the portion size wasn't too large, but maybe because I was eating slowly, by the time I reached the warabi mochi at the end, I was already so full that I couldn't move. Compared to other restaurants with a riverside terrace, Kawadoko has a unique atmosphere, and with chairs, it's easier for older people to visit. With only 7-8 tables in total, you can enjoy a leisurely meal and have a wonderful time. I feel like the score could be a bit higher considering the taste and atmosphere, but taking into account the cost performance, I settled on this score.

Kyoto's seasonal tradition, the riverside dining season has arrived. Water hot pot is a perfect choice for a night that is not too cold and comfortable. When making a reservation, I requested a seat by the river, and they kindly guided us to a table along the river. There was no paper menu, and the server explained the menu verbally. While we ordered the water hot pot course, it seems common to also order a la carte dishes. The server explained about 10 menu items verbally, and although I couldn't remember all of them, we decided to try the sweetfish tempura, chicken karaage, and grilled shiitake mushrooms. Meanwhile, the pot was placed on the fire, and the milky soup started to simmer as the server prepared the hot pot for us. They served us each portion from the pot, so we could simply enjoy the meal. We even had a delicious porridge at the end, and we were completely satisfied. The dishes served on the floor matched the atmosphere perfectly and were incredibly tasty.

This is a restaurant located a little south of Kawaramachi Station in Kyoto. It was recommended by my wife, and we made a reservation right away. The restaurant has a historical feel, with a great atmosphere. We arrived a little before our 7 pm reservation, and were seated on the floor for the first time, which was a unique experience. The menu only had one option - a sukiyaki course. We started with a toast and ordered some beer. There were also additional dishes available, and we decided to try the boiled conger eel and chicken skin senbei. The meal started with appetizers and liver stew, which were all delicious. The sukiyaki was flavorful and the soup was rich. We also enjoyed the conger eel and chicken skin, which were both tasty. The meal ended with a delicious porridge and warabi mochi. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience and we would love to visit again.

I first visited this restaurant 5-6 years ago and I couldn't forget the taste, so I made a reservation now that the situation with Corona has calmed down a bit. My husband and I decided to have a luxurious dinner in Kyoto, as we usually have simple meals. We ordered a course meal, chicken skin senbei, highball, and mineral water. During the meal, a large mushroom was brought to our table, but we didn't order it as we were already getting full. It's a high-class restaurant, so there was no menu, but the milky white hot pot and the subsequent rice porridge were so delicious that we couldn't forget the taste. Every bite was satisfying and we definitely want to come back to this restaurant.

I couldn't make a reservation a few times, so it's been a few years since my last visit. By chance, I was guided to the same room as last time, but it had been turned into a table seat, which was a little disappointing for someone born in the Showa era. I ordered the hot pot course, fried chicken, rolled omelette, and the shiitake mushroom tempura recommended by the waitress. I enjoyed my favorite sake. The soup we had at the beginning was delicious and made all my daily fatigue disappear! All I had to do was drink and eat as the staff served the dishes one by one. It was a blissful moment. For my second drink, I had white wine. Since it was a warm day, the staff opened the window for us to enjoy the view. I finished the porridge beautifully. For dessert, I chose homemade warabi mochi or persimmon, and I chose persimmon. It was sweet and delicious. I love this restaurant so much that I want to come every month. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

After working on tangible cultural properties over 230 years old and intangible cultural properties in Bali, this was the first time I tried sukiyaki. The broth for both the beef and pork here is unlike any other. I won't say much about it. I am grateful to the chicken from the bottom of my heart in this wonderful historic space. I am grateful to the chicken from the inside of my body. Good things require human hands, time, and effort, so they inevitably become expensive. I hope that the idea that good things are expensive will continue to be valued. - Rei Kawakubo (COMME des GARCONS designer)

Established over 200 years ago, this long-standing chicken cuisine restaurant is so renowned that its store is designated as a registered tangible cultural property. It is known for being visited by Sakamoto Ryoma for its sukiyaki, and even taxi drivers are familiar with the name of this famous establishment. Located just a 2-3 minute walk south from Shijo-dori on Kiyamachi-dori, it has received one Michelin star and a high rating of 3.73 on Tabelog (as of October 27, 2021). We opted for the sukiyaki course (¥13,000) with additional items like matsutake mushrooms (¥4,300) and grilled chicken thigh (¥2,200?). We also ordered two oolong teas (¥550 each). The total bill came to just under ¥20,000. We enjoyed our meal feeling the pleasant breeze by the riverside. Depending on the season, it might get quite sweaty dining in this setting. The meal started with an appetizer (yuba, candied sweet potatoes, edamame, toko bushi, nagaimo, and conger eel nanban-zuke) followed by chicken liver stew and grilled chicken thigh (salt/ichimi/red wine sauce). The sukiyaki (with chicken leg meat, breast meat, chrysanthemum greens, Chinese cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, tofu, yuba, and grilled rice cakes) was a full-service experience, where you just have to sit and wait for the ingredients to be cooked in the luxurious chicken bone broth. The broth was rich and collagenous, with a recommended initial soup of quail eggs mixed with the sukiyaki broth and seasoned with salt. The flavors of the ingredients layered beautifully in the soup, and the yuba soaked in the broth was particularly delicious. The grilled chicken and additional grilled chicken thigh (including heart) were also excellent. The egg used in the porridge at the end was tasty as well. The matsutake mushrooms (from China) could be prepared as grilled or tempura, but we decided to add them to the sukiyaki. Although it may not be necessary to use domestic matsutake for this dish, adding them provided a unique touch. The service was impeccable, starting with a three-fingered greeting and a dedicated attendant even for solo diners. It's important to note that the prices for additional items may not be clearly indicated, so guests may be surprised by the final bill. It's recommended to confirm the prices with the attendant or communicate your budget during the reservation.

Today's dinner in Kyoto was at Torimisa, a historic building dating back to the Edo period designated as a registered tangible cultural property. We went to try their famous dish - Mizutaki (chicken hot pot). We had reserved a seat at the traditional Noryo Yuka along the Kamo River, but due to rain, we were seated in a private room with a view of the river and the platform through a glass window. Despite not being on the actual platform, we could still appreciate the atmosphere and history of over 230 years. The white, collagen-rich soup made by simmering chicken bones for three days was unlike anything I've tasted before. The chicken liver had no unpleasant smell and was incredibly delicious, and the bone-in chicken thigh and breast were so tender and flavorful. The combination of the historic building and the Mizutaki dish at Torimisa, which has been passed down for over two centuries, was truly remarkable. The total cost for two people was 49,500 yen. The menu included Mizutaki, appetizers, matsutake mushrooms, chicken crackers, fried chicken, and more.

According to the female owner, this restaurant has been a long-established business for 270 years. The building itself has been gradually expanded over the years to its current state. The floor overlooking the Kamogawa River seems to be a recent addition, adding a touch of modernity. The indirect lighting and other details make it feel more upscale compared to the izakaya next door. The cozy atmosphere is perfect for enjoying the delicious Mizutaki hot pot, which is simply exquisite. The staff takes care of everything, ensuring the ingredients are cooked just right. The rich chicken broth is incredibly tasty, from the complimentary soup to the final zosui dish. The restaurant wasn't crowded that day, so the staff even came out to warmly see us off. I highly recommend this place when visiting Kyoto.

I used it for the first time on a special day. I had never eaten sukiyaki outside before, but the high-quality sukiyaki was exquisite. I also had wild vegetable tempura, which was very delicious. From the appetizers to the main course, and even the warabi mochi dessert, I had the best anniversary celebration. The beautiful view of the Kamo River and cherry blossoms outside the window added color to the experience. I would love to come back again. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

There are several restaurants that I have always wanted to visit, and one of them was Torimiso. My wife seemed to remember this and surprised me by bringing me here without telling me where we were going. It was probably the first time she had planned such a surprise, considering that I tend to be difficult to surprise (sorry). The menu offers a kaiseki lunch, but the highlight here is the chicken sukiyaki. Before the meal, we had plum wine (served on coasters with bird and animal caricatures) and the chopsticks were pretty cool. There was a lot of ice in the drink, making it light like plum juice. The first course included a variety of seasonal dishes such as liver and tofu. The next dish was a choice between special liver stew or tofu liver stew, both of which were delicious. The hot pot was set up, resembling the white broth of Hakata's chicken sukiyaki. The vegetables included shiitake mushrooms, yuba, tofu, mochi, kikuna, and cabbage. The soup was poured into the individual bowls with quail eggs and seasoned with salt. The chicken meat had a good texture and the quail eggs added a unique touch. A second serving was recommended, and we enjoyed the rich flavors with the option to adjust the seasoning ourselves. The chicken skin yakitori was crispy and flavorful, cooked in chicken fat. We also had a variety of vegetables and mochi, which were all delicious. The meal ended with a comforting rice porridge and homemade warabi mochi with black honey. Overall, dining at Torimiso felt like experiencing a piece of Japanese history through the building, flavors, and ambiance.

During my trip to Kyoto, I felt like having Mizutaki, so I searched and found a restaurant with a 200-year history. I made a reservation and enjoyed a leisurely meal in a traditional Kyoto-style private room overlooking the Kamo River. It was child-friendly too. I ordered a course menu and also added some a la carte dishes, which turned out to be just right. The appetizer had a taste of Kyoto cuisine, and I especially loved the rich Kyoto-style tofu. The soup, simmered for three days, was incredibly delicious. Being a restaurant with 200 years of history, the flavors were truly exceptional. They were very considerate in preparing a separate dish for my son who has an egg allergy, so he could enjoy the meal as well. The hot pot was so delicious that we finished every drop of the soup. The chicken meat was tender and even the skin was tasty. I love grilled chicken skin, so I ordered it as an extra dish, and it was generously sized with perfect seasoning. As I adore fugu shirako, I also added an extra order of it, which was satisfyingly large. The dessert, warabi mochi, was also delicious and disappeared in no time.
