特盛ヒロシ
Tonsho, located on the 13th floor of Shinjuku Takashimaya, is a tonkatsu restaurant. It is a branch of the large tonkatsu chain "Wako" and there is only one of its kind in the whole country. This was my second visit, and I was excited to try their food again. Arriving around 6:30 pm on a Saturday, the restaurant was packed with long lines at every table. I was seated at a slightly spacious table for two. I decided to order the recommended Kagoshima Rokkaku Kurobuta thick-cut loin tonkatsu set meal (2,916 yen tax included). The cabbage salad that came first was served separately, which was a nice touch. However, the taste was not impressive, lacking sweetness and having a slight bitterness. The texture was also not great, similar to eating coleslaw. The thick-cut Rokkaku Kurobuta tonkatsu arrived after a 15-minute wait. Visually, it looked slightly burnt, and the presentation of the tonjiru soup was not appealing. The tonkatsu slices varied in quality, with the right end being delicious and melting in the mouth, but the breading was too coarse and interfered with the meat's flavor. The middle to left end was overcooked, dry, and disappointing. The tonjiru soup, on the other hand, was tasty with good ingredients, but the presentation was lacking. The price of around 3,000 yen is a bit high, especially considering the availability of tastier tonkatsu options out there. Despite some shortcomings, I appreciate the free refills of rice, cabbage, and tonjiru soup, which is a unique feature of chain restaurants. While the overall experience was not perfect, I may consider returning to try other items on the menu. Thank you for the meal, and I look forward to visiting again.
