"If you go to Kyoto, be sure to visit Kagi Zenzai Yoshifusa." Following this recommendation, I hurriedly visited the place just before closing time after researching its location. Located on Shijo Street, which already has a charming atmosphere, this place exudes a special aura. It truly feels like a longstanding establishment. My friend and I ordered the "Kuzukiri" with black honey and white syrup. First, we were served tea and a traditional sweet. The tea was promptly refilled once it was finished, showcasing the excellent service of a longstanding establishment. The "Kuzukiri" was presented in a unique container - the top layer contained syrup, while the bottom layer had the kuzukiri noodles immersed in ice water. It was a fantastic presentation. We enjoyed the slippery texture of the kuzukiri soaked in syrup, reminiscent of eating zaru soba. It was delicious! The combination of the chilled slippery noodles and the elegant syrup was truly exquisite. The black honey and white syrup were both exceptional, and it's hard to choose a favorite. This place is truly outstanding. I had no idea what to expect when I came here, but I was pleasantly surprised. I looked it up immediately and found out more about Kagi Zenzai Yoshifusa. The establishment was founded during the Edo period, in the early 1700s. It has been making traditional Kyoto sweets in a corner of the Gion district for over 300 years. The official website mentions that the exact founding date is unknown, but there is a lacquered box with a mother-of-pearl design from the 11th year of the Enjoyment era (1726), indicating that the confectionery shop was already in operation during that time. The oldest document found dates back to the 3rd year of the Genroku era (1690s), mentioning an establishment with the name "Kagi Zenzai" located on the corner of Nawa-cho and Shijo Street. With 15 generations of the same family as the current owners, the establishment's history dates back even further. The price of 1400 yen may seem high, but the ambiance, service, and taste are all of exceptional quality. This is an experience that everyone should try at least once."

I went there over the weekend. The chilled texture was refreshing and smooth, very enjoyable. I chose the black honey flavor. I also ordered the matcha flavor, which I drank happily. It was a hidden gem to escape the heat. We were seated promptly and everything from start to finish was satisfying.

Founded in the Edo period and still in operation today, this longstanding traditional Japanese confectionery shop is famous for its "kuzukiri" dessert. Kuzukiri is the epitome of simplicity, with a chewy texture and smooth mouthfeel. It is said that careful selection of ingredients and the craftsmanship of the artisans are crucial. I had the pleasure of tasting it in the café area. When you remove the lid of the green cylindrical container, you can choose between a black or white honey layer. Underneath the honey layer is the kuzukiri immersed in ice. Due to its subtle flavor, the honey plays a crucial role in determining the deliciousness. When you bite into the kuzukiri soaked in honey, the taste of the honey and the chewy texture quickly pass through your throat, leaving you in awe. Beyond the taste, it is truly a moving experience. The enduring popularity of this elegant and pure deliciousness can be attributed to its connection to Japanese beauty, as well as its favoritism in places like Gion and Nanzan Theater. The soft lighting covering the ceiling, cozy seating, and a view of the courtyard from the back window allowed me to enjoy the traditional Japanese experience along with the taste. This is a must-visit place when touring Kyoto.

When you come to Kyoto, you must order traditional sweets and the famous kuzukiri noodles - they were reliably delicious! The kuzukiri portion was quite large even for one person, and the sweet black syrup made it quite filling. I couldn't finish it all, so I had my mother help me. The traditional sweets had an elegant taste, but overall were on the sweeter side. I personally would have liked them a bit less sweet. The warabimochi looked delicious, and all the other traditional sweets looked tempting as well. I recommend getting a numbered ticket and exploring the area while waiting in line. If I have the opportunity to visit Kyoto again, I will definitely go back! Thank you for the meal!

As expected of a famous restaurant in Gion. Both the nerikiri and kuzu-cut sweets were top-notch, and I can only describe them as delicious! Honestly, I had a hard time choosing between the kuzu-cut and warabi mochi, but because it was hot, I went with the kuzu-cut. Next time, I'm thinking of trying the warabi mochi! The tea served as a regular service was also amazing, as expected of Gion, and I ended up having about 3 cups (partly because Kyoto's summer was too hot and I was really thirsty...). The atmosphere, taste, everything was excellent.

This shop is famous for its kuzukiri. When I visited right after opening, there was almost no wait to get in. I decided to try the kuzukiri with black honey and white honey. It was my first time trying kuzukiri, so I was looking forward to it. After about 5 minutes, it arrived. I realized that kuzukiri doesn't have much flavor, but it was easy to eat without any off-tastes. It tasted delicious when dipped in honey. However, I felt like the portion was a bit too much. Overall, it was a good meal.

I visited the store on Saturday afternoon and got a take-out of their kusa mochi. Although there were seats available inside, there were many people waiting, so I decided to get it to go. The kusa mochi had a nice weight to it, and the chewy texture with plenty of kinako was delicious. It was so good that I want to buy more next time.

I made a new discovery with the kuzukiri! Kuzukiri served chilled with ice is smooth and delicious ✨ It provides excellent stability!! It really hits the spot on hot days ♡ I had it with black honey, but next time I would like to try it with white honey! The room was very spacious and I could relax comfortably ☺️

Visited to seek coolness in the scorching heat of Kyoto. Tried the shaved ice dessert called "kuzukiri". The inside of the shop was cool, and I quickly felt refreshed. Then came the super cold kuzukiri, served in a lovely bowl with big, beautiful chunks of ice. I enjoyed it with black honey. It felt like a lot for me, but it was really delicious.

The interior of the shop was elegant and very lovely. It was a Saturday, but it was not crowded, probably because it was lunchtime. However, by the time we left, there were people waiting. I tried the smooth and cold kuzukiri with both black honey and white honey. It had a refined sweetness, perfect for Kyoto's hot and humid summer.

Located about a 5-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Railway Kyoto Line in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, you can enjoy Kyoto confectionery at the dessert shop "Kagi Zenryoubou Shijo Main Store." Visited on September 1, 2023. This shop is one of the top 100 confectionery shops in the 2023 WEST Confectionery Division! The variety of top 100 shops keeps increasing, right? This is a renowned Kyoto sweets shop that has been consistently selected as a top 100 shop for sweets. I ordered the "Kuzukiri" for 1400 yen. This might be my first time trying Kuzukiri, which seems quite challenging and high-class. The luxury is off the charts, truly the epitome of indulgence! I chose the popular black honey for the syrup... The dish itself exudes luxury! It looks so cool and elegant. The Kuzukiri is very delicious. It's incredibly refined sweetness, truly representing Kyoto. The shiny and beautiful Kuzukiri makes you involuntarily exclaim "wow." Dip it in the black honey, and it's a delightful experience. The smooth and silky texture, along with the perfect elasticity, combined with the elegant sweetness of the black honey, creates a sophisticated sweetness that spreads in your mouth. It's delicious. The Kuzukiri, chilled and crispy in the ice, is a luxurious treat, especially during the scorching summer. It may not appeal to everyone due to the price, but it's a dessert you'll want to try at least once for the experience. Bon appétit!

"Kanesenryo Sohonten" located along Shijo Street in Kyoto is highly acclaimed as one of the top 100 sweets shops for four consecutive terms! Their seasonal wagashi, including beautifully crafted fresh sweets, are of excellent quality and truly wonderful. In addition to takeout options, they also have a cozy tea room where you can relax and enjoy your treats. I visited on a weekday afternoon and was surprised to see many customers seeking out their wagashi, even though it was not mealtime yet. The place quickly filled up, but I was able to find a seat and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere despite the growing crowd. I decided to try their "Autumn Melody" fresh sweet, which was a delightful treat with a refined black bean paste filling. The complimentary cold tea was light and refreshing, while the sugar candy, possibly made with wasanbon sugar, melted elegantly in my mouth. The "Autumn Melody" sweet had a perfect balance of sweetness and the subtle flavor of the red bean paste, showcasing the sophistication of Kyoto wagashi. Overall, Kanesenryo Sohonten truly lives up to its reputation as one of the best wagashi shops in Kyoto, offering not only delicious treats but also exceptional service. The convenient location on Shijo Street makes it a must-visit spot for Kyoto sightseeing. I highly recommend stopping by this wonderful wagashi shop when you are in Kyoto. I walked around and got tired, so I took a break and sought some sweets at a long-established shop with a serene atmosphere and attentive service. I was able to relax easily even though I visited on a weekday at 3 pm. The signature menu seemed to be kuzu-cut, but this time I chose warabi mochi, which was delicious with just the right amount of sweetness.

The atmosphere of the shop is amazing. Towards the back of the retail space, there is a cafe. You can see the garden shed. I ordered kuzukiri with black honey. There is an essay about kuzukiri on the menu. Please read it while waiting for your kuzukiri. It will change the way you taste it. Kuzukiri is the taste of the earth. It was a great restaurant.

Beautiful interior of the shop. First, the service at Rakugan. Simple menu. Surprisingly large portions of Kuzukiri in big bowls. The warabi mochi is also cut into large pieces and comes with black honey. It wasn't crowded in the shop on a weekday evening, so I was able to go in. A place you'll want to visit at least once.

After exploring Yasaka Shrine, I visited this place. Maybe you've never tried kuzukiri before. It has a delightful chewy and bouncy texture. I chose the recommended black honey as a topping, and it was just the right amount of sweetness, not too overpowering as I had imagined.

Located right in the middle of Gion Shijo is the traditional Japanese confectionery shop "Kanzenryo". This shop is famous for its Kuzu Mochi for dining in, attracting many customers. Although I wanted to dine in, this time I opted for takeout of their wagashi (Japanese sweets). ⭐️Kikyo (Chinese bellflower)⭐️Iwashimizu⭐️Mizubotan⭐️Kikyo Summer Wagashi are often associated with Kikyo, and the blue Kikyo here is quite renowned. The vibrant yet calming blue color is truly a masterpiece by the artisans. As for the taste... The lightly sweet blue mochi with a firm white bean paste inside is delicious! The mochi is delightfully chewy. ⭐️Iwashimizu This one also features a vibrant light green color. Is this made of agar? Inside, there is white bean paste and red beans, creating a wonderful combination. ⭐️Mizubotan This one is a charming peach-colored wagashi. The peach-colored bean paste is wrapped in a white dress-like pouch, representing a flower. The glossy color is lovely. Next, I will try their Kuzu Mochi.

A famous sweet shop called Kuzukiri, which combines history and elegance. At first, I was surprised by the price of 1400 yen for Kuzukiri, but decided to give it a try. The interior of the shop was pleasantly cool, with a beautiful traditional Kyoto-style garden to admire. The atmosphere allowed me to feel the history while enjoying my meal. We were served with a starter of refined Japanese sugar, followed by the Kuzukiri itself. When it arrived, I was surprised to see it served in a traditional stacked box. Underneath the lid was black sugar syrup, with the Kuzukiri soaking in ice water. The Kuzukiri could be dipped in either black or white sugar, but most customers seemed to prefer black sugar. When I tasted it, it was ordinary, but somehow it felt elegant. Perhaps it was the ambiance, the temperature inside the shop, or the timing that made the experience special. The taste of the Kuzukiri alone cannot be evaluated. Additionally, if your barley tea runs low, the staff will quickly refill it without you having to ask. The service was truly top-notch.

I visited "Kagi Zenryoubou Shijo Honten" located in Gion Shopping Street. They have been awarded "Tabelog Sweets WEST Top 100 Stores" for 5 consecutive years. Kagi Zen is so famous for sweets in Gion! It was a long-awaited visit for me. I was prepared for a 1-hour wait during sweets time, but surprisingly there was no wait! And there were empty seats available. What luck! Finally, I can try the legendary Kuzukiri! The one I had this time was Kuzukiri (black honey). It was incredibly transparent. When I tried it... it had a chewy texture. It was quite different from the Kuzukiri I had before. The black honey was not too strong, so it was delicious! However, as I continued eating, I started to get tired... The expiration date was too short, and after 10 minutes, it started to have a slightly grainy texture. Also, the portion was unexpectedly large, about twice as much as I imagined. I managed to finish it, but honestly, I would respect anyone who could enjoy it until the end... it was too much for me. I bought some sweets on the way back. I might add more later? Depending on that, my evaluation might change. There is also Kuzukiri with white honey, so if I have the chance, I might try that too. Thank you for the meal.

On August 5, 2023, Kyoto day trip Part 3. One of the purposes of this day trip was to enjoy sweets in Kyoto. We visited Kuzukiri at Kagiya Yoshinoya in Gion, Kyoto. It had been about 12 years since I last had Kuzukiri here, and probably about 20 years for my wife. Our daughters requested to try it, so we arrived before the opening to secure a good spot by the window. I ordered Kuzukiri with white honey, while my wife and daughters chose black honey. While waiting, we were served cold tea and the popular dried sweets, Kikujuto. The Kuzukiri made with Yoshino kudzu had a smooth texture and chewy consistency, with a special focus on the honey which was incredibly delicious. The price of Kuzukiri had doubled since my last visit, but seeing my daughters enjoying it with big smiles made me feel happy to have brought them here. I also enjoyed both the white honey and black honey Kuzukiri, feeling satisfied. I am looking forward to the dried sweets we bought as souvenirs.
