The food was delicious and had great value for money. I thought it would be hard to get a seat, but it wasn't at all! It's not just for regulars. The retro interior, nostalgic BGM, and cozy atmosphere were all great. The katsudon looked delicious, and the sandwiches at the cafe were tasty. It's important to visit cafes once in a while.

On August 6, 2022, after having lunch, I had my usual break time. I searched nearby and found a shop across the street. I checked if smoking was allowed, and they said it was okay except during lunchtime. It was 2:30 PM, so I double-checked and it was still okay. The shop called "Life" had three elderly regulars and one other customer. It had a very traditional coffee shop vibe. I ordered an iced coffee for 550 yen, a bit pricey for this neighborhood but necessary for a relaxing break after lunch. The owner even gave me some complimentary snacks, which you wouldn't expect at a chain coffee shop. It was a nice touch and made me happy. Thank you for the meal.

Located at the Negishi-Kozenma intersection, the longstanding café "Life" was finally visited by the reviewer. The small interior was run by two women. After lunchtime, they decided to order a sandwich on toast. The sandwich was made with four thick slices of bread and was very filling and delicious. They also enjoyed a side dish after the meal. The reviewer confirmed that the café had a nice atmosphere and was a relaxing place to dine.

On January 26, 2018 (Friday), there are cultural heritage-like remnants of the Showa era in Uguisudani, and this "Life" is exactly that, with aged signs and a distinctly retro coffee shop entrance that is strangely attractive. The interior of the shop is quite spacious with a decent depth. The lunch menu consists of Napolitan and toast dishes. Unlike modern cafes, there is no extensive food menu or sweets, which gives it a more old-fashioned feel. The blend coffee is priced at around 500 yen, slightly on the higher side, but understandable for a small independent shop. Nuts are provided along with the coffee. The mama-san and regular customers engage in lively conversations, and although it is a coffee shop, it may have a strong snack bar vibe. Surprisingly, one after another, regular customers come in and everyone gets along well, chatting happily. Honestly, at first glance, the atmosphere of the regular customers may seem a bit intimidating, but perhaps this shop is the very essence of the lives of the people living in Uguisudani. The coffee itself has a strong acidity but is not bad. The mama-san, though it may be part of her job, warmly welcomed even someone like me who may seem out of place. I love the song "The Name of the Store is Life" by Miyuki Nakajima, and this restaurant perfectly matches the image of that song. The shop has been in business for 61 years, and the owner has a great aura and interesting stories to share. They also take good care of new customers. The coffee is delicious, but the best thing about this place is the wonderful atmosphere. The lighting inside is just right and it's so comfortable that you might get addicted to it. I feel like staying there all day (laughs). For people who enjoy this kind of atmosphere, this place is the best restaurant, don't you think?

I visited this place for breakfast 2-3 times. They serve simple breakfast with buttered toast, coffee, and boiled egg, which tasted quite good. The price was reasonable and the box seats with sofas were comfortable. However, the atmosphere was a bit overwhelming with regular customers chatting loudly and discussing inappropriate topics like ink and shaving pubic hair. It made me feel uncomfortable while eating. It seems like this place caters mainly to regular customers, so I don't think it's appropriate to complain. I decided to leave quickly. Maybe it would be better to visit during less crowded times, but after my experience, I don't plan on returning.

In the past, when Ueno was still a bustling district and before Uguisudani was taken over by tacky hotels, there was a jazz cafe where the self-proclaimed "Sun Tribe" gathered. Now, it mainly attracts locals for lunch and retirees who used to be regulars. They serve salad udon, which is warm and gentle on the stomach, with a special sauce that makes it delicious. You can also add mustard sauce, nam pla dressing, or mayonnaise to your liking. The atmosphere remains authentic with five counter seats, three tables for four, and two tables for two. The beautiful owner, who has been there for two generations, is still there, maintaining the charm. Smoking is allowed, and the lovely mama is an art enthusiast who even travels to Nice to see Chagall's work. After visiting art galleries, be sure to stop by this place.
