Tonkatsu Yamamoto. I treated myself to a meal here after finishing a big job. I made a reservation just in case and arrived 5 minutes before opening, being the first customer. As I passed through the gate curtain and approached the entrance, I was impressed by the restaurant-like atmosphere inside. I sat at the counter where I could see the cooking process and ordered the following: - Rosukatsu set meal @2090 yen - Bottle of beer (medium size/Kirin Lager) @770 yen The interior of the restaurant was very quiet, with the sound of tonkatsu being fried in the background. While sipping on the beer and enjoying the complimentary chicken liver simmered dish, I waited for my tonkatsu. It arrived in just over 10 minutes. The breading was thin and fine, not rare but perfectly fried to maintain the tenderness of the pork and the crispiness of the breadcrumbs. Although it was loin, it wasn't too fatty, and when eaten without any sauce, it revealed the elegant flavor of the meat and a hint of the subtle seasoning of pepper. It felt like I was not just savoring the deliciousness of the meat itself, but also appreciating the craftsmanship of the chef, as the signboard suggested, truly receiving the "technique" of tonkatsu. The fruity sauce was also delicious. The cabbage, cut in large pieces rather than shredded, was an unusual side for tonkatsu, and I enjoyed dipping it in the sauce almost like eating kushikatsu. The rice was cooked to my liking, with the perfect firmness. The miso soup contained pork, konjac, burdock, daikon, and carrot, with a hint of spice enhancing the rich flavor. In addition to that, there was radish salad and pickled vegetables, but I didn't enjoy the taste of the pickled vegetables. Despite being a popular spot, there were only 3 other customers besides me that day. In the quiet and pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant, I was able to leisurely savor my tonkatsu, enjoying a luxurious dining experience.

I visited a renowned tonkatsu restaurant that is registered in the top 100 tonkatsu restaurants. I ordered the hire katsu. The master, who has been in business for 55 years, carefully fries the tonkatsu in a large pot. When it arrived, the tonkatsu had a nostalgic appearance. The thin coating had a crispy texture, and when topped with plenty of sauce, it was delicious. It may not have been made with the trendy brand pork, but it had a nostalgic taste. The tonjiru (pork miso soup) sprinkled with sansho pepper was rich and flavorful. The master's wife took care of us in a friendly manner. I wonder if there will be a successor... Despite being run by the veteran master, I hope they stay healthy for a long time.

Around 11:20, I asked a friendly security guard nearby for directions, and found the place. It was still closed, but the staff were putting up the curtain. I checked out a nearby traditional Japanese sweets shop, but decided to have lunch first. I asked the security guard again, entered through the left entrance at around 11:25, and managed to secure a seat even without a reservation, as long as I finished by 1:00 PM. I ordered the pork cutlet set with hot tea, which was served in about 14 minutes. The pork cutlet was thick and juicy, the rice and cabbage were average, the miso soup was delicious, and the pickles were okay. I paid 2,090 yen in cash, thanked the security guard, and headed to the nearby traditional Japanese sweets shop.

I arrived around 11:50 am on Saturday, but the restaurant was full. They asked me to come back in 15 minutes. I couldn't wait in front of the restaurant, so I walked around the neighborhood. The lunch was only available at the counter. I sat in a corner. The other customers were a group of three elderly women and an elderly couple. There were many fans with the names of geisha and maiko in the back, giving the place an elegant atmosphere. They served me simmered sardines with ginger as an appetizer, which was refreshing and whetted my appetite. The tea served was probably Kyoto Ban-cha from Ippodo, with a perfect richness and a delicious aroma. The awaited fillet was delicious even without any sauce. Of course, dipping it in the sauce made it even better. It was thick, tender, and simply perfect. I was happy that miso soup was included. Next time, I want to try the loin. A couple at the next table ordered fillet and loin, and they shared a little bit with each other. I envied them being able to try both. The only thing I didn't like was the pickled vegetables. It might be hit or miss.

First visit. I happened to come across this tonkatsu restaurant in Kyoto. Reviews said that reservations are a must, but I decided to give it a try anyway. Luckily, the last table was available and I was seated right away. Customers who had made reservations started arriving as soon as they opened, showing how popular the place is. I ordered the rosu katsu that day. The tonkatsu that was brought to me had a thick cut of pork with a thin coating, and I was surprised by its light and crispy texture when I took a bite! It was my first time having tonkatsu that was so crunchy and easy to eat. The braised pork belly bowl that the person next to me ordered also looked delicious. The restaurant seemed to have many regular customers and had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Thank you for the meal!

I made a reservation for 12:15 on a holiday and arrived at the restaurant. It was about a 5-minute walk from the subway station to City Hall. There were no other customers inside, so I was the first one there. I was seated at the counter right away. They asked if I wanted my tea warm or cold, and I chose cold. I ordered the rosukatsu set meal (2090 yen). There was mustard and soy sauce on the counter. The food arrived in about 10 minutes. They mentioned that I could have seconds of rice. The breading on the tonkatsu was finely textured. The cabbage was cut in large pieces, which is unusual for a tonkatsu restaurant. I tried a bite of the tonkatsu without any sauce, and it was delicious. Truly deserving of being called one of the top tonkatsu restaurants. I also liked the sauce. When I asked for salt, they brought it to me on a plate. It tasted even better with salt! I was tempted to have seconds of rice, so I asked for it! The miso soup was also very tasty. Thank you for the meal. It was really delicious.

Ordered menu: Rosukatsu set meal for 2090 yen, Hirekatsu set meal for 2090 yen. Located a 5-minute walk from Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line Kyoto City Hall Station, this tonkatsu restaurant has been selected as one of the top 100 tonkatsu restaurants in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. Situated in a quiet residential area, the restaurant is marked by a curtain with the characters for "skill." Upon entering, you'll find a historical atmosphere with a stone-paved alleyway. The interior is predominantly black, with only a counter seating area available. As there were two of us, we ordered the Rosukatsu set meal and Hirekatsu set meal. The dishes arrived in about 15 minutes. The tonkatsu had a small breadcrumb coating, a deep tan color, and a thick, flavorful crust. It had a crispy texture and a strong aroma of frying oil, with a prominent black pepper flavor. The thickness of the coating was not consistent, and when lifted, the meat tended to separate. The Rosukatsu had a firm texture, with a chewy and meaty bite. The presence of fat was subtly felt, and it paired well with the tangy Worcestershire sauce, complementing the rice perfectly. The Hirekatsu was cooked slightly rare, retaining a moist and tender texture, emphasizing the meatiness. The light meat and rich crust balanced well together. The rice was slightly soft, enhancing the sweetness of the grains. The cabbage served on the side was roughly chopped, reminiscent of kushikatsu. Accompanied by pickled radish, pickles, and miso soup. The pickled radish had a light and mild seasoning, while the pickles had a distinct aroma that might be divisive. The miso soup had a sweet and savory miso flavor, with a fragrant touch of sansho pepper. Overall, it was a tonkatsu that embodied the long-standing history of Kyoto's tonkatsu scene. Thank you for the meal.

The thinly sliced pork belly and pork ribs at this restaurant are incredibly delicious. Personally, I find it hard to choose between the two, but I lean towards the pork ribs. They have a unique and juicy flavor without being too greasy. The miso soup and sauce are also tasty, and there is karashi (Japanese mustard) available. If you don't mind walking a bit from the station, I highly recommend this place. If my stomach were bottomless, I would have also tried the braised pork and pork steak.

I visited Tonkatsu Yamamoto while out shopping. Unlike the trendy tonkatsu restaurants lately, this place has a traditional feel. The breading is light and crispy, the meat is well-balanced with fat, thick, and delicious.

Roast pork cutlet set meal for 3,300 yen, Chicken wings for 500 yen. This restaurant has been selected as one of the top 100 tonkatsu restaurants in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022 by Tabelog with a rating of 3.69 as of June 8, 2023. I made a reservation by phone in the morning and visited around 7 pm. The interior has an L-shaped counter and private rooms. The counter also offers various side dishes for around 500 yen per plate. The set meal includes tonkatsu, cabbage, pickles, miso soup, and rice. The rice is plain, and the pickles are tangy and unique. The cabbage is served in large pieces without dressing, so I ate it with tonkatsu sauce. The tonkatsu had a delicate and thin crispy coating, and the meat was tender and flavorful. Although there was no salt provided, the slightly spicy sauce and mustard complemented the dish well. The miso soup was the best I've ever had, with a rich miso flavor and a hint of Sansho pepper. The atmosphere was traditional and the owner seemed strict but experienced. The restaurant has a no publicity policy, but the kind hostess provided excellent service. While there was a no photography sign, I asked for permission and was allowed to take photos for my Instagram. Overall, I recommend experiencing the unique ambiance and delicious food at this renowned tonkatsu restaurant.

The pork cutlet was thick and delicious! You can watch them fry it right in front of you at the counter seats. The miso soup was also tasty. The pickled vegetables had a unique aroma and flavor. It's rare to see cabbage not shredded. The stories from the owner were very interesting. It's not just branches, but skill.

I have visited this place once before, but I couldn't use it because I arrived late. So this time, even though it was on the same day, I made a reservation in advance. When you enter, you will see a stone-paved path leading to the entrance. The interior of the restaurant has a calm and dignified atmosphere, similar to a traditional Japanese restaurant, which uplifts your spirits. When I mentioned my reservation, I was politely escorted to my seat. The overall customer service is consistently polite in every aspect. There are 12 seats at the counter, each partitioned into sets of 2. From any seat, you can watch the cooking process, which adds to the excitement while waiting. - Rosukatsu set meal (2,090 yen): First, pickles and simmered liver are served with tonkatsu sauce. Then, tonkatsu, rice, and miso soup are served one after another. The tonkatsu has a fine breadcrumb coating and is relatively thin. The combination of thick meat and thin coating allows you to taste the meat without feeling excess oil. The tonkatsu sauce is fruity and light, enhancing the flavor of the meat. The cabbage side dish is not shredded, which is quite unique. At first, it felt strange, but when I tried it, I felt that it actually worked well. You can have unlimited rice refills. Some people even eat up to 4 bowls. The miso soup is full of ingredients. The mild fat blends with the miso, creating an elegant yet rich flavor. The accent of sansho pepper was particularly impressive to me. The pickles are lightly pickled, with a crispy texture and the natural flavor of the ingredients shining through. Especially, the quality of the simmered liver was outstanding, providing a very high level of satisfaction for a set meal at this price.

I passed by the restaurant a couple of times haha. Next to the sign was a shop called Tonkatsu Yamamoto, and the inside of the shop had a nostalgic and meticulous atmosphere! The shiny gold pot made me excited without realizing it. The wife was a friendly person with a lovely smile. It was my first visit, but we had a great conversation about bowling. The husband was a quiet person, giving off a craftsman vibe that I really liked. Wait! First of all, the dried daikon radish and miso soup were delicious! The conversation and chopsticks advanced before eating the tonkatsu. I heard from the apprentice that the miso soup is prepared with time and care. The dried daikon radish had a taste that I had never experienced before! I don't know how to describe it... Please try it ❤️ The tonkatsu was beautifully presented! You could tell it was fried carefully. The meat had no unpleasant smell and had the sweetness of pork. I compared the two, but I preferred the loin. I will definitely go back! As I write this, my mouth is watering ===========

Ordered the rosukatsu set meal (2090 yen), which has been selected as one of the top 100 tonkatsu restaurants. Since I couldn't make a reservation on my last visit, I made a reservation two weeks in advance this time. The interior of the restaurant felt a bit dirty. The tonkatsu itself was not very impressive in terms of taste.

I visited a tonkatsu specialty restaurant in Kyoto, a short walk north from Kyoto City Hall. When I entered through the large curtain, I found a charming restaurant tucked away in a quaint alley. The interior had a cozy atmosphere with counter seats surrounding the kitchen and private rooms. The counter was adorned with a variety of side dishes, adding to the lovely ambiance. I made a reservation for a weekday evening and was impressed by the elegant manner of the woman who took my call. I believe she was the one who served us, and her refined demeanor instantly made me a fan. What I had: - Rosukatsu set meal - Rosukatsu (pork cutlet) - Cabbage - Pickles - Miso soup - Rice The Rosukatsu was incredibly delicious. The thinly coated pork cutlet was fried to perfection, with a crispy outer layer and juicy, tender meat. The breading was light and crunchy, while the meat was quality and tender, melting in the mouth. The sweetness of the oil spread in the mouth, but it didn't feel heavy; rather, it had a light and airy texture. The cabbage was cut into larger pieces rather than shredded, a unique touch. The miso soup was also outstanding, with a rich and deep flavor profile that was a new experience for me. It had a slightly unique taste, but after taking a sip, I was amazed by its deliciousness. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

The conversation with the elegant proprietress is lively. The master is silently working. The pork cutlet has a thin, crispy coating similar to beef cutlet. It is fried slowly at a low temperature, making it refreshing with a lingering savory aroma. The meat is flavorful with a good balance of fat, both the meat and fat are delicious. The sauce is slightly fruity and light. The miso soup is made with white miso, slightly sweet like a sake lees soup. It is well-stewed with vegetables that are soft and tender. The perfect firmness of the meat, refreshing taste of the rice, and the acidity of the pickles complement each other well. Truly deserving of the praise it receives in Kyoto, with impeccable ingredients, techniques, service, and a flawless overall experience.

Tomorrow I will be playing golf in Hyogo Prefecture, so I decided to head there early. I had some extra time, so I made a reservation and came to this restaurant in Kyoto to have tonkatsu before heading out. There is a coin parking lot right next to the restaurant where you can park for 100 yen for 20 minutes. When I entered the restaurant at 12:00, there were only a few customers, including a person in a traditional Japanese outfit who reminded me of the character Yamaoka Shiro from the manga "Oishinbo." The atmosphere made me feel like I was really in Kyoto. A kind lady greeted and served us, and the restaurant was so quiet that it felt like talking was not allowed. I ordered the hirekatsu set for 2090 yen and the rosukatsu set for 2090 yen. Two elderly male chefs were cooking in the kitchen, and I watched them nostalgically as I used to work at a tonkatsu restaurant when I was young. They cooked with care and took their time. The menu did not specify the origin or brand of the pork, and the meat was not exceptionally tender, but it had a good texture and a delicious sweetness. The hirekatsu had a slightly loose coating and broke apart when picked up, but it was tender and tasty. My friend commented that it was slightly overcooked, but I found it delicious. I was not used to the strong flavor of the pickles made with rice bran, so I left them uneaten. The owner mentioned that we could have more rice if we wanted, but my friend shared some with me, so we didn't ask for more. The cabbage was served as whole leaves with tonkatsu sauce, which I found unusual, so I left half of it uneaten. I prefer shredded cabbage with dressing. There was no salt on the table, but when I asked, they provided some. It's impressive that the owner, who seems to be quite elderly, is still actively running a popular restaurant. If you add up the ages of the three of them, they must be well over 200 years old. I hope they continue to fry delicious tonkatsu. Rating at the time of posting: 3.69

Near Kyoto City Hall, there is a famous tonkatsu restaurant in Kyoto. Even before entering the restaurant, there was a sense of it being a top-notch place, and I had a feeling that something absolutely delicious would be served. Despite my high expectations, the fillet cutlet exceeded them by far! The tenderness of the meat, the color, shape, juiciness... I couldn't believe that such delicious food existed! It's the kind of place that makes you want to immediately tell people who haven't tried their food yet. A restaurant loved by regular customers for a long time! I will definitely go back!
