Located near Karasuma Oike Station, on Nishinotoindori Street, is a pizza and wood-fired cuisine restaurant. "Enboca" Kyoto branch is known for its unique pizzas made with seasonal Japanese ingredients, designed by architect Masashi Imai. Using local Kyoto ingredients, they offer appetizers, wood-fired dishes, and creative pizzas. The Kyoto branch opened in December 2010. The Tokyo branch closed in March 2022, but the Kyoto and Karuizawa branches are still open. It is about a 6-7 minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station. Walk west on Oike Street, turn left on Nishinotoindori Street, and it will be on your right after crossing Rokkaku Street. The restaurant is a renovated traditional Kyoto townhouse over 100 years old, giving it a unique atmosphere. They are open for dinner, with weekend lunch service available. While reservations are not required, it is recommended to make one due to its popularity. During my visit in the evening, I made a seat-only reservation about a month in advance. The interior is spacious with a high ceiling extending to the second floor. There are counter seats near the entrance and table seats further back, with enough space between tables. I was seated at a table, and the atmosphere was cozy, with friendly and welcoming service. The menu includes a variety of options such as salads, wood-fired dishes, and pizzas that can be customized with different toppings. They also offer drinks and course menus. I ordered the following items: a glass of white wine (¥850), Enboca-style salad (half size, ¥700), and two pizzas: Sakura shrimp and mizuna, and bamboo shoot. The salad was flavorful with a spicy kick from red peppercorns, and the pizzas had a chewy and fluffy crust. The combination of Japanese ingredients and pizza dough was surprisingly delicious. The pizzas were unique and memorable, showcasing the potential of combining Japanese flavors with pizza. I spent about 1 hour and 20 minutes there, enjoying the perfectly portioned and impressive pizzas. I was so impressed that I would like to visit again in the future.
