After going to the gym, I had a slightly late lunch. It was so hot that I decided to have refreshing sushi. I ordered a set of 9 nigiri and chirashi sushi. The lunch set also came with miso soup and a dessert pudding, all for only 1300 yen, which is quite reasonable. The restaurant, with its Edo-style atmosphere, really gives off a traditional vibe. The seating is limited, so there might be a wait during peak hours. Thank you for the delicious meal.

I suddenly felt like eating sushi, so I followed my instincts and visited the restaurant. I ordered a 9-piece sushi assortment and fried horse mackerel. The sushi, carefully prepared and served on a black stone slab, was all fresh and delicious. Personally, I especially enjoyed the scallop and tuna. The fried horse mackerel was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, very tasty. There were many other menu items that caught my eye, so I would like to come back again.

It takes about a little over an hour to walk from Toyocho. While considering what to eat in front of Ryogoku Station in a busy state, I decided to skip "Tonkatsu Hasegawa," "Yakiniku Like," and "Pepper Lunch" as meat might be a bit heavy. I entered Edo NOREN and on the left side, I tried to have a bowl of soba at "Nihonbashi Yabukyu," but it was full with 3-4 groups waiting, so I switched to eel. I entered "Tsukuda Takisaburo" and ordered a bottle of beer (Asahi Super Dry) and an eel bowl. Asahi beer is understandable in Ryogoku, the home of Asahi beer, and Super Dry is satisfying. As for the eel bowl, the meat is lean. It's not bad, but lacking in warmth. The one bite pudding for dessert was delicious.

I used it for lunch on a regular day. The restaurant was quite crowded, with many foreign customers. The interior of the restaurant is long and narrow, with counter seats and tables at the back. Both the sushi and chirashi were generous in portion, and I left feeling full!

I tried to go to a restaurant for lunch on my day off, but it was closed. I found a sushi restaurant in Ryogoku Edo NOREN next to Ryogoku Station, so I decided to eat there. The restaurant had counter seats and table seats. I ordered the lunch chirashi bowl (1,200 yen) with grated ginger instead of wasabi. The staff didn't know about grated ginger, so I had to explain it to them. The chirashi bowl had 10 kinds of toppings, including fish with sesame miso dressing, shrimp, egg, salmon, medium fatty tuna, and sea bream. It came with pickled ginger and chopped pickled daikon. The rice was warm and slightly soft. The miso soup had fish bones and seaweed in it. For dessert, I had a creamy and rich pudding with a slightly bitter caramel on top, served in a small dish. I was happy to have dessert included. I enjoyed a great value lunch on my day off.

I heard that a shop in Keisei Tateishi had to relocate and moved to Ryogoku Edo NOREN (according to a Tateishi resident). The shop is located inside Ryogoku Edo NOREN, with a clean and beautiful interior mainly featuring a counter where it is easy for solo diners to enter. There are also a few table seats in the back. I visited during lunchtime on a weekday and ordered hitsumabushi and a serving of red sea urchin at a special price. Being able to eat eel and sushi at the same time is the best. The hitsumabushi looks visually stunning, with no off-flavors and a rich fatty taste. The eel is thick and tender, almost fluffy. I first ate it as it is, then added sansho pepper and wasabi, and finally poured dashi to make ochazuke. Eel is so delicious. The oshinko (pickles) are also very tasty, with four types of pickled vegetables included, which is a high point. As for lunch, there was a dessert of pudding!! The pudding was incredibly smooth and delicious, making it hard to believe it was from a random shop. And I casually ordered the red sea urchin. It was the most delicious sea urchin I've had recently, which was the most shocking thing. However, I forgot to take a picture as I ordered it on a whim... Even though it was a complimentary dish, honestly, isn't it something that shouldn't be eaten at this price? This is a wonderful restaurant.

I came to Ryogoku for work around 1 pm on a regular day, so I decided to grab some food first. I went into Edo NOREN (I think it used to be called Hana no Mai) right next to the station. Among the many delicious looking restaurants, I noticed the recently popular "Tsukuda Takitaro". The sign stood out with the phrase "Ebisuko kimeteru ka?" which I found intriguing. I asked the staff inside and apparently it's a term used in the sumo and martial arts industry, meaning "Are you eating enough?". Inside Edo NOREN, there was a real sumo ring set up, which was exciting. Anyway, let's focus on the food... Let's Ebisuko.
I ordered the "Unaju" which came with a large portion of rice. The eel used was domestically sourced, so it was thick and fluffy. The sauce had a nice balance of sweetness with depth and richness. The surface was perfectly grilled to a fragrant crisp, while the inside was juicy. The rice soaked in the sauce was delightful. The soup was liver soup, with tender liver and a delicate, flavorful broth. I enjoyed it more than the Unaju I waited 30 minutes for at a famous store in Narita.
The attention to detail in the ingredients, grilling technique, and sauce made this eel dish a great value for the price. It was mentioned that they are directly operated by a wholesaler at Toyosu Market, so I would like to try their sushi and seafood bowls. The eel is only available at the Ryogoku branch, while there are sushi branches in Kinshicho and Asakusa. Next time, I will try their sushi at Let's Ebisuko.

Lunch at Ryogoku Station in 2023. We wandered around Ryogoku Edo NOREN and decided on a sushi restaurant. We ordered a 9-piece nigiri sushi set for 1450 yen, which included delicious varieties like tuna, squid, shrimp, salmon, ikura, hamachi, and suzuki. The sushi was freshly made and very tasty, with perfect rice texture. It came with a simple and delicious miso soup. Overall, a great sushi restaurant with quick service and delicious food. Highly recommended.

Chirashi bowl for 2,500 yen. It comes out in 3 minutes. Includes 14 types of toppings, including egg. The freshness of the toppings is great! However, the vinegar rice is a bit disappointing. I had a similar experience with the sushi at a different branch.

In the Sumo town of Ryogoku, there is a recently opened restaurant called "Tsukuda Takisaburo Ryogoku Edo NOREN" on the first floor of the JR Sobu Line station west exit, which retains a retro atmosphere with its visually striking station building. The restaurant has been gaining attention for its impressive dishes. Upon entering the restaurant with its Edo period-style entrance, there were counter seats lined up and a few table seats towards the back. This time, I tried the "Edomae Anago Donburi" (2,200 yen) along with a highball. The volume of the donburi served in a large bowl was amazing, with a generous amount of anago piled on top. The rice portion was on the lighter side, allowing the plentiful anago to stand out. The fluffy and shiny fresh thickly sliced anago, coated with a sweet sauce, combined perfectly with the textures of white and green onions, and cucumber. As soon as you take a bite, the soft sweetness and richness of the anago spread in your mouth, followed by a wave of deliciousness and joy throughout your body. The Edo-mae term has various interpretations, but it generally refers to fresh ingredients caught in Tokyo Bay. It's a delight to be able to enjoy such lively ingredients nearby! While Tsukuda Takisaburo may give off a strong visual impression, the dishes served here are not just about appearances. The anago donburi was truly delicious and worth the price. You can feel the dedication of the restaurant in this dish, and it was a delightful experience. Besides the anago donburi, they also offer eel dishes, nigiri sushi, chirashi bowls, maguro three-color donburi, and more. It seems like the restaurant is run by a wholesale fish dealer. With the recent restrictions on overseas tourists affecting businesses, it's great to see such a good restaurant opening in Ryogoku Edo NOREN.

I went to this restaurant with my wife for lunch on a day off. We wanted to have a good meal before watching the sumo wrestling match. It is located inside Ryogoku Edo Noren, next to the Kokugikan. We ordered a lunch sushi set with 9 pieces for 1,200 yen. The sushi had generous portions and was very delicious. The price was reasonable and it even came with a dessert, which was a tasty pudding. If we ever feel like having sushi again, we will definitely go back! Thank you for the meal!

JR Ryogoku Station's west exit is home to Edo NOREN, which opened on November 25, 2016. The concept is to enjoy the refined food culture of Edo. Initially, there were 12 Japanese restaurants, but due to the impact of the pandemic, 7 have since closed. New additions include Menjo Tadokoro and Tsukuda Takisaburo, bringing the total number of operating shops to 7. One of the newcomers in June 2022 is Tsukuda Takisaburo. Established over a hundred years ago, it is directly managed by "Narichi Sakaihama" from Toyosu Market. The sign outside the shop provides information about Tsukuda Takisaburo, a fisherman and fish seller by trade. In the early Edo period, he was a descendant of fishermen who relocated from Osaka's Tsukuda Village to Tsukudajima in present-day Chuo Ward at the behest of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was known as "Urado no Taki" because he lived behind Sumiyoshi Shrine and loved festivals. It is said that he only ate fish dishes and his catchphrase to young men was, "Are you ready to eat like a sumo wrestler? Don't be modest. This is not the time to show off." "Ebisuko" is a term used in sumo wrestling to refer to a sumo wrestler who eats a lot. I once tried all 12 shops at Ryogoku Edo NOREN, but with the arrival of this big-name rookie, I decided to visit during Saturday lunchtime. The lunch menu includes sushi, rice bowls, and eel dishes. I opted for the Lunch Sushi (9 pieces) for 1,200 yen, which comes with a soup and dessert. The sushi features large-sized toppings, including ikura. The tuna today is freshly caught from Sakaiminato. It was delicious. I didn't eat like a sumo wrestler this time, but this amount of food was satisfying.

Located in the food court directly connected to the west exit of the station, this new restaurant specializes in both sushi and eel dishes, with six locations throughout Tokyo. I tried the lower-grade eel rice bowl priced at 3,400 yen. The eel is non-branded and sourced from Aichi, but the cooking method is unspecified. It took about 20 minutes from ordering to being served. The eel was well-prepared, with plump and fatty meat, and perfectly cooked tail. The crispy eel tail is a must-have for eel enthusiasts. The sauce was a sweet and salty soy sauce-based flavor. The rice portion was average, cooked just right, and soaked in the sauce perfectly. Extra sauce is available. The dish also comes with eel liver and pickles. Until June 23, all items are 20% off, and they offer a wide selection of sake with 27 different types available in 180ml bottles. The appetizers are sourced directly from Tsukiji and are perfect for a midday drink.

Today, I decided to have grilled eel, so I ordered the eel rice bowl here. However, the eel was not grilled over charcoal but simply reheated. It lacked the crispy texture and smoky flavor I was expecting, which was quite disappointing. Furthermore, the eel pieces were stacked on top of each other in the bowl, making it look unappetizing. Despite the restaurant claiming to serve Edo-style sushi and eel, it felt like a bit of a scam, with a sleazy vibe reminiscent of the old town. It might be better not to think too deeply about it, but I can't help feeling regretful that I could have eaten something more delicious for the same price.

I had a great time purchasing the final point of the "Chu-otoki" and using a spoon to shave it off was really entertaining! I tried three different types of sake, had a glass of draft beer, and enjoyed some delicious river shrimp tempura. The deep-fried river shrimp was different from sea shrimp, but still tasty. The fresh oysters were rich and delicious, and the sushi selection was varied and all delicious. I would be happy if this restaurant was in Shinjuku or Ebisu! I would definitely want to visit again when I go to Ryogoku area!
