(2016/5)This is a revisit after seeing the commercial for "Sushiya's Una-don". I also wanted to try the "Aged Tuna". I started with some sushi and ended with Una-don. I arrived early after the restaurant opened, with only a few customers already seated. I was quickly shown to a table and served tea while deciding what to order. I tried the following items:
1. Pufferfish sashimi: Decent texture, similar to what you can find in supermarkets.
2. Uni (sea urchin) sushi: Contains squid, tobiko, but lacks the uni flavor, more suitable for kids.
3. Aged tuna: Regular red tuna, no noticeable aged flavor.
4. Aged fatty tuna (1st batch): Disappointing, lacked aged flavor.
5. Uni sushi: Uni and shiso leaf sushi, quite tasty.
6. Tsubugai (whelk): Delicious, one of my favorites.
7. Fresh squid with shiso leaf: Good freshness, enjoyable with shiso leaf.
8. White mirugai (geoduck clam): Tasty with good texture.
9. Fatty salmon: Delicious and flavorful.
10. Aged flounder: Lacked aged flavor, slightly dry.
11. Aged fatty tuna (2nd batch): Decent, enjoyable.
12. Marinated tuna: Tasty, compliments the quality of the fish.
13. Sushiya's Una-don: Fluffy eel, but too much rice compared to eel.
14. Fatty tuna roll: Delicious, a good way to end the meal.
I noticed that the quality of the sushi varied, so it might be better to choose from the rotating plates rather than ordering. The 100 yen "Aged fatty tuna" was disappointing at first, but as time passed, better quality dishes started coming around, making it more satisfying. Overall, I felt that the constraint of keeping everything at 100 yen was limiting, and offering slightly more expensive but tastier options would be better.
(2014/11)It had been a while, but after seeing the commercial for "Aged Tuna" on TV, I impulsively decided to visit the restaurant. "Aged" seems to be a trend lately, and I find myself drawn to this word. The restaurant opens before 11:00 am on weekends and holidays, so I arrived around 10:50 am and the place was almost empty, probably the 3rd or 4th customer. However, more customers started coming in, and by 11:40 am, it was full. Initially, there were plenty of sushi plates rotating, and orders were quickly served. The kids enjoyed items like salmon roe, sweet omelette, and egg, at their own pace. The adults started with the "Aged Tuna", which was quite good, leading us to try the "Aged Fatty Tuna" and "Aged Medium Fatty Tuna". The fish in the regular nigiri seemed to be aged to some extent, as we didn't feel any special "aged" flavor but found them delicious. There was also "Aged Flounder" which was quite enjoyable. Squid, squid legs, and other items were tasty, and the shiny nori rolls were also good. Some items were better than others, but considering it's 100 yen sushi, it's understandable. The slightly sweet pickled ginger was a bit disappointing. Three adults and one child ate to their heart's content and the bill was around 3,000 yen, which was quite affordable.
