On June 25, 2010 (Friday), I had lunch around the company area near Yoyogi-Uehara. Since the weather was nice, I decided to explore a soba restaurant that was still undiscovered and a bit away from the station. It took about 10 minutes from Yoyogi-Uehara Station. The restaurant, called "Tanbaya," had a traditional soba shop feel. It was my first time visiting, even though I often passed by in front of the shop. I entered around 2:30 PM and was surprised by how spacious the interior was! There were about 40 seats, and the layout of the space was comfortable and inviting. The atmosphere was clean and had a feeling of a traditional Japanese soba restaurant in a hot spring town. The electric stone mill machine operating at the entrance added to the authentic feel of the place. I sat down and checked the menu, which had a wide variety of options including soba, udon, rice bowls, and set meals. There were also soba and rice set meals available for those who love both. I was a bit indecisive about whether to go for the soba or a rice bowl/set meal. But since I was quite hungry, I decided to go for a set meal and ordered the "Ginger Pork Set Meal Mini Mori Set (¥900-)." It was my first time at a soba restaurant, so forgive me for not ordering soba (laughs). The set meals are only available after 2:00 PM, and since it was already 2:30 PM, I decided to order one. The restaurant was quiet, with only a few customers. An elderly lady dining alone was having tempura soba. It was a relaxing afternoon atmosphere. After about 5 minutes of waiting, my order arrived. The mini mori set had a generous portion. The ginger pork and cabbage side dish looked delicious. The meal also came with pickles, chilled tofu, and a small side dish, which was a nice touch. I quickly added wasabi and green onions to the soba broth and started eating. The soba was finely cut and had a good texture. The broth was slightly sweet with a strong soy sauce flavor. It was a simple and light soba dish that I enjoyed slurping up quickly. I finished it in no time and was served soba-yu (soba water). The soba-yu was light and refreshing, a perfect way to end the soba meal. Moving on to the main dish, the ginger pork set meal was delicious. The ginger pork was a simple home-cooked dish with mirin, soy sauce, sake, ginger, and sugar. It was a comforting and flavorful dish that went well with the generous amount of cabbage. The rice was also delicious. I finished the meal quickly, as always. Everything was tasty. The soba and set meal were both satisfying, and I would definitely recommend trying different items from the menu. The prices were reasonable, and the variety of choices was impressive. The electric stone mill machine at the entrance promised delicious soba, so I look forward to trying their soba dishes next time. They have a good selection of chilled dishes, so I might try the grated radish soba. However, I might end up giving in to the temptation of the katsu-don (pork cutlet bowl) (laughs). Overall, "Tanbaya" has a lot to offer, except for its location. It's a place where you can enjoy a hearty meal, so it might be a good idea to walk a bit to burn off those calories. (laughs)
