The restaurant was surprisingly structured like a bar, with only counter seats and a narrow and long space. It felt like an Indian small dishes creative izakaya. The beer selection was impressive, especially the Nagoya miso-infused ale was delicious. The two varieties of biryani were flavorful, with one being more "Kyoto-style" and the other more traditional Indian. The toppings of beef were tasty, and the two curries were outstanding. The dark-colored curry with a hint of gaminess turned out to be wild boar, with a strong and satisfying taste. The lighter-colored curry with tender meat and fruity flavors was surprisingly made with pork, which was named Melon Pork. The creativity and unique flavors of the dishes truly impressed me.

I visited the restaurant around 1 PM on a regular weekday and it was 70% full. Three female staff were working. The sea bream broth biryani was sold out, so we ordered chicken biryani, spiced eggs, and chicken curry. The spiced eggs were a complimentary service for adding the restaurant on LINE, so the total cost was 1600 yen including tax (1300 yen for the food and 300 yen for the eggs). The dishes arrived in about 5 minutes. The biryani was quite generous, around 300g, while the chicken curry was a bit small. The biryani included a piece of bone-in chicken. The taste was mild and delicate. The chicken curry was not very spicy, more oil-based. It was delicious to eat it with the biryani. The spiced eggs had a nice kick of spices and were tasty. Overall, it was an elegant biryani. I would like to try their recommended sea bream broth biryani next time.

This is a specialty store for Chicken Biryani (a type of Indian or Pakistani mixed rice dish). There were 4 types of Biryani and curry to choose from. By around 7pm, several Biryani dishes were already sold out, indicating that it is a popular shop. The majority of customers were women, and the seating was only at the counter. The interior was decorated with many spice jars, making it a cute shop. It was an exciting experience to taste various vegetables and the tingling spices. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the restaurant by walking from Gyoza Yu through Nishiki Market, and luckily there was an available seat so I didn't have to wait. I ordered a mixed plate of Tandoori chicken biryani and mutton biryani, along with a side of spiced eggs (free with LINE registration), totaling ¥1,700. I have recently been getting into Indian cuisine, so I decided to try biryani for the first time in Kyoto. The fragrant basmati rice, cooked with minimal water, was not inferior to Japanese rice, but I found that the Japanese-style seasoning didn't quite match well with it. The mutton, cooked together with the rice, was a bit dry, but it still seemed to complement the basmati rice better. The mapo tofu that came with the mixed plate was not satisfying for someone who prefers authentic Chinese cuisine. The only highlight was the spiced eggs, which were delicious, so I tried to replicate them at home right after. I would like to gain more experience with Indian cuisine before revisiting this restaurant.

I had been passing by this shop many times and thought it looked like a bar, but it turned out to be a biryani specialty store. I finally visited for the first time. However, I arrived close to the last order time, so all the menu items except for the chicken biryani were sold out. I reluctantly ordered the chicken biryani (with egg topping) and lassi. The fluffy texture of the biryani was gone in no time. I had only eaten biryani with firm rice before, so this one might be a hit or miss depending on your preference. The counter is really narrow, and the distance to the staff is close. It may be good for those who enjoy chatting. However, I wanted to relax and space out after eating, but the counter was too narrow, so I had to leave soon. I want to try the sea bream chicken biryani next time.

Around 5:30 PM on Saturday, there was one customer already seated, followed by two more. We ordered a mixed plate of mutton biryani and the limited edition biryani with sardines and ginger (changed from mackerel to sardines). We chose the small portion with egg topping. The basmati rice was light and easy to eat, so we finished the biryani quickly! The classic mutton biryani was delicious, but the limited edition was also tasty and suited our preferences!

Biryani shop! The compact interior with only a counter made it easy for a woman to enter alone. The biryani with sea bream broth is delicious. Even though it's biryani, it has a Japanese twist. It's nice that you can add toppings like eggs and vegetables.

A Biryani specialty shop with a bar-like counter. The atmosphere is nice, but what caught my ear right away was the Misawa Home commercial song, haha... There is a full chorus of this song! When I SHAZAMed it, I found out that while I was there, the only songs playing in this shop were by a duo called Humbert Humbert. I wanted to order the combination dish (1,700 yen) with lassi (300 yen) because it comes with mapo tofu, which is said to be popular here for its Japanese-style seasoning. I intended to order that, but I was too late and it was sold out, so I ended up with the chicken and mutton biryani. Despite being a beginner with biryani, I love the spiced rice dishes from India and neighboring countries. The combination of basmati rice is amazing, but I found the rice here to be quite soft. Personally, I prefer it a bit firmer, and the seasoning was a bit sparse with yellow coloring. The spice combination was complex and impressive, typical of a specialty shop, but I didn't quite enjoy the chicken and mutton. Personally, I thought the mapo tofu was the most delicious. Noteworthy is the deliciousness of the lassi!! Rich and creamy! I highly recommend ordering this. Thank you for the meal.

I visited during the usual lunch hours. The restaurant is long and narrow, and the seats were a bit cramped. It is a small two-story establishment. The food was served quickly, had a strong ethnic flavor, and was delicious. They also have limited-time menu items, so I would like to come back again.

I visited the JAPANESE CURRY FESTIVAL held in Shibuya at Shibuya Tokyu Plaza 6th floor, where the Kyoto Biryani specialty store "INDIA GATE" was operating for a limited time from August 11th (Friday) to August 18th (Friday). I tried the Biryani combination of two types for 2090 yen. It was the right choice to get the combination of two types. The Red Snapper Spicy Saikyo Pickled Biryani was spicy and had a strong spicy flavor, while the Sea Bream Dashi Chicken Biryani was a gentle and mellow Biryani.

Kyoto Day 1. I stumbled upon a biryani specialty store while pondering what to eat. Although there are biryani specialty stores like "Biryani Osawa" in Tokyo, the biryani made with sea bream broth caught my attention, so I decided to visit. There are various menu options from the classics to daily specials, but today I ordered the following:
- Sea Bream Broth Chicken Biryani & Mutton Biryani ¥1700
- Spiced Egg ¥100
- Pickled Long Yam ¥100
- Pork Vindaloo ¥400
- Homemade Lassi ¥300
It arrived in about 15 minutes. The biryani looked beautiful. I opted for a combination of sea bream broth and mutton, and the sea bream broth was truly unique. The fusion of Japanese and Indian flavors made it easy to eat, with the sea bream flavor shining through and the spices used skillfully. The Pork Vindaloo may not have been necessary (I prefer a bit more acidity). There were many female customers, and I think the sea bream broth option would be well-received. If you love biryani, I recommend giving it a try!

A brand new creative biryani dish that is so delicious it will bring tears to your eyes, from a famous restaurant. It made its appearance at the JAPANESE CURRY FESTIVAL 2023 in Shibuya. I went there with a friend. August 13, 2023, Sunday, 5:08 PM
- Biryani Combo (2 types):
- Sea Bream Dashi Chicken Biryani (with Mapo Tofu)
- Mutton Keema Muscat Biryani
- Side Dishes:
- Lamb Keema Bindaloo (Root Topping)
- Khao Soi Biryani (Full Topping) with Khao Soi Soup from Hokuhuku
- Boiled Egg Salad
- Salmon with Mustard Oil Yukhoe
- Lamb and Bamboo Shoots with Spicy Achaar
- Basmati Mini Seafood Donburi with Ikura Achaar
- Spice Highball
- Lassi Khao Soi Biryani
A collaboration between the popular Osaka restaurant "Hokuhuku" and the amazing Indiagate, offering a limited menu. They cook the biryani using Hokuhuku's Khao Soi soup, and serve the biryani with a side of Khao Soi soup. This special biryani combines Indian, Japanese, and Thai flavors, with full toppings. Adding the original Achaar for free by adding them as LINE friends was a nice touch. The fluffy Basmati rice complements the Khao Soi's ethnic flavor, and when combined with the additional toppings, it creates an unparalleled deliciousness. Adding the Khao Soi soup transforms the dish into a Chiang Mai experience. It surprisingly maintains a balance between the biryani and Khao Soi flavors, enhancing the overall taste.
Biryani Combo
My companion ordered the following:
- Sea Bream Dashi Chicken Biryani: A gentle biryani with a rich sea bream broth and spices, served with Mapo Tofu.
- Mutton Keema Muscat Biryani: A spicy mutton dish with a fruity touch that surprisingly harmonizes well with the lamb Keema Bindaloo.
Basmati Mini Seafood Donburi
A mini version of Indiagate's must-try dish, featuring fluffy Basmati rice topped with premium sashimi. The texture of the Basmati rice melting in your mouth upon the first bite is truly unique. Adding the delicious Ikura Achaar enhances the dish's flavors.
Indiagate, opened in Kyoto on July 31, 2020, is a biryani specialty restaurant known for its creative and delicious biryanis, including traditional chicken and mutton dishes as well as innovative creations. The owner, musician Satoshi Yamagata, discovered biryani during his band's nationwide tours in 2009. His biryani is not limited to traditional cooking methods but incorporates unique ideas, including using dashi broth and combining Japanese flavors. The biryanis are a new wave of deliciousness that breaks down barriers and preconceptions. When I asked the staff if they had plans to expand to Tokyo, they mentioned that they are currently focusing on staff training. This raised my hopes for a future Tokyo branch! They made a special appearance at the JAPANESE CURRY FESTIVAL 2023 in Shibuya, offering exceptionally delicious creative biryanis. Highly recommended.

I came to Kyoto for a trip and searched for a highly rated trendy biryani restaurant. I decided to go since it was a rare opportunity to try biryani. I like spicy food, so I chose the mutton biryani. It captured my taste buds completely. It was incredibly delicious. It made me want to explore more biryani options.

A rare biryani specialty store. The biryani served at the bar-like counter seems to be enjoyed with alcohol by many people. I ordered the small portion of chicken biryani. Even the normal size doesn't seem to have that much quantity, so the small portion was enough for me. The biryani itself was easier to eat compared to the ones at Indian cuisine specialty stores, maybe slightly tailored for Japanese taste. It felt elegant and sophisticated, like a curry pilaf that resembles the local flavor (sorry if it's unclear). The staff were polite and likable, but the slightly high cost and the long wait for the food were minor drawbacks. However, it was a taste that makes you want to eat it occasionally. It was delicious.

India Gate. I often visit their booth at events in Tokyo, so I was excited to finally visit their main store. I tried the following dishes: 1) A combination of Sazae and Gobo Biryani with a slightly bitter taste and Tai Dashi Chicken Biryani 2) A combination of Tai Dashi Chicken Biryani and Mutton Biryani. They were so delicious! The limited Sazae and Gobo Biryani had a unique and amazing flavor. The idea of using Sazae liver to make the gravy, and adding fresh seaweed was genius. I can't wait for their next event in Tokyo!

I had plans on Shijo Street, so I went to INDIAGATE and ordered a combination of Chicken Biryani and Mutton Biryani. The chicken was cooked with bones, but they were small and crunchy, so I could easily bite through them. It had a rich flavor from the bone marrow, which was nice. The mutton had a strong aroma, and it was delicious. They have many tempting dishes like Chicken Biryani with sea bream broth, and curry, so I look forward to my next visit.

Opened in 2020 as a rare biryani specialty store in Kyoto, "INDIAGATE" quickly gained popularity. The owner, a musician, discovered biryani after trying curry at various locations nationwide during tours. The name of the restaurant is taken directly from an Indian rice manufacturer, giving it a modern exterior with a bar-like interior. The shelves are lined with spice jars and alcohol bottles, giving it a unique vibe that may not immediately scream "Indian cuisine" to unsuspecting visitors. During lunchtime, the restaurant is incredibly popular and often has long lines, but visiting during off-peak hours like 3 or 4 pm can help you avoid the crowds. With a wide variety of biryani options and toppings, we ordered the beginner-friendly "Sea Bream Chicken Biryani" and "Mutton Biryani" combo for 1,700 yen. The Sea Bream Chicken Biryani, cooked with sea bream dashi, had a strong spice flavor that somewhat masked the delicate sea bream taste. The Mutton Biryani, on the other hand, with its distinct mutton flavor, felt more authentic to biryani. Accompanied by a side of mapo tofu, the dish was flavorful but the combination felt a bit mismatched. Overall, at 1,700 yen for a single plate, the meal was delicious but slightly on the pricey side. The fusion of Indian cuisine with a touch of Japanese influence may not be for everyone, but the restaurant's popularity speaks for itself. While the concept may not align with my personal preferences, it's clear that many enjoy the unique offerings at INDIAGATE. Perhaps I'm better suited for a more casual and affordable biryani experience like "HALALDOSABIRYANI."

Today, I had work in Karasuma, so I decided to have lunch at "INDIA GATE" restaurant. It was during the Gion Festival, and there were crowds of people near the shop due to the float procession. I arrived at the restaurant just before 3:00 PM, and the interior was empty with only one other customer. I ordered a combination of Duck Dashi Chicken Biryani and Mutton Biryani, along with homemade lassi. The food was served quickly, in about 4 minutes. The Duck Dashi Biryani had a unique Japanese twist to it, with a familiar yet new deliciousness. The Mutton Biryani was more standard in taste, but still flavorful. The variety of side dishes added different flavors to the meal. The lassi was rich and creamy, with a refreshing taste. Overall, it was a great experience with delicious biryani and I would recommend this restaurant. Thank you for the meal.
