It has been 2 months since my last visit to Yamagishi, a cozy little alleyway for drinking. I arrived relatively late, so it was naturally full. They had switched to their winter menu. Just like last time, we started with appetizers, sashimi, a choice of main dish (from 4 options), and a choice of vegetables (from 3 options). The appetizer was lotus root mochi with white miso, and fugu shirako with ponzu sauce. The main dish included peony hot pot, grilled fugu white meat, and salted mullet roe. For vegetable dishes, we had lily root with plum, and leaf wasabi with long yam. The daily recommendations were salted mullet roe mochi and deep-fried fugu. For Chinese dishes, we had crispy pork, steamed pork, grilled dumplings, and boiled dumplings. For fried foods, we had oyster fry, shrimp potato tempura, world-famous Chan-chan chicken wings, and chicken cartilage tempura. The hot dish was buttered oysters, and the closing dish was mackerel sushi with mandarin orange jelly. There were 4 of us this time, so we ordered a variety of dishes to share. The lotus root mochi with white miso was a perfect taste of Kyoto winter. All the dishes this season were amazing, making it hard to choose. There were fewer fish dishes, which was a bit disappointing, but everything was delicious. Personally, I enjoyed the salted mullet roe mochi, deep-fried fugu, crispy pork, grilled dumplings, and shrimp potato tempura (I love them all, but I seem to prefer fried foods and salted mullet roe). It's a comfortable space where you can enjoy a meal with friends. Looking forward to my next visit.
