Today is a work day. Yesterday, I saw this menu on a friend's social media and being a lover of eggs, I couldn't resist. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that I came to work today mainly for lunch. Located on the 2nd floor of the Shinbashi Station Front Building No.1, "Fukuzuki Shokudo Onowa". Right in front of the passage, you can see the main store "Shomeitei Onowa". This place is also a popular lunch spot among salarymen, and the owner is a former colleague of mine. Today, I will be visiting Fukuzuki Shokudo instead of Shomeitei. While Shomeitei, the izakaya, focuses on cost-effective set meals during lunchtime, Fukuzuki Shokudo offers a concept centered around individual menu items that would please Showa era salarymen, such as spicy curry, sweet Showa-style curry, and nostalgic ramen.
My aim today is neither curry nor ramen. It is the limited-time "Omuhayashi" dish during the "Idol Time". Priced at 1,100 yen, it may be a bit on the high side for Shinbashi salarymen, but being at Onowa, the taste should be impeccable. And what I really wanted to eat was the "Fluffy Omelette made with 3 eggs" that even an egg lover like me would be impressed by. The definition of "Idol Time menu" seems fuzzy, but it seems to imply dishes that take time to prepare, so it's best to avoid the peak time between 12:00 and 13:00. That's why I arrived at 11:45. There were already 3 customers ahead of me, all of whom were already eating, so it seemed possible to place an order. I confirmed with the waitress, "Is the Omuhayashi ready now?" After checking with the kitchen in the back, it was confirmed. The Omuhayashi button on the ticket machine was turned off. I followed the instruction to pay in cash.
The counter is in a classic izakaya style. Behind the counter, there were energetic senior salarymen, much older than me, enjoying curry and ramen separated by an acrylic board. Various condiments were available on the table, showing the owner's hospitality in wanting customers to eat according to their preferences. Although I was told it would take time, the dish arrived in about 5-6 minutes, so I didn't have to wait long. A large plate filled with Hayashi. The side dish was a sesame-dressed cabbage namul. When I changed the direction of the plate, I could see the size of the omelette hidden behind the Hayashi. The omelette made with 3 eggs, which I had been eagerly anticipating, made my mouth water. I dug my spoon into the boundary between the fluffy omelette and the rich Hayashi. The blend of the creamy omelette, the rich Hayashi, and the rice hidden underneath created a small universe. The rich demi-glace sauce in the Hayashi was also exquisite. It was as good as, or even better than, I expected. I was so engrossed in eating that I forgot to add the garnish. I added pickled radish and fukujinzuke. The rice had chopped green peppers in it, adding an accent to the buttered rice. As I was munching away, A, the chef who is also a friend, came to greet me from the kitchen. With my mouth full of Omuhayashi, I couldn't greet him properly, but I managed to mumble something like "It's really delicious." A is a renowned chef who runs the kitchen with great skill.
As a lover of eggs, I found the omelette and the hearty Hayashi to be of excellent quality. The tenderly simmered beef and onions were incredibly soft, with a deep and mild flavor. I was very satisfied. Next time, I plan to try the ramen that I have been curious about and have yet to try. Thank you for the delicious meal.
