At the end of the year and the beginning of the new year, you can see a lot of Galette des Rois. I want to eat it too! Not just a slice, I want a whole one! Sometimes you can find slices for sale, but they don't come with the feve (charm) so you can't become the king. Just when I was thinking about that, I found out that the famous shop Fukiage from Chofu will be popping up at Isetan Shinjuku with an 11cm Galette des Rois and new baked goods. I definitely want to buy this! The Galette des Rois comes in two flavors, regular and pistachio. I also want to try the Daybreak Canneles, so I must go there!
I was able to buy the Galette des Rois in pistachio flavor for 1,981 yen. They were sold out of the regular flavor, so I was lucky! When I opened it at home, the feve was separate. Even in this small Galette des Rois, I'm happy they included the feve! A cute little angel came out. I realized something was missing, and then I remembered! I made a crown out of origami. This is a must-have! I cut it and reheated it. The feuillage and pistachio aroma were amazing. Pistachio is also good, definitely. Since it's 11cm, it didn't have the elegance of a larger Galette des Rois, but I was satisfied.
I also bought other items, including the new Canneles and Madeleines. There was a chocolate version of the Canneles, and it was really good! The rum flavor is stronger in the regular one, but the chocolate version has a more grown-up taste. I think the reason why I find their Canneles to be better than others is because of the honey they use. I don't know for sure, but I like the Daybreak Canneles. (Things I'm not particularly fond of: Canneles, scones, bagels... haha)
I also tried the matcha and sesame Financiers. These were a hit! They went beyond the usual flavors of sesame and matcha, with the toasty flavor of sesame, the fusion with butter, and the bitterness of matcha. I also liked the Earl Grey Citron flavor. The plain Financier is delicious, so it's all about how they add flavor, and they did a great job with these. On the other hand, the raspberry pistachio flavor was disappointing. The raspberry was overpowering. It would have been better with just pistachio. The Lemon Petit Gateau Madeline was also a letdown. I wanted more lemon presence with lemon peel added. It wasn't to my liking.
Chef Hayama is becoming more and more famous and appearing in the media frequently. Chofu is a bit far for me, but the pop-up at the department store makes it easy to purchase.
