Near the Morishita intersection, there is an izakaya. On this day, due to various circumstances, I finished work early and passed by the front of the restaurant for some errands, and I noticed a blackboard that said "Today's 1 yen." The daily menu for 1 yen was being offered, and my favorite "bonito sashimi" was on the menu that day. Without hesitation, I entered the restaurant... or so I would like to say, but it was still 4:40 PM, and I wasn't sure if the restaurant was open. However, my worries were unfounded. Inside the restaurant, I could see customers clinking beer mugs. I entered with relief. First, I ordered the usual draft beer, and then I asked for the "1 yen menu" bonito sashimi. The draft beer, a Premium Malt, was served in about 2 minutes. As I took a sip or two of the beer, the "1 yen menu" bonito sashimi arrived. It may not have been very filling, but it was more than expected for "1 yen." There were about 5 thin slices of bonito sashimi. Underneath, there was a generous amount of onions soaked in water, and on top, there were shiso leaves and white sesame seeds. The condiment was ginger. Personally, I would have preferred garlic instead of ginger, and I didn't need the shiso leaves, but overall, it was not bad. I think it would normally be priced around 398 yen. To be able to eat such "bonito sashimi" for 1 yen, there are no complaints. I switched my alcohol to a chu-hi and added "deep-fried tofu" as a side dish. The chu-hi was mainly plain, but it had a citrus flavor that I liked. As I drank the chu-hi, the deep-fried tofu arrived. The tofu, cut into four half-pieces, had a typical deep-fried appearance with plenty of dashi broth and green onions on top of the thin coating. I took a bite with the accompanying ladle... Hmm, surprisingly subtle in flavor. I could taste the "dashi," but it was so mild that I felt like adding soy sauce. It could be described as having an "elegant taste," but since it was a restaurant with a 1 yen menu, I thought it could be a bit bolder... I ordered another chu-hi, finished the deep-fried tofu, and asked for the bill. It was just a regular izakaya, but the "1 yen menu" was noteworthy. It seems to change daily, so it depends on the content of the day, but it definitely feels like "a good deal for one dish!" As a place to casually drink and snack, it's definitely worth a visit.
