At the northernmost tip of Kyoto, in the town of Miyazu in Kyoto Tango City, the traditional inn and restaurant "Sumidaira Ryokan" has been serving a special delicacy called "Sumidaira Special Rich Egg Bread" since the first year of the Meiji era (1868). When they first opened a shop in Edo, it was a popular item that was hard to get without waiting in line, but now you can purchase it without waiting by making a mobile reservation. I reserved the 10th slot after learning about this, and bought the special egg bread along with my favorite pudding.
- Sumidaira Special Rich Egg Bread: 540 yen including tax
Made mainly from eggs! Unfortunately, there is no seating area, so I followed the cooking instructions and heated it in the microwave at home. Made with carefully selected eggs and other premium ingredients, it was incredibly fluffy and creamy. It's amazing how it stays fluffy and creamy without losing its shape. As the recipe suggests, frying it in butter in a pan would probably make delicious French toast.
- Honsoe Pudding: 540 yen including tax
A miraculous combination of pudding and sweet red bean paste, which are personal favorites of mine. Why didn't these two meet before? Well, maybe I just didn't know about it. It was incredibly delicious! Made with sugar-free red beans from Tokachi, Hokkaido, and fermented red beans from the long-established Kyoto brewery "Eiyo Shuzo," the pudding has a layer of rich egg cream on top. It's not too sweet and can be enjoyed in one go.
The total cost for this pudding and egg bread set, called the "Motosue Assortment," was only 1000 yen including tax, which also covers packaging, paper bag, and ice pack for carrying. Payment is made through card when making a mobile reservation, so you just need to pick it up at the designated time without waiting in line. There is a limited quantity available for each time slot, but reservations can be made from 7 am on weekdays, so you should be able to get your hands on them.
This was my first purchase and tasting of the pudding. Since it was a trial, I shared the top part with a close relative. The red beans at the bottom were all for me. Even so, she praised it highly! Next time, I'll order a set of three of this red bean pudding through mobile order (of course, two of them will be for me).
Located in Azabu-Juban, a neighborhood I used to cover when I worked in the area. There are many long-established shops in the area, but this shop, with a history of 150 years, opened its first Tokyo branch. The products they offer are a mix of tradition and innovation, and I highly recommend them.
Note: The location is on Patio Street, off exit 4 of Azabu-Juban Station on the subway. Turn left at the square and continue on Amaishido Street; the shop will be on the left.
Analogous to my Showa-era self, I initially didn't quite understand how to make a mobile order and ended up calling instead. The staff's response at that time, as well as the feeling when receiving the products, left a very positive impression on me.
