When it comes to Ise, it's all about abalone, and the history of abalone dates back a long time, being highly valued as a tribute to the Imperial Court or as a celebratory food for samurai going to battle or returning. Even today, as the word "noshi-awabi" suggests, it is used as a precious gift for joyous occasions and celebrations, as a genuine congratulatory item. Although there is no celebration, I purchased the following products! Abalone rice 1300 yen It's what you would call a "rice seasoning", where you cook rice with a seasoning liquid containing shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, carrots, and other vegetables, and then sprinkle the separately provided "abalone" on top to complete it! This is a review of a seafood delicacy and processed seafood products section located in the basement of Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi Main Store in Japan. The store's main product is the "Sangū Awabi," which is gently simmered and tender. Currently, the only places where you can buy this product in Tokyo are at the Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi store and the Matsuya Ginza gift counter. About 10 years ago, there used to be a street shop in the Nihonbashi area where I remember seeing the "Sangū Awabi," but I hesitated to buy it due to the relatively high price. Among all shellfish, I love abalone the most, especially the dried abalone used in Chinese cuisine or the simmered abalone, a specialty of Yamanashi. So, I have always regretted not buying it back then. However, on this day, I finally met again after a hundred years. I couldn't leave without buying it this time. What's more, the most popular "Sangū Awabi simmered" with one piece costs 3,501 yen per bag (tax included), which is within my budget. I immediately bought a bag and took it home. When I tried it as a snack with some sake at home, it was delicious. It's so delicious that I can't find the right adjective to describe it, and I just groan in delight. I can't think of anything that matches the deliciousness of abalone cooked in this way. The meat is good, and the liver is also quite tasty. It's also nice to have a generous amount of liver attached to it. I used the remaining simmering broth to make rice. I used an abalone from Korea that costs 500 yen each as an ingredient, and it turned out to be delicious enough. It's not like the old Glico almond caramel, but the meat, liver, and broth all in one grain made the "Sangū Awabi" three times delicious.

I found this rice seasoning mix while walking in Nihonbashi with my wife. It naturally caught my eye at the storefront. The package was for 2 cups of mixed rice, priced at 1,000 yen, but I'm not entirely sure. There was a smaller abalone version, and a larger one with a higher price. I cooked it right away and the mixed rice turned out delicious with a strong clam flavor. Despite the small size of the abalone, there were quite a few in the mix, adding plenty of flavor.
