I sometimes have a sudden craving for onigiri, but I avoid buying them at convenience stores. I've been trying to avoid buying obvious convenience store foods like bento boxes, sandwiches, and side dishes for a few years now. When I see all the toxic additives like glycine, pH adjusters, sodium nitrite, sodium hypochlorite, potassium chloride, sodium phosphate, and trans fatty acids, I just can't bring myself to eat them. That's why I ended up buying from this place in Kinshicho, which has only been open for about three weeks. Before going to Kinshicho, I visited Kameido Tenjin Shrine, so I was also interested in "Onigiri Mamezou" nearby, but this time I wanted to check out this new place. By the way, Mamezou is said to be run by someone who trained at the very popular "Bongo" shop, so I definitely want to revisit it next time I'm in Kameido.
I bought the following from this new place:
- Salmon Brown Rice Onigiri ¥190
- Seaweed and Wasabi Brown Rice Onigiri ¥130
- Cheese and Bonito Flakes Brown Rice Onigiri ¥140
- Ume and Hijiki Brown Rice Onigiri ¥160
- Simmered Egg Onigiri ¥260 (x2)
Total of 6 onigiri for ¥1140... that's cheap, right? The shop receives freshly polished rice directly from the producers, which helps reduce unnecessary transportation costs, and they can handle everything from production to sales with the minimum number of staff, which probably explains the affordable prices. These onigiri are larger in size, much tastier, and definitely healthier than convenience store onigiri. There's no need to think twice about which one to choose. When I visit Kinshicho, I often end up buying dinner to take home, so I would like to use this place again as an option for those times.
