This weekend, I visited Kyoto for the first time in a while. I started by revisiting Spice Gate for a curry breakfast. When I arrived around 8:45, the restaurant was already full! Luckily, someone left soon after and they seated us right away. The food took about 30 minutes to be served. I ordered the seafood curry with a hint of curry leaf, chai cheesecake, and earl grey scone. My partner ordered the mackerel and ginger curry. Unlike last time when the drink and cake were a set, this time they didn't ask and we ended up ordering them separately. The cakes were priced at 650 yen with whipped cream for dine-in, and the scone was 300 or 350 yen with ghee when warmed up for dine-in. The basmati rice cooked with Gyokuro tea from Gion Kitagawa Hanbei was light and fluffy, which I personally liked. The curry was light and soupy, with just the right amount of spice that kicks in after eating. The cheesecake was firm with a nice tea aroma, and the scone was also paired with tea, making both of them delicious. My partner, who loves curry, also really enjoyed the meal. The staff's hospitality was great, so even though we had to wait a bit, we left feeling happy. Thank you for the meal.

Limited to September, the Chai Tantan Keema and the Spicy Drooling Chicken Curry are two spicy Tantan noodles with a flavor close to Chai and a hint of sweetness. The balance is exquisite, leaning towards Chinese flavors while still keeping the curry elements intact. The curry's smoothness also pairs well with rice, showing great balance.

I went to a restaurant that serves curry for breakfast and had a delicious meal. I chose the mackerel curry and the broth curry for breakfast. I also ordered the shrimp curry, but they brought me the broth curry by mistake. However, they kindly brought me the shrimp curry as well, so I ended up trying all three flavors. All of them were very tasty! I also had a spiced highball and a lassi for drinks. The broth curry was refreshing with a strong dashi flavor. The shrimp curry was tangy and spicy. Surprisingly, the mackerel curry was also delicious with the curry flavor complementing the fish well. The rice had various toppings, adding different textures and colors to the dish. I bought some garam masala spice to use in my homemade curry. Eating a flavorful curry on a holiday morning helped me forget about the heat. The restaurant had a stylish and clean interior. I would love to try their desserts next time! The service was also friendly and good.

A refreshing and delicious Kyoto-style dashi breakfast with a healthy feel and a spicy kick. For those who are used to chain restaurant breakfasts, paying over 1,000 yen in the morning might seem a bit much. However, I think it's worth it to enjoy something this elaborate at this time of day. It's also impressive to see the efforts made by companies to offer affordable morning options.

I went to a shop on the second floor after climbing a spiral staircase, where there is also a corner selling herbs and spices. I had been looking for a shop that sells dried herbs the other day, and I found it here. I had the chicken curry from the soba shop. I was also interested in the lamb curry, but it was around 1800 yen, which is quite expensive for a curry shop, so I ordered the cheaper option. Despite being called a soba shop, the curry udon-like name, it had a strong spice flavor with cilantro and achar. It had a strong dashi flavor, fitting the name. Personally, I felt that the chicken was not dry, had a sweetness, and was juicy, which made it feel like a soba shop. I also ordered a craft cola. It had a cocoa-like aroma and a refreshing taste, and it was delicious. I would like to visit this shop again. Note: Rating 3.56 at the time of visit.

I visited for the first time at night on a whim. This time, I ordered the curry recommended by the staff at the soba restaurant. The name is probably just for show. It looks like a hearty, spicy curry, but if you close your eyes, it's a gentle, dashi-flavored Japanese curry. It's not lacking in punch, but the balance that doesn't overshadow the gentleness of the dashi is admirable. This is delicious.

I ordered the Chicken Curry (1200 yen) at the soba restaurant. It tasted like it was made by a soba restaurant with a strong and flavorful broth. The curry was mild with little spiciness, making it a good choice for beginners. The service was also excellent.

A curry restaurant that opens from 7:30 in the early morning. Even though having curry in the morning may seem heavy, this curry is quite different. It's more like a curry rice soup. It looks like a spiced curry but tastes like a very light soup curry. It's hard to describe in words. But even if you eat it in the morning, it doesn't feel heavy on your stomach. Plus, it's healthy with plenty of vegetables. Maybe they developed this light curry for breakfast. It's a good option for breakfast. If you like trying new things, you should definitely give it a try.

I visited the spice curry restaurant that I was curious about. I don't like cilantro, so I had it without cilantro. The aroma of the spices was pleasant, with a deep and flavorful spiciness, and despite being light, it had depth. The rice was fluffy and delicious. I topped it with spicy egg. Curry definitely goes well with lassi. On such a hot day, spice gives me energy!

As usual, visited based on Instagram and tried the lamb chops and lamb keema bindaloo this month. Can't go wrong with these choices. The lamb chops have a unique lamb smell with excellent seasoning of spices. The meat itself is tender and very delicious. On the other hand, the bindaloo has a good balance of spiciness and acidity, which pairs perfectly with the saltiness of the lamb chops. Personally, it's currently my number one favorite on the menu.

I had some errands in the Gion area, so I decided to have lunch in Kawaramachi. I quickly chose the "Mutton Curry for Sucking Bones" after looking at the menu. The moment I took a bite, the aroma of mutton hit me. It was truly delicious. As recommended, I paired it with a craft beer, which complemented the rich flavors well. True to its name, the dish had a unique umami flavor from the bones, particularly the marrow, which was exceptionally tasty. It gave me a new perspective on food. With a wide range of menu options constantly changing, I will make sure to visit when I come to Kyoto.

Slightly hungover and feeling a bit queasy from the heat, but I had already decided to go! I arrived at Spice Gate for breakfast after a determined walk, just before 8 am. It was during the Gion Festival's Yoiyama period, so the restaurant was bustling but not too crowded. I opted for the Kyoto-style Spice Morning Set, which includes the basic basmati rice and a choice of three curries. Although tempted by the bonito dashi and shrimp Tom Yum Kung, I chose the top option, the "Curry Leaf Fragrant Seafood Dashi Curry," as it was my first time. The curry arrived shortly after. The plate of rice was reminiscent of Sri Lankan curry with its vibrant colors (I've only tried it once before...). The basmati rice cooked with green tea, the subtly spiced pickled vegetables, the perfectly soft boiled egg (firm enough to cut with a spoon but still runny), and the perfectly seasoned grilled vegetables all showed the attention to detail in each dish. I started by trying each side dish with the rice, then individually, and then mixing them together. Satisfied with the flavors, I finally tried the curry with a spoon, and the seafood dashi added a refreshing touch to the curry. It was indeed a curry, but with a lightness reminiscent of ochazuke, complementing the Japanese herbaceous vegetables on the rice (there may have been some myoga or herbaceous vegetables in the curry too). The subtle use of spices, taking into account each ingredient and cooking method, was impressive. It was so delicious that I wanted to have seconds. They also sold spices, so I purchased the herb salt that was on the grilled vegetables. It was a luxurious breakfast that brought instant happiness. I highly recommend it.

Morning Curry Curry has a light and refreshing taste with a smooth texture, and the tea-infused rice is delicious, so I ordered an extra serving. The sweet and sour pickled daikon radish goes well with it. The chili mix sprinkled on the boiled egg has just the right amount of spiciness and saltiness, making you want to buy some to take home. Next time, I want to try ordering dessert too.

I went to try the Green Curry at Spice Gate, which is said to be their specialty. First of all, it's quite spicy! This is the characteristic of Green Curry. The spiciness of green chili peppers and the sweetness of coconut are combined in just the right balance. The vegetables are also delicious, and once you start eating, you can't stop. The curry is more watery compared to Thai restaurant's Green Curry. I can see why it's so popular.

Slipped in on the last day of June to try the limited edition curry with Yagen cartilage topping. It's inspired by a Sri Lankan broth, using coconut curry. The first photo turned out dark, but the curry has a beautiful orange color. It retains the coconut flavor while delivering a pleasant umami and spiciness. I found it to pair exceptionally well with the side dishes compared to the May limited edition.

SPICE GATE is a curry restaurant located in Kawaramachi, Kyoto. I visited this restaurant during my self-celebratory birthday trip. They offer a unique concept of "Kyoto-style spice morning set" with a choice of 4 different curries. I tried the cold natto curry, which was quite rare and interesting. They also had curries based on seafood broth. The set meal included chicken keema curry, crispy bell peppers, tomato and onion kachumber, clams and mace tsukudani, Indian-style boiled greens, radish and Kashmiri chili senmaizuke, apple achar, nigella and plum wood ear mushrooms, boiled egg with homemade spice sprinkle, grilled vegetables with homemade herb sprinkle, and basmati rice cooked with Gion Kitagawa Hanbei's sencha tea, along with the cold natto curry. The amount of information in one plate was overwhelming, but it was a great start to my exploration of Kyoto's dashi curry. The restaurant is located about a 5-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station and has a spacious interior with a mix of counter and table seating. Since I visited on a weekday morning when they had just opened, I was able to enjoy my meal without waiting in line. They also sell spices at the storefront, making it a perfect spot for beginners. I look forward to trying more morning curries in Kyoto in the future. The food was delicious, thank you for the meal! (*´◒`*)

About two years ago, I used to go around trying different spice curries every week. Intrigued by the morning curry featured on a food review website, I felt like having spice curry again after a long time. As expected, the restaurant was filled with the aroma of spices. Although I wanted to try the morning curry, they only serve it in the morning, so I ordered the coconut chicken curry instead. The menu was a bit confusing, but the presentation was beautiful. When the spice curry arrived, I took the first bite as it was and found it to be mellow with a hint of spices - delicious! Gradually mixing it, the second bite was even better! Halfway through, I mixed it all and it was still delicious! By the time I finished eating, I had a unique spice-induced sweat dripping down, even though it wasn't too spicy in my mouth. I wonder how many types of spices are used in it? Does the amount of spices affect the taste? I love cooking, but spice curry is a whole new world for me. I vowed to definitely try the morning curry next time and left. Thank you for the delicious spice curry!

Kyoto Karasuma Station is about a 5-minute walk away, up a spiral staircase. You can order the "Kyoto-style Spicy Morning Set Meal" from 7:30 a.m. Kyoto is amazing. I visited on a Saturday morning and the restaurant was about half full, mostly with solo diners. This time, I ordered the classic "Curry Leaf" and "Mackerel and Ginger". The appearance is so vibrant! The various side dishes are a fusion of Japanese and spice, which is very appealing.
Curry Leaf: Light and flavorful, with a strong dashi taste. It feels like having a soup. So delicious. It goes perfectly with the side dishes.
Mackerel and Ginger: This one is rich and authentic. It condenses the umami of the mackerel and feels substantial. Delicious.
If you want something light and refreshing in the morning, go for the Leaf. If you prefer something rich and hearty, go for the Mackerel and Ginger. Both are great, so choose based on your mood and appetite.
Osaka's "Level Curry" and Kansai region's curries are really good at mixing spices. The dashi flavor that I haven't tasted in Tokyo was delicious. Highly recommended.

I came to Kyoto on a business trip. I had heard about morning curry from a friend. I was a bit skeptical about having curry in the morning, but the seafood broth curry, which was like ochazuke, was gentle on the stomach and I ended up eating it mindlessly. It was really delicious! I really wish there was a morning curry culture in Tokyo too! There was no guilt at all about eating curry in the morning... (laughs) Thank you very much!
