On March 13, 2019 (Wednesday), I visited Yoshinoya which has introduced new menu items such as a small portion of beef bowl and a super-sized portion. Yoshinoya has been serving beef bowls for 120 years now. Back when I was a student, I used to work part-time at the Yoshinoya in Ikebukuro West Exit, and at that time they were promoting 80 years of serving beef bowls. The menu back then was simple, consisting of regular beef bowls, large beef bowls, extra toppings like eggs and beef dishes, and plain white rice. However, customers could customize their orders with options like extra sauce or sauce on the side. Fast forward 40 years, and the current Yoshinoya menu is quite extensive, similar to Sukiya and Matsuya. It feels more like a set meal restaurant than just a beef bowl place. The beef bowl sizes range from small to regular, large, extra-large, and now the super-sized portion has been introduced. The super-sized portion has double the amount of beef compared to the large size. When I saw the picture on the menu, the bowl looked huge and the portion seemed substantial, so I decided to challenge myself to try it after preparing myself. This time, I ordered the "extra-large beef bowl without broth" with an additional side of kimchi. It cost ¥580 in total. The default portion of beef in the large size was 120g, so the super-sized portion has 240g of beef. The default amount of sauce in the beef bowl seems to have gradually increased to what is now considered "extra sauce." I believe this trend started around 2001 when Tomomi Kahara mentioned on TV that she liked her beef bowl with extra sauce. The default amount of sauce back then was similar to what is now considered "without broth." I used the special slotted spoon to drain the broth thoroughly. Once the beef bowl arrived, I generously sprinkled Yoshinoya's original seven-spice blend, which has a mild spiciness, and added the appropriate amount of pickled ginger. Then, using chopsticks, I ate the beef bowl with gusto. It's important not to use a spoon to eat it. The kimchi at Yoshinoya has a good balance of spiciness and sweetness, which I enjoy. Even with the beef portion of the "extra-large" and the rice portion of a regular size, I felt quite satisfied after finishing the meal. Next time, I plan to challenge myself with the super-sized portion. The beef is doubled, and the rice is one and a half times the regular portion. Can I handle it? The beef portion in the large size is 120g, so double that is 240g, and the regular rice portion is 250g, so the super-sized portion would be 375g. I will attempt it next time!
