If you walk along the railroad tracks from Ueno Station to Ameyoko, you will find two Monja-yaki shops, and we went to the one further back called Moheji. There were four of us, all men, who visited the restaurant. A friend from out of town wanted to try something typical of Tokyo while exploring Ueno, so we decided to have Monja-yaki. It was a Sunday lunchtime, so there was a short wait with about three groups ahead of us, but we were seated on the second floor fairly quickly. The seats were a bit cramped, but there was space under the chairs to store bags and belongings, so it wasn't too inconvenient to sit. We ordered the classic Mentaiko Mochi Monja and Beef Tendon Ball. I forgot to take a photo of the Monja, unfortunately. As soon as we placed our order, we were served with a squid tentacle appetizer. It had a great taste when stir-fried with butter soy sauce, and it went well with alcohol. It felt a bit pricey, but I preferred it over being served with dishes like simmered food or raw vegetables that I didn't really want. The Monja-yaki had a reliable taste, being from Moheji, and the Beef Tendon Ball, which I was worried might not cook properly, was cooked by the staff, which was a relief. They even added sauce, mayonnaise, seaweed, and bonito flakes at the end, which was very helpful for someone like me who is not very skilled. However, due to the nature of mixing and spreading the sauce and mayonnaise, the sauce brought by the staff would inevitably have a little mix of the previous sauce and mayonnaise, so it might be a bit difficult for those who are very particular about cleanliness. The taste of the Beef Tendon Ball was very appetizing with alcohol, and I ended up finishing my second drink here. For the finale, we ordered the Seafood Garlic Rice, which was cooked on a hot plate with seafood and bean sprouts, and seasoned with a little black pepper and soy sauce on the table. The delicious smell of garlic filled the restaurant as it was being cooked, and I noticed that two more tables also ordered the Garlic Rice (laughs). Well, as a Monja-yaki restaurant in the downtown area of Ueno, the restaurant may have some drawbacks such as the not-so-clean interior, a slightly slower service during busy times leading to a short wait, and being a bit pricey for a restaurant in the Ameyoko area of Ueno.
