ツバサバサ
On a Sunday afternoon, while wandering around Nishi-Shinjuku, I stumbled upon this newly opened restaurant with a sign that read "Monja," which instantly made me crave monjayaki. Before I knew it, I was already lining up outside the restaurant (laughs). Upon entering, I noticed the spacious layout with unique seats neatly arranged. Most of the seats seemed to be for 2 or 4 people. The tables were slightly small with built-in iron plates and additional tabletops extending upwards from the sides, where dishes and utensils could be placed. It was quirky yet distinctive, and I found it interesting (refer to photos). The round cylindrical chairs had lids on the top surface, which could be opened to store belongings, making them convenient.
Now, the dishes I ordered this time were:
- Imabari Yakitori Thigh ¥549
- Potato Salad with Onsen Tamago (hot spring egg) ¥549
- Pork Kimchi Cheese Monja ¥1,375
- Mentaiko Mochi Monja ¥1,485
- Cheese Topping ¥330
- Asahi Super Dry ¥329
- Dry Zero ¥329
- Jasmine Tea around ¥300
Total around ¥5,246 (including tax)

One dish that left a strong impression was the Imabari Yakitori Thigh. With a wide variety of menu options, I was unsure of what to choose, but I decided to start with the classic "thigh" dish. This was a type of dish where raw meat was brought to you, and you grilled it on the iron plate. The staff asked, "Would you like it grilled?" so I agreed. They used an iron grilling tool shaped like an iron to press down on the meat, flipped it over when ready, and grilled the other side. Once cooked, they topped it with a special salt sauce. The sizzling sound and aroma of the grilled thigh meat and salt sauce on the iron plate were incredibly appetizing! It was delicious with the perfect grilling and seasoning, and it went really well with beer. I finished it in no time (laughs).
Another dish, the Mentaiko Mochi Monja, had an extensive menu since it was a monjayaki restaurant. There were various toppings to choose from, making it a tough decision (laughs). When in doubt, I went for the classic option - Mentaiko Mochi Monja with cheese topping! When it arrived, I was surprised by the portion size. The plate was piled high with cabbage in the center, topped with large pieces of mentaiko and block-shaped mochi. The broth was served in a separate container, making it easy to prepare. Additionally, the table's side panel had instructions with photos on how to cook it, which was great! After spreading it out on the iron plate and grilling it, the final touch of sprinkling cheese with a cheese-shaving tool made it complete! It smelled really good! And it was quite a generous portion! Grilling it slightly crispy made it incredibly delicious! Despite the volume, I found myself finishing it in no time, which was surprising (laughs).
In conclusion, the unique table seats, cooking on the iron plate in front of you, a wide variety of monjayaki options, generous and delicious dishes, affordable drinks, and the nostalgic 90s music (laughs) with many young female staff made it very appealing and cost-effective! It's easy for people of our age group to use. The delicious and satisfying meal was truly a great deal. I will definitely visit again!
