Kyowan
I visited on a regular night. The place is located on the first floor of a building on the left side after turning right at the first intersection from exit 10 of Tameike-Sanno Station towards Ark Hills. It's on a slightly calm street. Today I attended a concert at Suntory Hall by the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by J. Noseda, with violin by Sayaka Shoji. The pieces performed were Bach (arr. Respighi) / Three Chorales Respighi / Gregorian Chant Concerto Rachmaninoff / Symphony No. 1 All were first-time listens for me. Rachmaninoff's piece was quite earthy (rough?). However, themes of the Day of Wrath were subtly present throughout, and hints of symphonic dance were also present, showcasing Rachmaninoff's style. Was it interesting? That's debatable, but the orchestra's performance was fantastic. Respighi, on the other hand, had its own style but was a bit boring. Now, before the concert, I decided to grab a bite to eat. I wondered if this was a sister store of Kaneko Hanzo, and entered with that thought in mind. The store was empty when I arrived (2 groups came in later), and I took a seat at the counter. The staff (the owner?) placed two jars on the counter. I ordered the Tempura Bowl with Miso Soup Set for 1,700 yen after looking at the menu on the counter. The jars contained pickles - radish pickles in the red jar and ginger and burdock pickles in the black jar. I tried both, and while I preferred the latter, the mild taste of the former was also appealing. It took about 8 minutes for the food to be served, handed to me directly from the kitchen. First, I tried the miso soup. The finely chopped green onions were beautiful, and the tofu miso soup had a rich flavor. It was delicious. Now, onto the tempura bowl. The ingredients included conger eel, 2 shrimp, seaweed, green pepper, sweet potato, and egg. Unlike other tempura bowls, this one had egg in all pieces. Personally, I'm not sure about egg tempura. I believe tempura is about savoring the texture of the ingredients, but is egg suitable for tempura? I'm not a fan of the runny yolk dripping onto the rice. Why were the sweet potatoes sliced so thin? The shrimp provided a nice crunch and firmness, while the conger eel could have had more texture. Overall, the slightly sweet and light tempura sauce didn't quite complement the batter well (didn't quite match). The miso soup and pickles, on the other hand, were enjoyable. I was impressed by the tempura bowl at Kaneko Hanzo in Lazona Kawasaki, but this one was just okay. Still, I'm grateful that you can have a tempura bowl in the heart of Tokyo for around a thousand yen. With its small eatery vibe, it seems like a place where you can enjoy tempura with some drinks. Thank you for the meal.
