This is a cozy monjayaki restaurant with a nostalgic atmosphere of a downtown neighborhood. It is popular among locals of all ages, from elementary school students to the elderly. The mother who manages the restaurant is very kind and welcoming, creating a warm and comforting atmosphere. The prices are reasonable, making it easy to order without worrying too much about the cost. The taste is reminiscent of the unique salty flavor of downtown neighborhoods. I hesitate to share this hidden gem, but I highly recommend it.

I went to Monja-yaki and Okonomiyaki Ikkyusan, located in a back alley a 5-minute walk from Kikukawa Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line. Inside, there are table seats and tatami mats. The restaurant was filled with families enjoying Monja for dinner, a group of local young women in jerseys engaged in lively girl talk, and kids staring at the TV on the wall while eating with their mothers - a typical scene in the downtown area. I ordered mentaiko Monja (with Baby Star and extra cheese) and hanpen butteryaki with sake (served at room temperature). I cooked the hanpen carefully with butter to avoid burning, enjoying it with sake ( ・∀・). For the Monja, I mixed Baby Star and cheese into a mound, cooked it until just right, and enjoyed it while sipping on sake. I ended up getting quite tipsy. It was a delicious meal. The payment is cash only. It's 7 pm, but feeling sleepy, I left early.

A quietly run shop by a couple. The menu, including desserts, is extensive. The monjayaki is very delicious and satisfying, with surprisingly high cost performance.

I was introduced to a sushi restaurant by the owner in my neighborhood. A friend from Kansai who had never tried okonomiyaki before, so I decided to take them there. The restaurant has a traditional vibe of a monjayaki place in the downtown area. The scallops are thick and satisfying to eat. I accidentally ordered the vegetable okonomiyaki without realizing it, but it was filled with plenty of vegetables. When I asked for cold sake, I got a cup of sake (laughs). The classic choice of monjayaki was mentaiko mochi cheese with lots of cabbage, delicious! We arrived late so we couldn't relax much, but the mother's personality is lovely and the taste is satisfying. The portions are generous, so it's best to go with three or more people. I used to stop by often on my way to school when I was a student. I'm looking forward to trying the okonomiyaki leisurely next time. Whether it's Ikkyu or Kiyokawa or the monjayaki and okonomiyaki in Morishita, they are cheap and delicious. No need to go all the way to Tsukishima.

Enjoy the texture of the cabbage. Better than Monja in Tsukishima. Soba Monja is also good.
